I'll go to them if a) I have a few things and b) I have little produce.0

And it doesn't necessarily make someone "lose their job". They'll just not hire an additional person as people leave. I don't think I've seen a checkout person at a register for longer than 2 years, and I go to the grocery store 4 or 5 days a week.ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you.

I like the self checkouts. Yeah the error things are annoying as hell, and no matter how hard I try to weigh fruit it never, EVER get's it right. 2 lbs always comes out to half a pound.
The nicest thing though is buying something that is just awkward to buy from a person, like condoms or something.Happiness is only real when shared0 -

Home Depot is my favorite place to use these little suckers so I can get in and out of the store without losing half of my day

good post!
and that's how it goes...with all things, in all industries.......things change.
i LOVE the self-checkouts, think they are awesome!!! only places we seem to have em in home depot and ikea...and i've used em in both places, no complaints! i just *always* make sure whatever items i am buying have a UPC/SKU bar code thingy on em, and good to go! we just recently were at home depot and i did accidently put my purse down on the bagging area and got a stern message, haha.....but otherwise, so quick and convenient! it's like the banks.....i faaaaaarrrrrrr prefer using an ATM as apposed to going into the bank waiting on the line and being served by a teller. love, love, love ATMs. and sure, one can look at the technology as taking away jobs, but as you mention....many other jobs get created in the interim.
oh, and to get to speak to a real live person when calling for service, 95% of the time you wait thru the first message and simply press "0" and you get a person - viola! at least that's how it works most of the time here.Stay with me...
Let's just breathe...

I like them, but I don't think they should allow cash transactions. The only people we should try to get even with...

I self-check at my supermarket .... you pick up a scanner as you go in that you can put on the trolley (cart for our American friends
) and then you just scan each item as you pick it off the shelf as you go around and then there is a pay point on the way out so no 'bagging errors' etc. Works really well
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?0 -
Has anyone ever "accidentally" not scanned one of their smaller items at the self check-out? Be honest. I "forgot" to scan a birthday card once."When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."0

I've entered in wrong produce codes before accidentally and rather than going back, clearing it out, then re-entering the right code...I just scanned my next item.

Does anyone like these things or think that they save time? The idea is perfect for someone like me (hates people, am technologically savvy, etc), but they frustrate the hell out of me and seem to take longer than dealing with a clerk.
Between the "item not placed in bagging area" error, and the delay when you select something, and it waits like 15 seconds to register your choice and you hit it again in the meantime screwing up everything, they are nothing but problems.
I don't mind doing the check-out myself, but I actually prefer a good, friendly checker to a sterile machine.&&&&&&&&&&&&&&0 -
My husband and I ALWAYS use the self checkout when a store has one. Every time we go to the grocery store or Wal-Mart, those seem to be the only places that have them. The lines are always shorter and it's just a lot faster for us. I'm so glad these are available now.
It is very annoying though when someone is in front of you with a ton of items or has no idea how to use it. I was in line behind a lady at the grocery store who decided to try it out for the first time on new years eve!! I know this because she announced it to everyone. The place was completely packed and she had a cart full and kept taking the bags off the scale. The attendant had to keep coming up and telling her not to remove her bags till she was done. She was still there when I left, it was ridiculous.0 -
I love using them, but I didn't at first, for all the reasons mentioned.
Now, I know what I'm suppose to do and try to make sure I do, then its better than dealing with clerks and there's usually no line. I don't like when I'm behind someone who doesn't know how to use them. When that happens, it seems every item has to be redone by an employee.
Its the weighing part that screws it up. If an item is even move off the scale and put back on, it makes you have to get help.Save room for dessert!0 -

Mine is at Waitrose but have seen it in a couple of other supermarkets too (not sure if it was Tescos or Sainsburys).
Was actually shopping today and a little girl was holding a scanner and having great fun doing the shopping as she got to scan everything fir her mum ... was cute to watchSo are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?0 -

Well I do most of my shopping in tescos and haven't seen them there (they have the proper self check out aisles)... so it must be sainsburys but I haven't noticed it there but I haven't been looking for them either  I much prefer sainsburys though so will have a look out next time I'm there... don't think there's a waitrose nearby. The Astoria??? All the bigger Tesco, Sainsbury, M&S and Waitrose I've been to have the self-scan thing.
If I had fresh fruit or vegies or bread rolls, I'd definitely swing round to the manned cashiers. Too much trouble figuring out the weighing and identifying the object and all that shit.115 bucks for half a haircut by a novice? I want my money back!0 -
I honestly find them annoying. They never work right and they take even longer to get you checked out. I've spent my 16 years going to grocery stores and getting checked out by actual humans - I see no need to change now. Thanks EPOTTSIII!

I go to store... shop for my items... ring them up myself... bag them myself.... maybe if they had carts half full of grocerys, I could stock the shelves myself and they wouldn't need a single employee...0

Ugh! I hate the self check registers! I gave it another try last week since I only had three simple items to buy. By 'simple' I mean, no produce - things with actual barcodes. Well, my 4 year old leaned on the bagging area and it just kept repeating "unexpected item in the bagging area. unexpected item in the bagging area. unexpected item in the bagging area." Holy Crap!
There have been times when I grab my items and walk away from it, over to a cashier, and just leave the self check out register short-circuiting...I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.0 -
I've only used them a couple of times, and for only 1 or 2 items. Never had a problem with them.
And I have a question for all the people we have had issues with them. Have any of you ever been a cashier at a big box store/grocery store?
Yeah its looks easy, but if you've never done it before it can be slightly.....awkward I guess is the best word I can come up with.0
