This must have been mentioned elsewhere but I cant find it, "Next month, Pearl Jam plans to release its new album simultaneously on CD and in Rock Band" according to last weeks NYTimes Sunday Magazine. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/16/magaz ... wanted=all

Why is everyone okay with PJ teaming up with Target. If you wanna do an exclusive release and make a stand, have it exclusively in the mom and pop stores and the 10C web site. Why didn't they exclude all the mainstream stores? That would be something the Pearl Jam I know would do.
Plus, now I read all these people that are gonna buy two just for the t-shirt. The 10C members should get first class treatment, especially if you pre-order it. This means we get the T-shirt too. I feel like we also should have had a heads up on the PJ/Target relationship. I am part of this club because I want to keep up with whats going on with the band and to hear about a major partnership (in my eyes) over the radio first...the 10C should be on top of things and POST THE NEWS!
Please respond and let me know why no one else is questioning this partnership.

It's been questioned, but TC has made an announcement about it. Their "exclusive" with Target isn't quite exclusive. Target is their Big Box "partner". They are also going to be selling thru mom-and-pops as you recommend, and also directly... and I would have to imagine also on iTunes. So... there's 4 avenues to buy this thing.

first off, this topic has been beaten to death & discussed over & over again. but here's my take on it:
in order to distribute their record, they need a larger vehicle to help with distribution. in the past, it was their label that did this. now, they are free from their contract & have control over how their music/merch is distributed. before, Sony/Epic had the majority of the control in terms of marketing, advertising, merchandising, etc. in order to still be able to reach those places that don't have a mom & pop store (like where i live), they need some help. enter Target. Target provides the distribution, advertising with the bands' input. Pearl Jam has more control over their music & everything that goes along with it more than they ever have. they obviously did their homework & shopped the idea around to other big box stores & from what it sounds like, non of the other stores wanted to allow the band to sell the record at those independent mom & pop stores---they wanted sole distribution rights. but Target like the idea. on top of that, the Target Corp gives millions of dollars every year to charities that sit well with the band & it's company philosophy. remember...they're a band..first & foremost always about the music. but music is a BUSINESS. and like any other business, you need to protect yourself & the value of your work. make sense?

I know it has been beat to death but I wanted to take time to digest the news and see what others thought, and I have heard these arguments before. I am also aware that music is a business, but I think they have made "unpopular" choices before and that they don't need a "larger vehicle". There are no mom and pop stores where I live either, but they have the web site. I also agree that if they had to choose, Target was the best choice since they donate to charities and they allowed them to not be "exclusive" therefore I don't dare call them "sell-outs", but it is borderline with me.
I appreciate your input, but I still feel like I am the only one left with a sour taste in my mouth. They are still and always will be my favorite band. I just feel like they could have made a bigger stand.

Exactly, they are other avenues than to link up with one certain store and inadvertently advertise for them.

I wouldn't call them sellouts for the Target deal.
However, for them having "Bud Light presents Pearl Jam" as well as the Verizon Wireless screens on two parts of the stage, and fliers of the Verizon Wireless logo and their photo on it... well, yeah, that's pretty much selling out. (puts on helmet, but got a hard head)

Probably because they want to make money off of the record? You aren't going to make any money selling just at mom and pop stores because there aren't many mom and pop record stores anymore unless you live in a large city. Even in a large city like Atlanta a lot of mom and pop stores have closed in the last couple of years. And selling just on their website would really limit the exposure the record got. They reason they choose Target over Best Buy is because Best Buy would not let them sell the record at mom and pop stores too and online like Target is allowing. Sucks it's not being sold everywhere because I hate exclusive releases but Pearl Jam is in the business of making money, if they weren't they wouldn't be charging 83 bucks for a ticket to their show.

