is it possible the band cant offer us "older" shows without negotiating a big time deal with Sony? I wonder if they jumped thru hurdles to get us the New york New Year's eve show a few years ago etc? Maybe this is the reason all the shows are so recent? After they left Sony

I wouldn't think that would matter. If sony owns the rights to the older songs then they own the rights to the songs no matter what years they were played. I could be wrong.
You are. Sony owns the rights to the recordings.

Not necessarily - its on the Indy 2000 show, one of the Aussie shows from 2006... you should be able to find them online w/o too much trouble.

How do you know that's the case? And if so, wouldn't they own the 2005 recordings as well?
  • I don't believe Sony owns rights to live recordings of the songs. Master tapes...possibly. I doubt live recordings though.

The whole point of this is to bring in NEW fans, and what the hell would someone who is just getting into the band gain from having a concert recording of a show from 15 years ago??

Maybe so. But it's a little misleading then to use terms like "vault shows" and "spanning the bands career"

True, but did we ever get those terms stated in an official press release from the band, or Target??

I think it has all just been speculation on the part of the fans/music journalist. I could be wrong, hell I probably am wrong, I just don't ever remember reading those exact words in anything official.

Yeah I'm too lazy to find it right now, but that was the exact verbage.

I should have know better than to get my hopes up. I mean seriously, as many good things that come from the band and the 10C, they have seriously dropped the ball on this. Now before someone gives me an "entitlement" speech, let's not forget that they were the ones who first mentioned this whole vault thing YEARS ago (remember the Vegas download? Rats?) and we have never been given any sort of update on this. Even if it is to say that it will be twenty fucking years, they should announce something. And then to use the notorious "vault" term with these shows is just an embarrassment and slap in the face if you ask me.
  • I don't believe Sony owns rights to live recordings of the songs. Master tapes...possibly. I doubt live recordings though.

could that maybe be why we ended up with an audience recording from the 12/31/92 show instead of a soundboard?

long ago, I quit looking at 10C as a "fan club." To me, they're just the public relations arm of Curtis Mgmt. Outside of this little domain right here, I imagine that they actually have very little influence in the world of PJ.

I'm pretty sure. It might have been cleaned up a tad, but the waveforms were almost identical to the AUD recording that'd been floating around trading circles for years.

    Don't forget 2006, 2008, etc.

The whole "Sony owns the songs and that's why" argument fails because all the same songs are played on the recent bootlegs that they did put out.

Let's face it, it would cost the band the exact same to digitally distribute a bootleg from 1998 as it did for 2008. They just don't want all of our money just yet ;)

Did anyone else notice that not all the dates listed are correct show dates? There was no NYC date on 6-25-06, and there was one other that was wrong(Chile date was off too!). Therefore, take the info with a grain of salt. If Pearl Jam and/or Target put out this release, the dates would not be incorrect. Peace!

Hmm you do have a point... the release was from Universal Music RUSSIA.

Oh I can assure you that I have a "freaking grip"

The "slap in the face" remark was solely based on their use of the phrase "vault" and saying that the shows would span their career, not the songs.

    EDIT

I'm not so lazy right now... This is actually from a Yahoo story that was just posted yesterday.

"The Target discs will link to a virtual "vault" of 11 concerts spanning Pearl Jam's career, from which fans can choose two. The band will also create an organic cotton T-shirt to be sold at Target, with proceeds earmarked for the hunger relief charity Feeding America. And in September, a Cameron Crowe-directed TV ad will air featuring footage shot during a private performance at Seattle's Showbox in late May."

Am I wrong in thinking that the Ten Club CDs will also allow access to the "vault" and two downloads? I thought the whole point in doing this 2-concert-download thing was so that it wouldn't be like people would have to buy the album twice, just to get bonus content (usually the case with Target, Best Buy, etc editions...when they have "exclusive" DVD or bonus tracks).

Won't we be able to download these two shows WITH the ten club CDs we've all preordered? I thought that was the whole point...anyone with the CD could put it in their computer and link up to the website for the downloads. I only have one of those concerts (chilled out on the collecting of bootlegs after the 2000 & 2003 tour, only have a handful from each tour after that), so I'd take 2 of them, if it's free anyway.

Don't forget that it was stated that the vault will remain open, so it is possible that they will add more shows, including pre 2000 shows. I'm hopeful anyway.

It's not "songs" it's recordings. How do i put this simply. If you taped the band in 1997 and sold the bootlegs Sony could sue you because they own rights to the recording and you can't release it without their permission.
Music business isn't pure money for artists as some like to believe. Besides it was posted on another message bord a while ago that the shows would be recent already released bootlegs because of legal issues with Sony over older shows. The same person also mentioned that there could be additions in the future which is also mentioned in the press release from Universal.

and also these shows aren't for us...the band is trying to expand their fan base...by offering more recent shows, most of all of their albums are represented (i'm assuming these shows do that...i didn't look it up but i'm sure some anal compulsive here will point it out if they don't)

Yes, the term "Vault" made some of us "assume" that they would be previously unreleased shows and/or older shows. However, these are "free"(I'm sure we already paid for them one way or another, i.e. concert tickets, official bootlegs and the other thousands we've spent along the way.) But let's hope that we do get some of the epic shows like the Vic, either with the new CD or in the future.

    Oh and I found this

    http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html?as ... pacer&LID=

Available only at Target, Target.com and iTunes.com/Target, Pearl Jams newest CD Backspacer featuring the hit singles The Fixer and Got some, including bonus content of full concert downloads.

That says NOTHING of a 'vault' or of spanning the career.

I really can't stand when bands/record companies reference a hit single that hasn't ever been on the radio. As far as I know, very few people have heard the studio version of Got Some therefore it's not a hit. That is almost as lame as the group of shows they chose to release. I wonder if they will be incomplete...al la the MTV Unplugged release.
