I mean, the bottom line is that the results are a POSITIVE. There are so many NEGATIVE things going on in this world, this nation... that someone raises an issue of awareness against a disease... well, i guess I'm of a different mindset. I happen to like breasts... they are soft and round and a nice place to rest my head. That's why I'm all for saving them.
...
And in case you don't recall... it wasn't all that long ago when Breast Cancer was basically a death sentence. But, because of the awareness campaign and education... early detection of the disease has saved many lives... and many breasts. How someone has an issue with cancer survival... beyond my comprehension.
I wouldn't say I have a problem with it as I would say that I wondered if there could be a more EFFECTIVE way of helping to stop breast cancer than everybody putting money, time and effort into producing and displaying pink things.
It's kind of like my thoughts on those silent auctions to raise money for charity. They go like this:
Someone donates $50 worth of stuff.
Someone else buys said stuff for $35.
$35 goes to charity.
Why didn't the original $50 go to charity?
Because it's not just about the $ that goes to charity, it's about creating awareness and putting a topic into regular conversation. Look back 50 years...do you think your dad/grandfather, etc would feel comfortable talking out loud about breast (gasp!) cancer?
The $ helps. The awareness and setting up a safe environment for everyone to really talk about a sensative issue is worth way more. Just my opinion. Also, football players wearing pink in support...reminds people that while it effects mainly women directly, but it ends up effecting us all through the ones we love.
Also, while it is specifically for breast cancer, it opens the talk for all cancer.hippiemom = goodness0 -

Thanx, Cincy. That is exactly it, Awareness.
Football games are not only seen by the several thousand fans at the stadium... there are several hundreds of thousands watching the game on television. Increase the number of games televised, and the numbers go into the millions.
Sure, most will not donate... but, they will be aware of the disease... one that may affect their wife or girlfriend, mother or daughter, friend, co-worker, aunt, neice, cousin, etc...
And there will be those people who will do something... raise funding for a 10K in their city... or a 3-Day Walk in New York or Charlotte.
...
I have found, when I talk to people... I learn. I never knew that my co-workers have gone through this... lost their mothers or wives to it, until I talked to them. I know many survivors... including Pearl Jam fans... as well as those who didn't make it.
I guess... all we can do is what we can do.Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!
