Yeah, it's really sad how you have a guy like Manny holding out because $25 million isn't enough. Fuck that guy!
I actually kind of hope that professional sports take a HUGE hit because of the economic problems were in. People just stop going to games/events/etc. the owners will quickly have to rethink those contracts they are giving out. Sadly, you'll still get huge corporations buying out season tickets, and rick fucks fighting over the seats nearest home plate.

Looks like Stacy Andrews is just visiting Philly today....he'll still probably sign though.
More Andrews news out of Philly

We just received a note from the Eagles that unrestricted free-agent offensive tackle Stacy Andrews will "visit" the club today -- as first reported by PFT and then the Daily News. Andrews is scheduled to meet with reporters at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, which would lead one to believe that he'll be signing with the team. The logical thing to deduce is that Andrews will replace the injured (and unrestricted free agent) Jon Runyan at right tackle.1996: 9/28 Randalls Island, 9/29 Randalls Island

And more Bart Scott news:
Scott having change of heart?
Crazy stuff can happen on the first day of free agency. As we wrote earlier, Ravens linebacker Bart Scott has been on the verge of signing with the Jets most of the day, having agreed to terms. But agreed to terms is not signed, and sometimes that can make for a big difference.
According to a New York Daily News item this afternoon, Scott is making the Jets sweat out the contract agreement, having called Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome to give his old team a chance to match the Jets deal. Scott has been offered about $40 million over five years from New York, while the Ravens are said to have topped out at $37.5 million over five, but with $24 million in the first three years (for an average of $8 million over that span). The bizarre thing is that Scott, per the Daily News, is believed to be doing his last-minute negotiating with the Ravens from within the Jets facility, which if true, is kind of gutsy of him.
I just got off the phone with a Ravens official who had just come back from the Domonique Foxworth introductory news conference and wasn't buying the late Scott flip-flop story.1996: 9/28 Randalls Island, 9/29 Randalls Island

I can't believe the Chiefs got cassell and vrabel for just the 34th pick. Not even a 6th or 7th added to that? Insane.
Pioli is pretty good it seems and this comes from a Fins fan.
I live in Chicago and it is nuts that the Bears have not made one move. They desperately need a WR and no news on that front. Even if its not TJ they should be going after someone!
Worst Free Agency teams so far?
I'd say the Bears are up there.

Something tells me Belichick has something up his sleeve with this trade. This does seem like a shitty deal for the Pats but there has to be something waiting in the wings.....hopefullyHe who forgets will be destined to remember.

or maybe he knows Cassel is a terrible QB that padded his stats against the weak AFC East, AFC West, and NFC West in that sorry excuse for a schedule the Pats had to play against last year. He also knows that Cassel is gonna cost an assload to keep, so maybe a 2nd round pick is a steal in the grand scheme. I can't believe teams are so desperate and dumb to keep dealing with the Patriots and making them better year after year. The easiest way to have F-d the Pats was for no one to trade with them.0

If no team traded for Cassel, it only would have effected the Patriots for one year. They had franchised him and would have given him 14 or 15 mil or whatever it was. The next season they could have paid him whatever the Patriots wanted and that would have been more in line with a backup qb salary. That is because after next season the collective bargaining agreement ends and for the 2010 season there will be no salary cap and free agency reverts back to the old rules of having to be 6 years into the league. Next season would have been Cassel's 5th so the Patriots would have had control of his contract and Cassel couldn't file for free agency. This is why the Pats franchised him.
Of course trading him makes this all moot, but if they didn't trade Cassel, the Pats would only have been hurt for one season by Cassel's salary.
Plus considering Cassel was 7th round draft pick, getting a real high 2nd round pick for him is a pretty good return on investment.- Busted down the pretext

That's the whole point though why help the Pats by taking their crappy backup QB who went 11-5 versus the easiest schedule in the league with essentially the same team that went 16-0 against a far more difficult schedule the year before? It may have only hurt them for a year, and it may only hurt the Chiefs for a year, but it didn't seem to make much sense to me. You really think that the Chiefs can't find a QB that is as good as Matt Cassel over the next 2 years? For the Pats they dealt with this perfectly, give this dude a $14 mill contract then jump ship immediately and dump his sorry ass on a crappy team for a good pick (2nd round is traditionally the best value for the money) and get Tommy back. It does go to show that Bellytits and the Pats knows what they are doing...jerks.0

When I originally saw the Cassel deal, I was a bit puzzled, but, Pioli came from the Pats, so, I'm sure that between him and the Pat's mgmt, this is fair value. I hope he does well ... I'll pull a little more for the Chiefs this year.
Pick #34 from the Chiefs, so the Pats go into the draft with 4 of the first 55 picks.
Pats will have their first round pick, their second round pick and 2nd round picks of the Chiefs and Chargers .... time to get young on defense! They have 11 picks over all in the draft, almost two in every round. Draft weekend will be fun to watch as a Pats fan.
Freed up nearly $18M of cap space with this deal between Cassel and Vrabel (love Vrabel, but, he's not getting any younger) ... enough to offer some $$ to Wilfork and Mankins, lock them up for a long time.
Need to do a little shopping the the F/A market for deom defensive backs. Shawn Springs was in Foxborough today, hopefully we get soemone with a little more impact back there."You're one of the few Red Sox fans I don't mind." - Newch91
