If you've only seen them once, how in the world would you know?
If you've seen them multiple times and hold this opinion, you're sorely mistaken.0 -

Youth and Young Manhood is a seriously killer album. Really. One of the best debuts out there. For anyone reading this thread that hasn't had a listen of this, you need to drop everything now and get a copy. I remember listening to it thinking "wow... this is what the love child of CCR and Aerosmith would sound like"
Aha Shake Heartbreak is right up there too (a close second to Y&YM)
There last 2 aren't in the same league IMO, but are nevertheless pretty good listening in parts.
However, in a live environment they are bit of a paradox really. Their sound is awesome. Really good. They really cross that album/live crevasse really well, the ravine of death that so many other bands fall into and die. However, their (lack of) on stage presence and set list rigiditity really take away from their awesome sound.
I've seen them 7 times in total, 6 whilst opening for PJ and they even said the same things between the same songs, night after night. As they get older hopefully they'll relax.0 -
yeahhhhh this sex is on fire, wahh wahh wahh *more whiny singing with stupid lyrics*
if somethings wrong, i put a little fixin' on it... is better?"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0 -

now pearl jam
i do agree that i dont wanna share my band with the "lesser folks", but do not agree that pearl jam are going for a more "widespread audience". the fixer is alot of fun. let the guys have fun too. Christchurch, New Zealand 20090 -
I agree with the original poster.
Pretty selfish of me but it does really grate when my mates (who love dance, poppy crap) are saying how briliant KOL are (purely baseing it on sex on fire track). I've been there right from the beginning of KOL career and sex on fire is not truly them.
On a good note, I hear that their next album is supposedly more grungy and hopefully less accesssible to these sex on fire fans.2006 ░▒▓ Astoria, Dublin, Leeds, Reading, Lisbon, Paris, Verona, Athens

First of all, I hate this elitist crap about people who aren't hardcore fans being "lesser" people at shows. It's just bollocks, everyone starts off only knowing a few songs and often it's the live show that wins people over. Without these people at the shows the audience would stagnate and no-one wants that.
Regarding setlists changing etc, I guess at the moment KOL maybe feel that they have to play all the songs everyone wants to hear every night. Bob Dylan probably wasn't the best example of static sets as he doesn't play the same setlist every night, mixes it up quite a lot, of 14-17 songs in the set there's usually 5-6 the same each night.
Mixing up the setlist doesn't make a show great, more often than not it means lesser known songs are played and done a dis-service as the band may not have rehearsed them. You could see the same setlist twice, one night it might not be a good show, the next it might be immense. Just depends on whether the band are on it hat night.
KOL... I've never quite got the hype about them, they're good at what they do, it's just nothing that hasn't been heard before IMO. The last album hasn't done them any favours, but they're still better than The Killers! The secret to a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits0 -
The big difference between PJ and KoL sets is that PJ have 9 studio albums + dozens of b-sides to call upon, plus the covers they do, while Kings of Leon have 4 albums and not many b-sides (a lot of their singles contain live versions of existing songs). KoL simply don't have the amount of material to call on to allow them to massively vary their sets.
However, I've seen them seven times, including four in the last year (V Festival in Aug 08, O2 in Dec 08 and O2 again twice last month), and while there was a certain amount of crossover in their sets, there was still big variation in them. The set at the O2 on June 30th was brilliant, contained almost everything I wanted to hear. Also, in that year, their stage presence has improved expedentially, the June gigs contained much more movement and crowd interaction than, say, at the Astoria in 2003 or 4 (can't quite remember which year it was) and I'd always have picked the Astoria for a gig due to its intimacy0 -
I still don't know what to think of them. They have some great melodies but many songs of theirs are so alike and by the way I really hated Use somebody after about the 4th listen...
I saw them perform in 2007 but they were not as good as everyone thinks. They shared the stage with Incubus and Pearl Jam and imho KOL couldn't even hold the candle to them!!!Budapest.Budapest.Arnhem.Antwerpen.Vienna.Madrid.Katowice.Nova_rock.Nijmegen.Rotterdam.Berlin.Dublin.Belfast.London.Venice.Prague.Stockholm.Copenhagen.Vienna.Leeds.Milton_keynes.Padova.Prague.Seattle1.Seattle2.Chicago1.Budapest.Cracow.Vienna..>>>LONDON.BERLIN1.BERLIN2

I totally love the Kings and glad I got to see them this year here in Miami and going again to see them in ACL and flying up to Atlanta to see them the week after
.. did I mention I really really love them? ....anyways...
While obviously they dont have as much material as Pearl Jam or as many B-sides and they don't play covers, I think they could probably change the setlist a little tiny bit though, they do have 4 albums. The setlist is the same every night, they've been throwing some of their old stuff at the last few concerts in Europe, such as Trani and Red Morning Light (I hope they keep Red Morning Light in the setlist as that is my fav from Y&YM).
I think they could change it up a bit though, but sometimes I think that I'm just spoiled by Pearl Jam and that not every band has such a diverse setlist every night and since that's what I have been used to with PJ I tend to expect other bands to do the same."Without the album covers, where do you clean your pot?" - EV0 -
