Favorite opener ... Of the Girl ... I'll take that one over all others mentioned.
While it was a little too up tempo at San Francisco in 2006 ... in Mansfield, 8/29/2000 ... simply beautiful!
I'd rank the other regulars I've heard as such:
Hard to Imagine
Release
Can't Keep
Sometimes
Oceans
Please note, I rank these 1 - 1a, 1b, etc ... as no matter where I am, it's the beginning of a PJ show, so, I'm going to be freakin' ecstatic no matter what.
+1!!!!!!
Of the girl would be the best opener!
...but I don't mind, I would love every other song to be the opener of a PJ show.......except "Yellow Ledbetter"!
I didn't put Wash above, as it's played so rarely, but, hearing them kick off Mansfield 2 last year with it was outstanding.
up here in my tree in Vienna 2006: Vienna 2009: Berlin 2010: London ~ Berlin 2012: Amsterdam 1+2 ~ Werchter ~ Arras ~ Berlin 1+2 2014: Milano ~ Trieste ~ Vienna ~ Berlin 2018: Padova ~ Rome 2022: Budapest ~ Vienna EV London/Hammersmith 2012 EV Berlin/Zitadelle 2017
Alright I wanted to throw up a little question to the masses. My friend and I have been having this arguement for the past few years about which song is a better open to a Pearl Jam show and I wanted to finally settle the score with him. Which song would you rather hear (or do you think is more appropriate to open a show) "Hard To Imagine" or "Release"?
My vote is "Hard To Imagine" and the 2008 tour solidified that in my mind. Listen to the shows it opened last year.
good chat, but i'm guessing this isnt really helping settle the score for you!
Yellow Ledbetter into Soon Forget that would be funny.
Seriously...
I would love to see Hard to Imagine > Blood for Chicago night 1. I think a better discussion is what the second song should be Corduroy is soooo overdone.
Chicago 6/29/98 - Nashville 8/17/00 - Cleveland 4/25/03- Chicago 6/18/03
Chicago 5/16/06 - Milwaukee 6/30/06 - Bonnaroo 6/14/08 - Milwaukee (EV)8/19/08
Chicago 8/23/09 - St. Louis 5/4/10 - East Troy 9/3/11 - East Troy 9/4/11
Minor League Park 7/19/13 - Milwaukee 10-20-14 - Bonnaroo 6/11/16
Minor League Park 8/20/16 - Minor League Park 8/22/16 Minor League Park 8/18/18 - Minor League Park 8/20/18 - Los Angeles 4/16/20
Well if I had my way, Can't Keep would open every show
+1
But out of the two choices in this thread, I would choose Release over HTI. Only becasue HTI was used as an opener too much in 2008.

Wash.
The first time I saw them, they opened with it and I've loved it for an opener ever since. I wish they did that song more often.
Of your two songs in the original question, it's actually a tie but I'll say Release for your poll.
Any slow song works for me as an opener; release, long road, sometimes, can't keep, of the girl....
I love the transition from slow opener to kick ass 2nd, 3rd, 4th songs. best part of the show.
especially when those songs are: spin, brain of j, hail hail, animal....
lol to be honest for an opener i think itd be awesome for them to just go into even flow or something immense
maybe alive too, you know screw up the rules abit
Saw what might be the only Alive opener ever ... 2003 Dallas ... I think they opened with E-flo once on that tour as well. Pittsburgh or something.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do

Me too! But Alive has been used as an opener since. Newcastle.

Release! Although I did catch Present Tense as an opener in St. Louis 2003 which was very good... to me, nothing beats release live.
My fondest PJ concert memory was a Kansas City concert where it was pouring rain, I was soaked, Sandstone Amphitheatre was flooding near the front and they came out and opened with Release. During the song, a bolt of lightning hit and Ed said "Hi Dad"... it seemed magical at the time. Incidentally, it was 2003 as well. All this time I've thought the best concerts I've seen were in 1998 but man 2003 was good. They're all great! I can't wait for Chicago!!!
Release by far. There's just something bout that song that sets the mood. The garden was fucking church like when they opened up with release. When you get release as an opener, its gonna be a special/magical night.
I'd love to get breakerfall as opener then right into intersteller overdrive/corduroy.
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight
Sammi: Wanna just break up?

either way Hard to imagine for me everytime!!
No definately not settleing my score. I lost this bet and five dollars. Terrible news
I enjoyed Wash as an opener when I saw it in Mansfield.
Of the boots I have, I'd say this was the best, as in Mansfield 08 and the Gorge 06 (I think)...but I also really, really loved Can't Keep at Hartford last year. As to the question, IMO: Release.
I always wanted to see a show where they opened with "Nothing As It Seems". But my vote is for "Release" as an opener in this case. "Hard to Imagine" would work better as the first song of an encore.

I prefer Last Exit as an opener though.
I really want to hear that as an opener... hell I just really want to hear it period.

I'm thinking of seeing them in Santa Barbara just for that reason.

Slow version...it helps to get the vocal chords and hands and fingers warmed up so they can kick ass for the rest of the show.
But any version is fine with me.

Got that at Randall's Island in '96. It was badass and set the tone for the night.
Wildest pit I've ever seen.
