Pearl Jam are far far better live then the Mars Volta. I love tmv, but I was bored shitless when I saw them. They need to cut about an hour from their sets.

I love PJ and all but do we really have to flat out say they are the best on album and live??!! That's a little ridiculous. They fucking rock, no doubt......but lets keep our ears open.
we dont HAVE to say they are the best live, we just KNOW it. I can honestly and openly say that BECUZ ive seen ALOT of bands live. Everyone is different BUT, i have heard from people that are NOT fans of PEARL JAM say that they are without a doubt thee best live band. I will not mention the other best live act ive heard people say becuz some of you chumps talk too much mess!!!

And another thing, pertaining to who was talking about the overall "blanket statement"...am I the only one who feels like I'm at church in these forums sometimes? You know how if you go to some churches and they're all like "our belief is the only and best belief, and anyone who believes anything else is wrong."

Same with some PJ fans. It's like OF COURSE they're the best LIVE band and OF COURSE they're the best STUDIO band and anyone who thinks otherwise is CRAZY. Well...
thats true with SOME fans. Not all. but do keep in mind you ARE at a PEARL JAM site!!!! :D besides, youre just CRAZY!!!! :D

PJ and Mars Volta are two completely different bands, as someone said before. In my opinion, TMV is very hit or miss with their songs. I have never heard an album of theirs where I actually like every song. But don't get me wrong, I think theyre a great band and do like a bunch of their songs. I think that Eddie's voice is alot more accurate in relation to PJ albums. I've seen a few videos of TMV and the frontman's voice doesn't sound great at all, but then again his voice is amazing on their records, and is probably hard to replicate when they rock out as much as they do on stage.

    Just my opinion

I've seen TMV. They are intense, in every sense of the word for sure--long sets, dense, progressive music, wailing vocals, off meter drumming. PJ to my ears is a much different band. Mike and Stone play relatively straightforward rock whereas Omar Rodriguez seems bent on creating a new genre.
Cant compare them, but TMV in a big stadium as a headliner for 60 thousand people would be quite an experience.
  • Really just depends what outside influences I'm on. I'm sure there are many on this board who know where I'm coming from.

I've seen TMV 3 times now, once very recently, and I have to say they are a great live band, for very different reasons to PJ. With TMV you get an epic performance with very long jams as part of each song, which I can understand doesn't suit a lot of people. If you go to a TMV gig and expect to hear the songs note for note as per the albums you will be sorely dispapointed.

There is little band/audience ineraction (although having said that they got around 30+ people on stage for the 1st or 2nd song at the last gig I went to) and during their quieter moments you often hear quite a loud 'hub' of conversation as the audience gets bored with the longevity of the song/s and people moving to and from the bar or toilets. Having said that, I do love going to see them and wish more people in the crowd would be a little more respectful during their jam sessions.

Bearing all that in mind, the extra long sets, the crowd interacation, the anticipation and the feeling of utter elation after a PJ gig makes them the better live band, in my humble opinion. The way I decided?

By imagining both bands announced a gig on the same day in my home town - who would I go and see? No doubt about it PJ.

Now for that gig in Newcastle....

If you want another fantastic live band - check out Clutch! First time I saw them last year I went straight home and ordered more tickets for another show - Neil puts on one hell of a performance!

TMV have really tightened up their live act in the last couple years. Cedric even has shows where he sounds AMAZING... but that doesn't happen often.. I just got fucked over by them again with a second canceled show in Columbus so I kinda gotta grudge at the moment, but putting that aside, they can blow your mind live. More explosive energy on stage than present-day PJ. Pearl Jam has a better connection with the audience and music that we can generally relate to more; TMV is better for watching a display of frantic, trippy, explosive, technical art. They're different animals, but they're both right up there.

I just came from The Mars Volta show and it was fucking amazing!! I've been a loyal Pearl Jam fan all of my life. I've seen them front row even a few times because I've been a fan club member since I was 12. Anyhow, I was deep in the crowd for TMV, but it was so intense it didn't matter. I kinda think that TMV is a better live band but feel like even suggesting an idea is heresy. Any of you seen TMV live? What do you think?

Mars volta is just 'strange', and I did not get their performance.
  • There really shouldn't be much of a question.

I've seen TMV live on two occassions, and I actually think it's fairly disrespectful to even make the comparison. Pearl Jam have been acknowledged as the best live band in the world since before The Mars Volta even formed, and they have more than earned every last accolade that they've received.

Don't get me wrong, The Mars Volta put on a great show, are very talented and skillled performers, and do a great job playing it up for the crowd. I love "discovering" new music, and The Mars Volta was a very cool discovery a few years back. That being said, they have a LONG way to go before they are anywhere close to Pearl Jam's level.
  • TMV are amazing live. i saw them before they went into the studio to record deloused and it was one of the most surreal shows i've ever attended (with about 50 people in chico, california). saw them again for FTM and once again it was amazing. they came out and ripped the place apart. granted some of the jams get drawn out but they are such incredible musicians they managed to hold my attention regardless. i've recently got back into them (took me a while to hear bedlam..but DAMN!)

pearl jam are amazing live....the best ever though? not in my opinion. pearl jam is awesome live and they are my favorite band, but i've been to better shows.

trail of dead (touring for source tags and code) - the casbah, san diego.

the bronx (before their second album came out) - the doll house (an old house converted into a bar. holds around 100(?). AWESOME place to see the bronx), los angeles.

weezer (pre-green album. they played almost all of the blue album and pinkerton) - canes, san diego.

ehhh..i'd have to think of the others..but san diego 06 was pretty fucking outstanding.

Can't comapre a GA Floor show to the boring ass seat arrangement PJ does. The setting matters, I saw TMV as an opening act with a seat, it was good, not great. Put them as a headliner on a GA floor it would probably be pretty intense.

PJ is the only band I can enjoy with a seated arrangement.
  • Considering Mars Volta sucks ass, the answer would have to be...yes. :D
