But to consider him one of the best...? I like that story where Les Claypool tried to get in Metallica:
"In 1986, after the death of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, Claypool auditioned to play bass for Metallica, playing the song "Master of Puppets" on his bass. In Metallica's Behind the Music, Claypool said that during the audition he jokingly asked the others if they wanted to "jam on some Isley Brothers tunes." James Hetfield remarked that Claypool was not awarded the job because "he was too good"."

Matt Freeman from Rancid is my personal favorite bass player tho...
I guess I'm the only one who understands what I've written.

i miss though those hat's he used to wear. and his side project with three fish.
one of my favorite side projects.
they did promise on much music together they would play 2000 in instanbul.
never happened.
please next time, if you form up, play east coast canada then!
jeffs the fuckin man! go listen to "the real me" and tell me he didnt do ox justice! this wouldnt require so much debate if they would just turn him up in the mix
maybe not wooten or claypool or flea but PJs music doesnt call for that... and id say jeff has a better ear as a songwriter than any of those other guys... instead of just mindless funktastic slappin (not that theres anything wrong with that) ... but comparing jeff to them is like comparing stone to satriani and vai
http://seanbriceart.com/
I prefer my bass to be sort of laid back and groovy (listen to Faithfull, for instance). Les and Flea are more ostentatious ... more right up in your face. Which is fine. But unless you want Pearl Jam to turn into a funk band, I'm not sure it works for them.
Jeff is one of the best at what he does. Comparing him to Flea or Claypool is like saying Mike McCready is a better guitar player than Stone. It's two different kinds of guitar playing.
for the least they could possibly do
...bass is really an ear-thumping instrument.

ummm also gotta say i love hearing jeremy live just because of him
Fuckin' A! Jeff Ament is the shit!
I wouldn't say he's one of the best technically, but he is master of his own style. However, Jeff has a presence in PJ's songs, and artistic merrit(album covers, booklet photography) that not a lot of bass players have. He's just fucking right for Pearl Jam.
Plus, he's able to say that he was a building block in the making of the Seattle Sound. Jeff Ament is the shit, all many levels.

same happened to me during junior high & high school. then later university kicked in and thing's turned to the darkside.
I remember catching Three Fish, I think it was at Mercury Lounge back in 96 or 97. PJ does have a lot of side projects!

I'd say he's in the convo as far as maintream rock band bass players go, but he's definitely not the technically proficient bass shred type.
He's just a great a classic groove based player. I think he deserves a mention, at the very least. I still think there are 10 pretty well known bass players that I would have no argument putting above JA. Also true what was mentioned about his hand in all things PJ.
Some others that I'd probably bring up
Entwistle
John Paul Jones
Justin Chancellor-more b/c the style of music, and much in the same way I'd mention Adam Jones in a guitar debate
Flea
McCartney
Geezer Butler
Jack Bruce
Cliff Burton
Robert Deleo
Geddy Lee
I don't think that Ed is the best singer ever (best writer though!), I don't think that Jeff is the best bassist, that Mike and Stone are the best guitarists nor that Matt is the best drummer. But together they are a great band.
The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts.

"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
I think that's the best way to put it.
With all due respect to Jeff, Les Claypool is probably the best bass player I've ever heard in my life. Talent wise Les is second to none.
I do love it when Jeff plays the stand up bass. It really adds a great vibe to songs like Indifference, etc.
