just because a "song" has meaning for someone, doesn't mean everyone else has to like it. I also don't like Arc and don't think it's a song. I can't stand listening to it, but I respect the meaning it might have for Ed (or whoever), although I'm not going to fall all over it. I hear people talk about how Come Back has so much meaning for them...I simply cannot stand that song. I personally love Footsteps and it has meaning to me, but I am not going to bitch someone out for "not understanding the meaning" or throw them overboard because they disagree.
I think the original poster has the right to post that he thinks it sucks JUST as much as you people have to give your opinions against it. But don't go making him look like a bad guy or insensitive because he doesn't know why the non-song was written or what.
sometimes people can be so mean. maybe he just didn't know.
Just throwing this out to those people who feel that a negative opinion towards "Arc" is such an insult:
In the wake of 9/11, there were MANY, MANY, MANY songs that dealt directly with the attack. Honestly, 95% or more of them were terrible. Just because one respects the emotional input a writer has for their topic, doesn't mean they are obligated to like the song itself. There is nothing "negative" about not enjoying a song. It's a matter of taste, and to each his own.
EXAMPLE: That Alan Jackson song (I'm not sure of the title) where he asks "Where were you when the world stopped turning?"........ I think the guy put an honest and emotional effort in creaitng a tribute to those that passed away. The track was a huge hit, and I'm sure many people found it moving. Yet, I think the song is shit. Am I insensitive towards 9/11? Nope. Just think the song itself sucks.
Now, is "Arc" a song? Of course. Saying that an instrumental, or a chant makes it less of a song does show some limited appreciation of music. Music without lyrics is a pretty old concept, ya' know?
You have the right to hold the opinion that Arc sucks. But you don't have the right to hold the opinion that it is not a song, because that's not an opinion. That's a narrow-minded stupid as fuck thought process that has no reason to ever be verbalized or in this case typed out. Arc is a song. That's a fact.
I don't have the "RIGHT to hold that it is not a song" HAAAAA Thank you for letting me know how to think.
It's not a song. that is my opinion, take it or leave it. It isn't narrow-minded. I've given it thought. Perhaps you're so unreasonable that you can't even consider that I gave thought to my post. get over yourself and stop telling me what I'm allowed to have an opinion on.

No it's not your opinion. It's not an opinion based belief. Whether something is a song or not is not an opinion. You stating "it's not a song" cannot be an opinion. It's wrong. And thus you have no right to call it such. That's as flat out as I can say. Your "opinion" is wrong.
You trying to say that the song is not one shows you have a limited understanding about music.
You trying to provide a euphemism for your wrong statement as an opinion shows you have a limited understanding about words.

That is over the top and this is not the right place, all I said was go somewhere else, you asshole. And I'm sticking to it!
And YES, I know people say things to get your panties in a bunch, but my panties are just fine. I just like to stick up for what I believe in! As I said before I don't even care that pulaski didn't even know the meaning of the song. It just seems extrememly disrespectful to come onto the PJ message board and start calling songs TRASH, I have to correct that person and let them know where they are.
What I really don't understand, is when "you" don't like the song, why is it not even a song at that point-JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE IT? Who the hell are you, to get to decide if it IS a song or not. I can't even imagine thinking that highly of myself?
it is the most amazing song live. Saw and heard it in San Diego in 02 and the track on Riot Act is crap compared to the live version.

If he thinks it's trash, let him think that...i don't think it's disrespectful--he's not saying anything about the families of and those who died at Rothsklide.
see my last post about songs. Thinking highly of myself has nothing to do with my opinion of crappy music with annoying noise. that's not my idea of a song.

I guess that is the main reason why we disagree. I do find it disrespectful, not to the families. I don't think any of this has anything to do with the families.
Don't you think by calling PJ music crap on a PJ message board is just a tad disrespectful? There are so many other ways to get your opinion across.
hey, arc IS a song. it's as much a song as red dot and stupid mop.
It really isnt.
Those other songs have structure and instruments
arc is all hym and hum
stupidmop is striclty taped production
red dot is an instrumenta.
Why the fuck do you people arguE shit that is not right, its such a waste of time. Its not that I am smart or any kind aof a musiican, its that people like you try to enlighten us to your level of thinking, like you know something we dont.
The 1 thing that sucks with pearl jam is becasue of all this Ed passion peoples minds get whacked. They forget that it is just music, and rock concerts at the end of the day. Just becasue Ed has nice eyes and a deep voice doesnt mean baby girls need to go to shows, anymore than we need to change the structure of their band. they have songs, instrumentals, hyms, intros, outros, solos.
Every band does this stuff, its not like they were the first to sit down and have a chant or hym before an album.
I guess that is the main reason why we disagree. I do find it disrespectful, not to the families. I don't think any of this has anything to do with the families.

fair enough--i appreciate your good attitude, and that you're not being rude because we disagree.
I understand what you mean, but every single day there's about someone not liking something, whether it's getting shut out of tickets and telling the 10C to go F themselves (Personal insults to the band, 10c, etc, ) --I think that's way worse than saying a particular track on a CD is crap.
fair enough--i appreciate your good attitude, and that you're not being rude because we disagree.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have even been guilty, when my card was charged for tickets I didn't get. But I regreted it later and tried to make up for it. I guess I just take it personal when someone says their music is crap, even if I don't even like the song. Regardless, I appreciate your good attitude as well. And we can agree to disagree!
I'm not going to go onto Mr. Alan Jackson's fanclub website and start telling anyone who will listen that the song is shit. Why is this so hard to understand?
Well, here's my take: Not that it's worth your time, but if you check my history of posts, I'm a pretty positive guy. Don't really like when people bash something seemingly because they enjoy the shitstorm that will follow. That being said, I didn't think the original posts were out of line. I thought that the topic created some interesting debate, and just wanted to chime in.
I happen to think that most people are too thin skinned when it comes to artists they enjoy. I come to this board, as well as a few others, to see what other people think of the things I enjoy, and to pick up a little extra info. When I see a post that I feel is BS, I usually just move along to the next one and forget it. There a positives AND negatives when it comes to any band, and to think Pearl Jam is an exception to this is nonsensense.
Yes, if you went to Alan Jackson's site and your first post was a negative one, you most likely would get slammed by a bunch of over-sensitive wussies. I'm sure of it. But it wouldn't make your point any less valid.
I don't care for the "Post a Pic of Ed Where His Eyes Look Dreamy" threads, but if others want to share there opinions on something that has NOTHING to do with the music, I'm certainly not going to get offended by it either.
ive read all the comments, and what i take out of it is, that if Eddie made a 1 min moment of silence track on Riot Act instead of ARC, would you all feel just as moved and attached to that kind of song because it had "meaning"? even though the track is nothing but dead air (no pun intended).
What does that have to do with anything? He did NOT make a track of dead air. He made Arc. We are talking about Arc.
That would be like me saying to you: If Arc had lyrics would you consider it a song? It does't have lyrics so that question would be just as irrelevant as your question.
my point is, that most people defended it (whether its a song or not) because it has "meaning". Someone can place meaning on anything, so is it the meaning that makes it good? or is the appeasing to the ear?
if its meaning, then the moment of silence would be just as good, if its the sound itself, then i still say its crap and shoulda been cut.
