i always hear people calling him the luckiest guy in the world to get and keep his gig with the beatles.
but is he really that bad?

i just watched the vh1 classic doc type thing on plastic ono band and they had the producer playing ringos fills and he was raving about him and how he never does the same fill..ever. then ringo elaborated and so forth about his art.
i mean lennon liked him enough to invite over to his solo album he must have some talent.

i am not a drummer so this is a genuine question.
his drumming never bothered me. not like they were crazy metal but ya know what i mean.

i was at a bar on the coast and a beatles song came on. this old man (possibly insane) started screaming how they had to bring in a studio in for some of the drum parts cause ringo couldnt hack it. is this true?

im just curious 8-)

I was on the stage in '97 at Jones Beach when Ringo Starr & Friends played. I'm a drummer too. I found it interesting that Ringo and another drummer were playing "With A Little Help From My Friends". The stops and starts of that song are pretty simple, so I have them committed to memory. I noticed that Ringo was off (even though he recorded the song) but the other drummer was right - so it was weird seeing a drummer who knew the song, and the drummer who wrote the song playing it at the same time, differently... and the original drummer getting his own stuff wrong.

I think for Beatles stuff he did ok. A number of the early rock drummers just needed to get by, frankly. Look at Rolling Stones. A very basic player, but he fits the music.

So... yeah, Ringo is technically less talented than most of the drummers who post on this forum.

Didn't John Lennon also say "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."?

Definitely perfect for the job though.

I hear the same things. Its odd. They are without a doubt the most important band in history. Period. End of discussion. I see no point in trying to talk or be friends with anyone who disagrees with the statement I just made.

But its odd how completely worshipped John Paul and George are and were. If Paul puts out a record its a big hit and his live shows, even now, are quite legendary.

You freuently heard and hear talk about how Lennon and Mccartney are two of the best lyricists to ever have walked the face of the earth. And George certainly wasnt too shabby himself. People seem to absolutely adore Something. For that song along he is a legend.

But I agree, no one seems to see Ringo as a great drummer or a great musician. I can name a number of George solo songs, John solo songs and Paul solo songs, but with Ringo I am at a loss for words. I dont know of any or many solo songs.

Its odd. How could the best band that ever walked the earth, be made up of three people who are so legendary, and one who has a mediocre at best music career. Its odd too how none of the other so called best bands in history, the Led Zeps or The Who's, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Pink Floyd's, etc... they are all made up of some of the best musicians that have ever graced any stage, yet none of them have mediocre band members.

Why is this so with The Beatles?

i still say look at the rolling stones, however Charlie is better than Ringo. once people fell in love with "The Beatles" as four personalities, they couldn't change it. And with Ringo they were successful, so why change?

i think the other musicians made up for him sucking. :)

Simple answer: He was perfect for The Beatles. They did not need Neil Peart or Buddy Rich.

Didn't Clapton do some uncredited guitar work for the Beatles? Does that mean that George Harrison sucked? NO

there simple rock songs that's why he never gets any credit. Like another poster said, the drummers on this board could probably drum beatles songs. Just beacuse you're the fist band to make it big doesn't mean you're the best. I'd put bout 20 bands ahead of the beatles. Lyric wise there a good band but the actual band itself is nothing special

I always liked him. He fit the songs well and his understated playing was perfect for the beatles. If he'd been going nuts on fills and stuff, I don't think their albums would sound as good.

And Tomorrow Never Knows has some of the coolest drums I ever heard on a rock album.

I think the drums, while a simple beat, was perfectly appropriate and unique. It worked.

Not really on the subject of him as a drummer but my father was involved in the merseybeat and my uncle worked in the industry. They both told that he was crap by the way. But they both always said that John. Paul and Ringo are all absolute shit heads. George Harrison held god-like status with my father. He was held back bt Paul and Johns huge egos. But this only 2 peoples personal views, but as I said. Both of them said he was a poor drummer and that it was the way John and Paul wanted it? Strange I know

your logic is flawed. simply because you or i could play the drum parts ringo wrote doesn't mean we're as good of a drummer. imitation is easy. there are a million guys out there that can play hendrix spot on. but are they as innovative as he is? did they invent that sound or that style? no. i can drum led zeppelin. but i wouldn't for a second think i was as good as bonzo. he wrote those parts. being a creative musician is far far far different then repeating what someone else has done.

    go read ringo's wikipedia.
