My husband and I ALWAYS use the self checkout when a store has one. Every time we go to the grocery store or Wal-Mart, those seem to be the only places that have them. The lines are always shorter and it's just a lot faster for us. I'm so glad these are available now.
It is very annoying though when someone is in front of you with a ton of items or has no idea how to use it. I was in line behind a lady at the grocery store who decided to try it out for the first time on new years eve!! I know this because she announced it to everyone. The place was completely packed and she had a cart full and kept taking the bags off the scale. The attendant had to keep coming up and telling her not to remove her bags till she was done. She was still there when I left, it was ridiculous.
I love using them, but I didn't at first, for all the reasons mentioned.
Now, I know what I'm suppose to do and try to make sure I do, then its better than dealing with clerks and there's usually no line. I don't like when I'm behind someone who doesn't know how to use them. When that happens, it seems every item has to be redone by an employee.
Its the weighing part that screws it up. If an item is even move off the scale and put back on, it makes you have to get help.
I self-check at my supermarket .... you pick up a scanner as you go in that you can put on the trolley (cart for our American friends ) and then you just scan each item as you pick it off the shelf as you go around and then there is a pay point on the way out so no 'bagging errors' etc. Works really well
that sounds cool what supermarket is that?

Mine is at Waitrose but have seen it in a couple of other supermarkets too (not sure if it was Tescos or Sainsburys).
Was actually shopping today and a little girl was holding a scanner and having great fun doing the shopping as she got to scan everything fir her mum ... was cute to watch
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

Lol, I hope she wasn't scanning things on the side
Well I do most of my shopping in tescos and haven't seen them there (they have the proper self check out aisles)... so it must be sainsburys but I haven't noticed it there but I haven't been looking for them either  I much prefer sainsburys though so will have a look out next time I'm there... don't think there's a waitrose nearby.

All the bigger Tesco, Sainsbury, M&S and Waitrose I've been to have the self-scan thing.
If I had fresh fruit or vegies or bread rolls, I'd definitely swing round to the manned cashiers. Too much trouble figuring out the weighing and identifying the object and all that shit.
115 bucks for half a haircut by a novice? I want my money back!
I honestly find them annoying. They never work right and they take even longer to get you checked out. I've spent my 16 years going to grocery stores and getting checked out by actual humans - I see no need to change now.
Thanks EPOTTSIII!

I go to store... shop for my items... ring them up myself... bag them myself.... maybe if they had carts half full of grocerys, I could stock the shelves myself and they wouldn't need a single employee...
Ugh! I hate the self check registers! I gave it another try last week since I only had three simple items to buy. By 'simple' I mean, no produce - things with actual barcodes. Well, my 4 year old leaned on the bagging area and it just kept repeating "unexpected item in the bagging area. unexpected item in the bagging area. unexpected item in the bagging area." Holy Crap!
There have been times when I grab my items and walk away from it, over to a cashier, and just leave the self check out register short-circuiting...

This bugs the crap outta me. I've no patience for people who can't use the bloody things. Just get out of my way and let me buy my stuff! There's always one prat, looking at the error message "Place item in bagging area", looking at the li'l cartoon of the item being placed in the bagging area, listening to the voice saying "Place item in bagging area" and they STILL stand there looking dumbfounded about why it won't work!
In my local Tesco, they have the small ones for baskets of things, and two or three bigger conveyor belt-types (the same that the cashiers would use) for the trolleys. They have the scanners attached to the trolleys or baskets in the Superquinns, but they're expensive so I don't shop there!

And I have a question for all the people we have had issues with them. Have any of you ever been a cashier at a big box store/grocery store?
Yeah its looks easy, but if you've never done it before it can be slightly.....awkward I guess is the best word I can come up with.
