yeah they I do, I used to work as a storeman for myer at the melbourne cbd store, and the virgin guys would always let us know when they actually got certain albums so we could go buy them as soon as they hit the shelves and that was always the afternoon before.

They may receive the albums early but they aren't allowed to sell them early. When we owned our little record shop, we used to let select people buy them as soon as we received them but we couldn't scan the sale through until the day it is actually released because the sales went into a big system connected to the various labels and we could get in trouble. So I'd say places like JB Hifi etc would be connected to this same system.

yeah thats usually the case, but jb is a great example of a store that will sell stuff earlier then its meant to. trying to think of examples but they are escaping me at the moment.

J&B Hi-Fi always breaks the embargo on new releases - especially the big ones. I expect to see Backspacer on the shelves before Friday the 18th in Oz. Maybe even the Wednesday.