Yeah I believe that is the text book definition of selling out. If I was still in high school I would probably gotten pissed but I"m 27 with a wife and kid so I'm like make as much money as you can. Once I had to start dealing with real life problems and issues the idea of my favorite band selling out suddenly became the least important thing in the world. As long as I still get to hear the records and go to their shows that is all I care about. If they want to have sponsors, more power to them.
look, anything for them to make money so they can try and keep concert tixs prices down i'm all for.
and i'm glad pj is running their own shit now. i'm proud of them. we can hear the music the way they want us to hear it now. if target can be a stepping stone when they're begining on their own, that's great.
*~Pearl Jam will be blasted from speakers until morale improves~*

Take off your helmet... I completely agree with you.
Let me get this straight... there was a "Bud Light presents Pearl Jam" sign on stage? This year or last year? Are they doing the Verizon screens again this year? I thought the fliers, as well as the "free" t-shirts that were handed out last year ("free" because they said Verizon all over them... I would wear that if THEY paid ME...actually, not even then). The whole Verizon thing was a horrible move in my eyes, and to top it off, it didn't even lead to very good bootlegs (CD-Rs for $16...thanks, guys).

Thanks! I'm stressing about it, just because I need the money and it's been a little while, but it seemed positive at the time and when I talked to someone last week. I'll wait until after Monday's concert to worry too much.

At VA Beach there was a listing of concerts. Most of them had no sponsors, but a couple had "Bud Light Presents _________", including "Bud Light Presents Pearl Jam". I also asked the box office the flier of the events, so I had it to take with me, but I don't know what I did with it. I emailed the info to TC, thinking PJ would never want a beer company "presenting" them... but maybe they do.

PJ is taking a risk by self-financing the new record on their own record label, so the Target deal mitigates their losses if the album doesn't sell well. Usually, when a band makes a deal with Target or Walmart, they are guaranteed to sell a certain number of units. Also, Target pays much quicker; most distributors don't pay record labels for months and months.

same thing goes with ticketmaster i do believe.
bands get paid before the show or even before tickets go on sale.
i'm just saying....
sorry to get off topic.
Bands get paid by the promoter after a performance. The promoter's accountant meets with the band's accountant, and they look over the expenses of the venue, staff, catering, etc, and remove those costs from the revenue. Then payments are made. At least that's how things worked about 10 years ago when I was working club, arena and stadium concerts. A promoter is basically guaranteeing that when a band shows up to play, that they will get paid.

If I may:
The Promoter books the show with the band's agent. Promoter gives the agent a deposit of 50% of the guaranteed performance fee, which the agent holds until after the show (that is why you need to have a reputable agent who won't steal your money).
Ticketmaster sells the tickets, and holds the money until after the show, then, a few days later, they release the funds to the promoter (promoters need a healthy cash-flow since they pay the band in full before TM pays them).
After the show, the promoter pays the band the other 50% of their guaranteed performance fee, and any "overages" (addtl profit) if applicable. This is what is known as "settling the show". If a show doesn't sell well, the band still gets their guaranteed fee, and the promoter may lose money on the show.

That is still how it works. My husband is a promoter and works closely with Jam (the main promoter in the Chicagoland area). Usually there is some type of guarantee on a performance and the band will make a percentage of any overage of that guarantee - paid the night of the show or after.

Jesus Christ, I am tired as a mother fuckerof hearing this tired claim.
FYI...This isn't fan club information!!! It is Target information from an employee there about how they are going to sell and display the upcoming album. Ten Club does not work at Target!!!!!

Yeah, pearljam_addiction, don't worry at all about him. He trolled a thread when I confirmed PJ in Philly... he didn't like that I called the box office once, and that they told me "yes", and tried to make a thing about it.
he's a

I would like to clarify that I did not call them nor do I think of them as sell outs.

I'd like to know where they had "bud light presents Pear jam"?!?!

Good luck! my wife used to work there and really enjoy it. They treat their people well!
I emailed the info to TC, thinking PJ would never want a beer company "presenting" them... but maybe they do.

same thing goes with ticketmaster i do believe.
bands get paid before the show or even before tickets go on sale.
i'm just saying....
sorry to get off topic.

Edit: Looks like CJMST3K beat me by a minute!
That is still how it works. My husband is a promoter and works closely with Jam (the main promoter in the Chicagoland area). Usually there is some type of guarantee on a performance and the band will make a percentage of any overage of that guarantee - paid the night of the show or after.

my point was a lot of companies etc get paid up front.
sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes it's not. ....for the consumer.
FYI...This isn't fan club information!!! It is Target information from an employee there about how they are going to sell and display the upcoming album. Ten Club does not work at Target!!!!!
