KoL and Pearl Jam...
It seems that with Pearl Jam's newest album (also the single), along with the Kings Of Leon's newest album, both are going for that more widespread audience, or so people say. Personally, I don't agree, but that's not the point. What it seems to come down is that the hardcore fans of Pearl Jam and KoL (There are more bands you could say, these are the bands I picked for this post) feel that by making a more commercially viable album, us diehard, manic, and downright obsessive fans will have to share our dear music loves with the uninitiated. I'm a diehard fan of both fans, and although I personally never felt this, I have to say that as much as I would love to see more attention given to Pearl Jam, and KoL, when I think about it, I don't want to share my love of these bands with "lesser" folk. Just wondering what other people's opinions are on this issue.

How are they overrated? There's nobody callin them the best band in the world. They ARE one of the most popular rock bands right now. There's really hardly anything on the radio as good as them, as well.
yeahhhhh this sex is on fire, wahh wahh wahh *more whiny singing with stupid lyrics*

Dont judge their music based on SOF though check out Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak, I love OBTN but I know lots of people who are not crazy about that album, dont toss them aside based on one song though...
+1
i've heard more than sex on fire and i don't like them, i guess its just their singer i cant stand, nothing wrong with the music but the whiny singer is annoying as hell.

I heard Creed played the same setlist every night when they went on tour.
I guess it's all perception.
LOL @ the whiny singer
I personally luv him, he wasn't as whiny on the first 2 records though

So does Bob Dylan, Stones, Neil Young and the Who. And last I checked, they are all pretty amazing bands. So, please don't compare KOL to Creed based on setlists. KOL are nothing like Creed, except being extreme drunks and jesus-freaks. KOL are more rocking, bluesy and most of all, 'real' unlike Creed. Before the KOL's latest album, they were essentially an indy band, who found international success with little help from radio/tv. I've been a fan of KOL from the start, and their first two albums are legendary in my opinion, even though they are very basic musically.
I'll admit it, I don't like how so many people have become KOL fans because of sex on fire and use somebody. Those are probably their worst two songs from their entire catalogue. But at the same time, with all this exposure and commercial success, it's a lot easier to get tickets to an arena gig, instead of a bar gig. So, am I happy and will be seeing KOL again in September!
it wouldnt be KOL without Caleb
Essentially, that was what I brought up in the first post. I do like SOF and Use Somebody, but I do think there are better songs. I personally think their first album might be the best. I agree with what you said, though.
I completely agree with you. Their new album is a great piece of work, but it's very different from what the band has done in the past.
As far as that "pop" comment about Pearl Jam that I made earlier, I was just kind of echoing what some people on the boards bring up. I personally don't feel that way at all, but it served to make a point.
Let the arguement begin
ps mmj should be just as popular or more cause they're better
If you've only seen them once, how in the world would you know?
If you've seen them multiple times and hold this opinion, you're sorely mistaken.
That's not true.
want to be enlightened"
Aha Shake Heartbreak is right up there too (a close second to Y&YM)
There last 2 aren't in the same league IMO, but are nevertheless pretty good listening in parts.
However, in a live environment they are bit of a paradox really. Their sound is awesome. Really good. They really cross that album/live crevasse really well, the ravine of death that so many other bands fall into and die. However, their (lack of) on stage presence and set list rigiditity really take away from their awesome sound.
I've seen them 7 times in total, 6 whilst opening for PJ and they even said the same things between the same songs, night after night. As they get older hopefully they'll relax.
if somethings wrong, i put a little fixin' on it... is better?
now pearl jam
Sex on Fire is a good song!!! ... you so craysee essey
Pretty selfish of me but it does really grate when my mates (who love dance, poppy crap) are saying how briliant KOL are (purely baseing it on sex on fire track). I've been there right from the beginning of KOL career and sex on fire is not truly them.
On a good note, I hear that their next album is supposedly more grungy and hopefully less accesssible to these sex on fire fans.

Regarding setlists changing etc, I guess at the moment KOL maybe feel that they have to play all the songs everyone wants to hear every night. Bob Dylan probably wasn't the best example of static sets as he doesn't play the same setlist every night, mixes it up quite a lot, of 14-17 songs in the set there's usually 5-6 the same each night.
Mixing up the setlist doesn't make a show great, more often than not it means lesser known songs are played and done a dis-service as the band may not have rehearsed them. You could see the same setlist twice, one night it might not be a good show, the next it might be immense. Just depends on whether the band are on it hat night.
KOL... I've never quite got the hype about them, they're good at what they do, it's just nothing that hasn't been heard before IMO. The last album hasn't done them any favours, but they're still better than The Killers!
However, I've seen them seven times, including four in the last year (V Festival in Aug 08, O2 in Dec 08 and O2 again twice last month), and while there was a certain amount of crossover in their sets, there was still big variation in them. The set at the O2 on June 30th was brilliant, contained almost everything I wanted to hear. Also, in that year, their stage presence has improved expedentially, the June gigs contained much more movement and crowd interaction than, say, at the Astoria in 2003 or 4 (can't quite remember which year it was) and I'd always have picked the Astoria for a gig due to its intimacy
