    I wouldn't say he's one of the best technically, but he is master of his own style. However, Jeff has a presence in PJ's songs, and artistic merrit(album covers, booklet photography) that not a lot of bass players have. He's just fucking right for Pearl Jam.

    Plus, he's able to say that he was a building block in the making of the Seattle Sound. Jeff Ament is the shit, all many levels.

    I'd say he's in the convo as far as maintream rock band bass players go, but he's definitely not the technically proficient bass shred type.

    He's just a great a classic groove based player. I think he deserves a mention, at the very least. I still think there are 10 pretty well known bass players that I would have no argument putting above JA. Also true what was mentioned about his hand in all things PJ.

    I don't think that Ed is the best singer ever (best writer though!), I don't think that Jeff is the best bassist, that Mike and Stone are the best guitarists nor that Matt is the best drummer. But together they are a great band.

    I do love it when Jeff plays the stand up bass. It really adds a great vibe to songs like Indifference, etc.

    ^^You guys should really listen to Victor Wooten play. His version of Amazing Grace is great. First heard it on the Gov't Mule documentary Rising Low, directed by Mike Gordon(bass for Phish). Covers the recording of Mule's Deep End albums, where they had an all star cast of bass players sit in for their deceased bassist, Allen Woody.

    Anyway, Wooten is a monster.

    Claypool is a man possessed. So many nights ive sat at home, trying to figure out the noises that man makes. I just cant do any of it.

    Agree with all the people saying PJ members are brilliant as a unit, and Jeff is a great player. I also love his songwriting, its great. The man loves some weird stuff. His influence in the bands overall sound is pretty great too. And man, that big fat warm sound from his standup, phwaor.
