    I'm not sure how crediting works when somebody just steps in to take a solo, but it's not a case where people found out Clapton played it after the Beatles had tried to play it off like George played the solo or anything similar.

    Macca in some of the later recording sessions would return to the studio at night and redo the drums, never telling Ringo, according to legend.
    I think Ringo's personality eclipsed his skill level.
    Its not to say he was a bad drummer, just average, and certainly skill wise eclipsed by many of his contemporaries (and don't sell Charlie Watts short) and most of today's successful drummers, including his son Zak, who is damn good.

    George had played it few times to John and Paul and they typically didnt like it. He after a while asked Eric Clapton to play lead while he looked after rhythm and vocals. It was his original version that was used on the recent album "Love"

    funny you mention that. i was watching last night the Biography of The Who, and it looks like Keith Moon was involved in Zack's learning how to play drums. also according to wiki Keith bought Zack his first pro drumset. Zack became The Who's fourth drummer.

    From what I've read, Zack idolized Keith Moon and it's very evident in the way he plays. I saw him with The Who years ago and he was crazy good -- perfect fit with Townshend, Daltry, and Entwistle!

    As for Ringo, I think he was the perfect drummer for the Beatles. I'm not a drummer but I do think he gets somewhat of a bum rap for not being good and/or innovative. I can't source it now, but I have read sentiments from reputable people that Ringo is a lot better and innovative than generally credited. Also as mentioned before, McCartney being a control freak and subbing his drum tracks for Ringo's probably went a long way in perpetuating this way of thinking.

    I can list probably 5-6 of my friends who are drummers (amateurs) that I would consider being better than Ringo.
    I think had the Beatles not taken off when they did, I'm almost certain Ringo would have been out of a job...

    And like others have said, Beatles songs don't take a highly technical drummer to play. He had a role and he did it. But I do think he was lucky to play with them because really anyone could have filled that role.

    What rock gods? They wipe the floor with the Stones and Floyd.

    Now Zep and Hendrix are another story, but the Beatles aren't too far behind them as far as flat out great playing goes.
