Pro Football Players Wearing Pink

First of all, I think it's wonderful to show support for breast cancer awareness.

Here's my problem with all of this, though. I'm watching the Monday night football game and seeing all of those pink shoes, sweat bands, visors, towels, cheerleader outfits, goal post pads etc., etc., etc., and I'm thinking that it must have all cost a fortune.

Wouldn't it have done more for breast cancer to donate all of the money and time that it took to produce all of those things directly to breast cancer research?

i hear what you are saying, but it really is all about trying to making people more aware and hitting home the importance of being more vigilant. announcing at the beginning of the game, that ex amount of dollars are being donated to breast cancer research, does not have the same effect as the extended visual image of pink = awareness/breast cancer/dangers/support/research.

If it's anything like what baseball does with the pink bats, then a bunch of that stuff will be auctioned off and the money will be donated anyways.

Yeah, the NFL is doing this too.

    from: http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d ... nfirm=true
Game-worn pink merchandise and K-balls will be autographed post-game and auctioned off at http://www.NFLAuction.NFL.com, with proceeds benefitting the American Cancer Society and team charities. Special pink merchandise will be available at NFLShop.com and in stadium retail stores, with a portion of proceeds going to breast cancer charities.

So the expense of producing this stuff as a double result... it raises awareness, and the auctioned off stuff will raise more than the items cost to make.

my problem with all of this is that none of these companies really want to find a cure it's just a marketing ploy. if they found a cure then what would happen to all the pink stuff?

You think that if a cancer cure was found, they'd have a shortage of other diseases and conditions that the could sell crap for? I'm sure they'd move on to AIDS, autism, or any of the other countless illnesses/causes out there.

Now drug companies on the other hand, they stand to lose billions if cancer is cured.

no, but for some companies things like this is just a marketing move. i forget the yogurt that has those pink tops they say they will donate money towards breast cancer if you mail them in....read the fine print, their maximum donation is pretty small

Not to be insensitive, but why isn't there a colon cancer awareness week? What color would they wear for that - camoflauge?

i've never seen the NFL do something like that. i thought it was sweet! i too assumed the pink stuff would be auctioned off to raise money for breast cancer.
has the NFL done anything like that before? ...wearing things for the game? how'd they pitch the idea i wonder.

I was mentioning something similar last night. How much more awareness does breast cancer need? Those pink ribbons are everywhere and it seems like there's an event for it everywhere you turn around. It's probably the most publicized disease we have.

When do we start prostate cancer awareness campaigns? Maybe women athletes could wear apparel that promotes that?

The NFL did this before in the early 2000's when Ray Lewis, Jamal Lewis, and Rae Carruth were all in legal trouble in order to turn the league's image around. Samantha King wrote a good book on the topic of Breast Cancer Awareness in general and focuses on the NFL in at least one chapter.

totally agree...not to downplay breast cancer but it gets way to much attention compared to all other types of cancer

probably because women like their breasts (isn't 90% of female clothing devoted to trying to draw attention to them?) and men are on board to support anything that allows them to talk openly about breasts. but prostate cancer... nobody wants to think about how you discover that one ;)

men can get breast cancer, too.
it's just not as common as women are 100x more likely to develop it than men are.
the search for a cure is about finding a cure for all forms of breast cancer.

and the ACS works towards funding awareness and research for all types of cancer, not just breast cancer.

The only problem I see in all of this... is that someone has a problem with all of this.
I mean, the bottom line is that the results are a POSITIVE. There are so many NEGATIVE things going on in this world, this nation... that someone raises an issue of awareness against a disease... well, i guess I'm of a different mindset. I happen to like breasts... they are soft and round and a nice place to rest my head. That's why I'm all for saving them.
    ...
And in case you don't recall... it wasn't all that long ago when Breast Cancer was basically a death sentence. But, because of the awareness campaign and education... early detection of the disease has saved many lives... and many breasts. How someone has an issue with cancer survival... beyond my comprehension.

Thing is... just because you may know... doesn't mean everyone else does. You can never assume that everyone already knows what you know... or that you already know everything.

I wouldn't say I have a problem with it as I would say that I wondered if there could be a more EFFECTIVE way of helping to stop breast cancer than everybody putting money, time and effort into producing and displaying pink things.

It's kind of like my thoughts on those silent auctions to raise money for charity. They go like this:

Someone donates $50 worth of stuff.
Someone else buys said stuff for $35.
    $35 goes to charity.
Why didn't the original $50 go to charity?

Because it's not just about the $ that goes to charity, it's about creating awareness and putting a topic into regular conversation. Look back 50 years...do you think your dad/grandfather, etc would feel comfortable talking out loud about breast (gasp!) cancer?

The $ helps. The awareness and setting up a safe environment for everyone to really talk about a sensative issue is worth way more. Just my opinion. Also, football players wearing pink in support...reminds people that while it effects mainly women directly, but it ends up effecting us all through the ones we love.

Also, while it is specifically for breast cancer, it opens the talk for all cancer.

Thanx, Cincy. That is exactly it, Awareness.
Football games are not only seen by the several thousand fans at the stadium... there are several hundreds of thousands watching the game on television. Increase the number of games televised, and the numbers go into the millions.
Sure, most will not donate... but, they will be aware of the disease... one that may affect their wife or girlfriend, mother or daughter, friend, co-worker, aunt, neice, cousin, etc...
And there will be those people who will do something... raise funding for a 10K in their city... or a 3-Day Walk in New York or Charlotte.
    ...
I have found, when I talk to people... I learn. I never knew that my co-workers have gone through this... lost their mothers or wives to it, until I talked to them. I know many survivors... including Pearl Jam fans... as well as those who didn't make it.
I guess... all we can do is what we can do.
