Pearl Jam Playing Stadiums...

Today I was thinking about the different kind of venues that I've seen bands in. I've been everywhere from small clubs to open fields of hundreds of thousands of people. When I think of where I've seen Pearl Jam, it's ALWAYS been in an arena or amphitheater. In my opinion, the semi-outdoor amphitheaters (the Meadows, Great Woods, Susquehanna, PNC) as well as the fully outdoor ampitheatres (Red Rocks, the Gorge) are amongst the best places to see a band. Being outdoors and with a greater number of fans creates, at least for me, a better show.

In my opinion, there's no better place to experience this than in a stadium. If you've ever been in the front few rows at a stadium, you know the exhilaration of turning around and just seeing a sea of people. I think that Pearl Jam would be able to sell out most of the major football or baseball stadiums around the US. I understand that people don't appreciate the lack on intimacy, but I think the vibe of the crowd outweighs this.

So, discuss it - how do you all feel about Pearl Jam playing stadiums?

    Being they are leaning towards a fall/winter tour. I am all for indoor arenas.

    I love PJ to death, but they couldn't sell out most stadiums in the US if they gave 1/2 the tickets away.

    leave it to Billy Joel and The Beatles...though a show at the new yankee stadium would be a great way to cristen the new park

    There was a big thread on this last month I believe if somebody wants to dig it up. Most people gave a pretty decisive decision that they are against stadium shows.

    my first show was stadium .. Solder Field 1995 and i loved every minute .Might have been the acid but who cares . but nothing is as cool as a smaller venues .. peace

    I have seen Pearl Jam at a stadium, opening for the Stones, and was in the 6th row, so I know that experience. It was fucking awesome.

    Not to mention the tickets would be outrageous $$. The only way PJ could sell these out is if they did a tour with 5-6 other groups. Even then, I don't like the idea of that.

    well...in 2007 they sold out a soccer stadium in Poland and I was so blown away by the crowd that I had to check the next day what the stats were and I read somewhere it was 70,000+.....and even though Linkin Park opened up, it didn't get packed until Pearl Jam came on....who would have thought..Poland of all places
    I love the indoor shows much more, but this was amazing...

    They've played stadiums all over the world at various times in their career including the US, though more minor stadiums (Randalls Island 96 & Seattle & Montana 98 spring to mind) except for Soldier Field. I think if they wanted to they could play stadium shows in certain markets, especially those that they usually play 2 or more shows in. Okay so they may have to think a little more about who they get to support them but if they put a strong bill together they could defo do it IMO. Now would be the time to do it with the Ten re-issue, but I don't think they will do it as they'd have to compromise themselves in order to shift tickets. Also look at the stadium tour they did in South America in 2005, they played stadiums that had far (Sao Paulo) bigger capacities than the 40,000 tickets they restricted promoters to selling. I also saw them at the Frankenstadion (Rock Im Park) in 2000 as part of my 7 Euro shows tour and it was far from their worst show I've seen them, I actually quite enjoyed the stadium experience as it was different from the arena experience night after night. I'm not sur eI'd like to see an entire stadium tour but a few mixed into the tour could make things interesting.

    Opinions are very divided on stadiums tbh. Small arenas are fantastic because of their intimacy, but personally I would love nothing more than to see Pearl Jam playing a packed out wembley stadium to 90,000 or so people - and yes it would sell out!

    Stadiums can be really amazing as long as the sound system is good.

    I also agree that Pearl Jam could sell out stadiums. Hell, the Foo Fighters did it last tour with 2 shitty no-name opening acts. I bet if Pearl Jam toured with Kings of Leon and My Morning Jacket, or even RHCP or someone ridiculous like that it would be easy to sell out.

    I've seen Pearl Jam at Downing Stadium (Randalls Island) and the Oakland Colliseum in '97 when they opened for the Stones. It was cool to be in such huge crowds, but the sound is not as good as Amphitheaters.

    PJ isn't a stadium band IMO. So I'm not for it.

    i'm sure back in the day people scoughed at arena shows...look how those turned out to be...the only problem i'd have is the echo...when you hear in baseball and the call up the next batter...

    Ever listen to the Perth bootleg from 2006? Full of that. Not sure what happened there, but I've never been to a staidum show where echo has been a serious problem.

    umm dmb sold out giant stadium, bruce has sold out stadiums, greenday even sold out giant stadium. Pearl jam can't even sell out arenas and people want a stadium tour, lol. Pink floyd will never runite ever again. Mason and glimour still hate waters.

    Stadiums???? The plan is for fans to fall off so we can see them in theaters down the road!!!! Thought we were on our way when they played the allstate arena instead of united center a few years back..United Center has to be the worst venue ive seen a show at..

    Soldier field was cool...but when your charging 85 bones to see a show its difficult to sell those arenas out.

    One of the reasons given for the Ed solo shows being so expensive are, "It's a smaller venue. It's more intimate. There are fewer tickets so, by simple supply and demand, they have to be more expensive."

    So which is it?

    That Chorzow Slaski stadium venue was one of the worst places I've been them. The worst was Perth's Subiaco Oval. Awful awful sound, huge reverb.

    No to stadiums.

    Cause once a band is big enough to sell out stadiums, the price of the ticket goes up. I have never seen an act play a football or baseball stadium and tickets sell less than $75 (not in this decade at least) A lot of people bitch on here that the tickets to PJ are more expensive than ever. You think if they did a stadium tour the price would go down?

    Stadium shows suck. The front row is farther from the stage then the 20th row in an arena. Bands that play stadiums do it out of sheer greed, rather than playing multiple nights in smaller venues.

    Hmm, I think PJ do pretty well in terms of ticket sales, okay so they may not sell out every show but not many do. They don't play the game like those you listed above, but they're still a stong touring act that's for sure. Oh and you forgot U2.
