Song really has grown on me.
I read some people don't like abrupt ending.
I LOVE IT!!!
It is kind of like the end of the movie "No Country For Old Men"....
*****Spoiler Alert for those who haven't seen****
The movie ends right in the middle of Tommy Lee Jone's dialogue...just cuts out and goes to black. A lot of symbolism and meaning behind a sudden end like that. Think it is haunting and cool considering the subject matter of the song.0 -
The song is so awesome. However, the album version doesn't compare to when Eddie played it live at the Ryman this past summer.0

the ending is perfect. i like Just Breathe a little more though. feels more complete.0

It's a lot like a Randy Newman song in Toy Story II -- when the girl doll Josie sings about her child abandoning her. "When She Loved Me", it was sung by Sarah Ann McLachlan -- and wow, it was nominated for the oscar but lost to phil collins tarzan something.... sigh.
Amazing song for me. Not a song I especially wanted, but a song I needed. That I was there when Ed first performed it (6/12) was one of those cosmic karmic events in life....
There's something to be said for recognizing that it's simply the human condition to go through incredible, "searing" emotional pain -- knowing that others are going through it, others are writing about it perhaps having weathered it, survived.... That the inverse of that pain is in fact something quite beautiful.
Like this song. Like Black.

That was my biggest concern in how would the song play live without the string, horn and violin arrangements. It helps make the song what it is and that is remarkable. Albeit, Eddie's voice is the dominant force but you cannot argue the influence of the instruments.
To the lady whose husband left her...that is very sad to hear. I am a true believer in that everything in life happens for a reason and I hope that reason becomes obvious to you sooner than later.0 -

And lastly listen to this song w/ headphones on at a good volume and it will shake you to the bone. THE END= A PJ MASTERPIECE!
I second this emotion... for anyone who hasn't fallen for this song yet... try listening with a good pair of headphones... or just any headphones... at night in bed is a great time... allows you to focus.0 -
He did this solo at SBE in August, I thought to myself then, wow!
When I heard the album verson it totally floored me.
I've read a lot of threads since the album was released, we all have opinions I know, but one was regarding his voice not sounding polished, and rubbish on headphones with regard to this song in particular.
In my humble opinion his vocals on The End are up there with the best he's ever done. He absolutely nails it for me, it's so raw, it very nearly cracks as he wrings out the emotion to the nth degree.
Stunning vocal.0 -
I agree, it is the best song on the album and one of the all-time PJ classics. Such emotion, passion and lyrical mastery. Along with a great melody line. Brilliant.0

The line: "leave you with the kids alone" gets me every time.0

I'm listening to it right now. It has the ITW feel. I love it. I loved it the first time I heard it. The way the lyrics are put to the music, brilliant!TDR0

I really the french horns right after Ed sings..
"It's my fault now I've been caught, a sickness in my bones"
Yeah, it took a few listens of the record for this song to really stand out to me too. But damn, what a song. Absolutely beautiful, lyrically and musically. I never thought I would like hearing a string section in a PJ song, but wow, Brenden knew what he was doing and it sounds terrific.0 -
Gmoney wrote:So sorry to hear... what a bitter sweet day. I am and have been torn from day one as to whether or not this song is actually about death. At first I was convinced that it wasn't, and that it simply was written by someone who recognized the end of a relationship and was suffering greatly from it. The only thing that has slightly changed my mind, making me lean toward it being about death is the "gasp" at the end of the song. As if it's the last breath...
When Ed introduced the song at the Portland show he said "I'll be playing it alone, which is fitting because its about death." ...or something to that effect.Post edited by hollyster70 onBe Kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle0 -

The very first time I listening to BS I had it blasting on my old school head phones- the clarity with no other sound to annoy you is awesome!
The first time I heard The End I cried, not just a few tears but a full on body heaving cry. I am fortunate to not have lost anyone that close to me yet - but thats it YET, eventually I will, whether its tomorrow or in 50 years - the full on emotion of the lyrics and music just bought it flooding out!all you need is love, love is all you need0 -
I love this song and I gave my mom the new album and this is her favorite song. It makes me wanna cry its so sad sounds like a dying guy saying bye to his family.Shows:

When I first heard it I fell in love with it. I was listening to the album for the first time on headphones in the dark and I just could feel the hurt and pain in Ed's voice. When the music drops off at the end with just Ed's voice, it just floors me every time. I absolutely love it. It is BARELY my second favorite on the album behind Just Breathe. Lyrically it is amazing. His vocals are just perfect on this song more so than on any others in my opinion.
Slide on next to me....I'm just a human being.... I will take the blame.... But just the same.... this is not me... you see... believe... I am better than this....... Whew, just awesome vocally.
Gosh can't even put into words how much I love the ending of this song:
My dear......
the end comes near......
I'm here....
But not much longer.......................Formerly Brew Crew Tix

I am amazed by how Eddie managed to capture the emotional and physical pain that a fairly young patient (in this case I believe palliative in his early 40 or 50s with children and afflicted by bone metastases) will experience and express to his wife (sexes may be reverse). More than friends ... want to grow old (with you) ... sickness in my bones.
I, as a physician, have seen this reality a few times. The drainage of energy from metastatic cancer is complete ... bottom of a well. I have also seen up close from one on my 44 year old friend who passed away from metastatic lung cancer (he never smoked a cigarette in is life), this, 3 years ago. My father in law also went through the same emotional an physical despair described by Eddie 3 weeks ago.
I believe the ones that "get" this song have lost a close one. The ones that have yet to get it will one day as death of a close one inevitably will happen to them (hopefully, i.e., they will be close to another person and will not die prematurely themselves). This intense and painful emotion that come with death of a close one is important to help one grow and realize that there is a big picture, that each day should not be wasted, and there has to be life after death.
The songs ends perfectly as palliative cancer patients die in this fashion. I have seen it many times. They take one breath, and the next one does not come.I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.
