He's good but not one of the best. Would you seriously put him up there with the likes of Victor Wooten, Flea, the guy from Primus?0

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Jeff Ament.
But to consider him one of the best...? I like that story where Les Claypool tried to get in Metallica:
"In 1986, after the death of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, Claypool auditioned to play bass for Metallica, playing the song "Master of Puppets" on his bass. In Metallica's Behind the Music, Claypool said that during the audition he jokingly asked the others if they wanted to "jam on some Isley Brothers tunes." James Hetfield remarked that Claypool was not awarded the job because "he was too good"."You're not what you own - Ian MacKaye, Fugazi

I loved Jeff's fretless slither on Ten - & always wondered why he got away from that because I thought it helped to give PJ a distinctive sound. I guess, like Eddies growl, that's just one of the pieces lost in the band's evolution. A great bass player to be sure though...I smile, but who am I kidding...0

The good thing is that in a band like this you don't need to be the best or fastest or most badass player in the world. You just need to know how and when to deliver. And I think we all know that he does!0

Ament has a great groove to him... His bass line in "Save You" is killer...
Matt Freeman from Rancid is my personal favorite bass player tho...9/28/96, 8/28/98, 8/29/98, 8/18/00, 10/8/00, 10/9/00, 4/28/03, 6/22/03, 7/8/03, 7/9/03, 10/2/04, 10/5/04, 10/1/05, 10/3/05, 5/28/06, 6/20/08, 6/25/08, 10/27/09, 10/30/09, 10/31/09, 5/18/10, 5/20/10, 5/21/10, 10/21/13, 10/22/13, 4/28/16, 4/29/16, 8/22/16, 9/26/21, 10/1/21, 10/2/21, 5/3/22, 5/6/220 -
I love Jeff!! It's hard to compare him to others without ending up comparing the whole band with other bands.
I guess I'm the only one who understands what I've written.Makes me ache, makes me shake...
...is it so wrong to think that love can keep us safe?0 -

Jeff's a very tasteful player (ie. he knows when to let it rip and when to hang back), and to me that's one of the most important aspects of being a bass player."We get these pills to swallow... how they stick in your throat... Tastes like gold..."0

my idol through junior high & highschool. i used to dress up like ament. '92, collecting & viewing live video bootlegs of him & ed just flying around stage, jumping from front speaker amp's, off dave's drum set stand etc.. i was so moved i would do that in my room of the bed with my bass guitar. lol. during '95, seeing that rugrat doll wrapped around his bass guitar strap, and anything else he would hang, the canadian flag @ mudfest '93 etc.. he is awesome & still today, the guy still has it!
i miss though those hat's he used to wear. and his side project with three fish.
one of my favorite side projects.
they did promise on much music together they would play 2000 in instanbul.
never happened.
please next time, if you form up, play east coast canada then!0 -
haha... i love that picture... wheres that from?
jeffs the fuckin man! go listen to "the real me" and tell me he didnt do ox justice! this wouldnt require so much debate if they would just turn him up in the mix
maybe not wooten or claypool or flea but PJs music doesnt call for that... and id say jeff has a better ear as a songwriter than any of those other guys... instead of just mindless funktastic slappin (not that theres anything wrong with that) ... but comparing jeff to them is like comparing stone to satriani and vai0 -
jeff is good...seems like a cool guy toThis is Not For You0
-
Far be it from me to sit here and say Flea and Les aren't good bass players --- obviously, they're phenomenal -- but they aren't really my cup of tea.
I prefer my bass to be sort of laid back and groovy (listen to Faithfull, for instance). Les and Flea are more ostentatious ... more right up in your face. Which is fine. But unless you want Pearl Jam to turn into a funk band, I'm not sure it works for them.
Jeff is one of the best at what he does. Comparing him to Flea or Claypool is like saying Mike McCready is a better guitar player than Stone. It's two different kinds of guitar playing.everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do0 -
I hope Jeff's head is feeling ok.
...bass is really an ear-thumping instrument.ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

Jeff is the straw that stirs the drink. Love me some Jeff.baby boomers selling you rumors of their history, forcing youth away from the truth of what's real today.0

Jeff does some crazy ass stuff but its very tastefully done, he doesn't over do it... not as "in your face" as the dudes you mentioned"Well, I think this band is incapable of sucking."
