Could someone please tell me what this is? EV Tour related

A Boss loop sampler - Something Ed apparently has used on his tour. What exactly does it do?
"First of all, there’s the palpable camaraderie and good feeling you get from the entire band as they smile and nod at each other, and huddle together in various formations throughout the show --- They look like they really like each other. They look stoked!"

    I think it's used to record a sample that you can then play in loop.
    Ed uses that for Arc. he sings and records the first voice with it,, then play the recorded voice and sings the second voice on it, etc.
    I've never tried that thing though
