    Oh, forgot to ask..are there more demos/bsides from Backspacer out there? I'm greedy, you see.

    Everyone has the demo because it was given away free with the "find the cover images" promotion.

    Because we are all too used to the much better demo version.

    just listened to the demo (thanks Ledbetterman). Quite nice. I can see how that version might have gotten your hopes real high. We'll see which one I end up liking better. A great song, no matter how its arranged in my opinion. This is the PJ song I've been waiting for since after No Code came out
  • I am not among the connected... I never heard the song before Backspacer and I love it. I love the lyrics. I cried the first time I heard it.

    I LOVE the album version. I like the fact that sounds almost like a jam session.

    agreed
    {if (work != 0) {
    work = work + 1;
    sleep = sleep - work * 10;}
    else if (work >= 0) {
    reality.equals(false);
    work = work +1;
    }system("pause");
    return 0;}
  • I love this song...one of my favorite in a while. I'm surprised to see this thread.
  • Because the title should have been Speed of Snails! The song just puts me to sleep. Can you imagine what this song will do to the pace of a concert when it is played live. I mean, talk about slamming on the brakes! Plus, I hate country, and it reminds me of a country song. Way to much twang for me. Easily my least favorite Pearl Jam song in a while.

    Sounds like a Neil Diamond song to me... Goes on my very short list of pj songs I skip...
    Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...
  • I love both versions.

    LOVE SPEED OF SOUND! love the album version, it has many layers. i also love the demo but i'm glad that the whole band plays it on the album version. people on this forum like to complain too much. a lot of pearl jam fans are spoiled brats. if they didn't even release the demo, there wouldn't be this controversy. however, i'm glad that they did because now we have both versions to enjoy.
    I died. I died and you just stood there. I died and you watched. I died and you walked by and said no. I'm dead.
  • being sammiched in between supersonic and force of nature on the cd is a tuff act

    force of nature is soooo right on. omg
  • I was a little shocked to see this post, mostly because I think that SOS is a beautiful song. I haven't heard the demo though, so I guess I don't have the same frame of reference as a lot of the people who dislike the song. I can't imagine that hearing the demo first would have made a difference though (for me, anyway).

    I havent been on the board in quite a while. I am really surprised at the general reception to some of the songs on Backspacer..Seems like most everyone dislikes Speed of Sound. I thought this one would be at the top of most peoples lists. Just curious...what is that you dislike about it?

    I like it! Took me a bit to get over the way they "popped it up", but I really like it now.

  • Overall, I do like the studio version of "Speed Of Sound", however, what bothers me about it is that the guitar in the mix is pretty much non-existent...After the beginning of each verse it disappears completely, and all that you can hear is the drums, strings and the keys...If the guitar was much more upfront in the mix the song could have had much bigger balls...

    You're awfully casual with your use of the all inclusive "Everyone."

    I don't dislike it!!
