I'll say another thing about Riot Act. It has to be the most divisive album this band has ever put out. Over 6 years later and not a week goes by where someone doesn't start a Riot Act thread on this board which is immediately followed up by praise, bashing, and then fighting amongst fans.

No Code my have shed the casual fans, but Riot Act divides the hard core fans right in two.

This really is a divisive topic, sheesh. I hated Riot Act until recently until I started to actually sit down and listen to it. Ghost and Get Right are pretty rocking songs and songs like I Am Mine and All or None make it an even more amazing album. Plus you cannot go wrong with any of the songs on there except Help, Help it is possibly the worst Pearl Jam song ever. Also while Arc is a great song, and has great meaning behind it, I think it would have been cooler as the hidden track after All or None, it would have been even more effective and spine tingling me thinks.
    32 shows and counting...

    pheewww...now i understand.

so your most favorite song isn't even by Pearl Jam?? mind if i ask who it is by??
I don't think i could pick just one song and say it's my favorite of all songs by all artists (i listen to so many different genres of music)

I agree... Jeff doesn't get enough love for his songs.

favorite song is kiss from a rose by seal, it's always been my favorite since it came out so... since i was like, 6 or 7? it reminds me of my dad, strangely, since they got divorced around that time i guess. it reminds me of how life was before they got divorced and it makes me happy for some reason (since my dad is, for lack of a better word, evil). it's also an awesome song :P it's the same reason why i love my second favorite song hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me by u2. so, GASP pearl jam is 3rd in my list of favorite songs :P. it used to be black (hence my sn) but now it's kinda changing to habit, i can't get enough, im addicted (haha). and i love sweet lew! i know people hate it but i think it's funny.

kiss from a rose is a nice song..obviously you have a connection with it that transcends the music itself...i'm sure your Dad isn't evil..life is fucked up and we can find ourselves doing some fucked up things..not that i'm pretending to know anything about your situation...i hate U2(old stuff is good new stuff..yukk)so i won't go there.

Riot Act = dull, lifeless, uninspired, complete with non-sensical lyrics. Eddie sounded tired and drained and like he wasn't even trying. Mike? You there? Save You and the solo in All or None are about it. 1/2 is OK I guess. Too many filler songs and spoken word nonsense. I don't like Bush either, but is Bushleaguer the best they could come up with? Have you read the lyrics? What the fuck? Same goes for Cropduster, Ghost and the awful Get Right. This album has two great songs (I Am Mine, All or None), three OK songs (Can't Keep, LBC and Save You), and a bunch of stuff I could care less about ever hearing again.

I think the lyrics are like verbal painting...they are not nonsense at all.
    "The answers are fatal..."

    "My lips are shakin'....

"And Love,...Wish the world would go again with Love
One can't seem to have enough."

I don't hate it as much as Fanch (nice avatar by the way), but I don't like much it at all. A lot of people don't like either Riot Act or 8, but I consider the Avocado to be a complete 180 from Riot Act. So much more energy and Eddie acts like he give a damn. Great story telling and more Mike is always a good thing.

I think they know it too because they even mentioned wanting to put out a better effort than Riot Act and how many Riot Act songs get played on tour now?

However, that is just my personal view and I will not bash anyone who loves it. That is what makes us all PJ fans. I love Avocado. Think it is in their top 3. Others hate it. To each their own.

It really baffles my mind that alot of peopled liked "pearl jam" more than Riot act... riot act was such a solid fn album... everything great pearl jam records are made of amazing intro - check , experimental tune - check , no bullshit - check , amazing outro song- check, great tone set - check and the best part
    no poppy tunes- check ;)
  • I've been listening to "Riot Act" like a madman the past three months. It gets better with time. If only two or three songs weren't on it, it'd be another "A" effort.
  • I could do without the "tell me lies" part in Help Help. And Thumbing My Way is boring. Otherwise one of my favorite discs!

That's because Riot Act is much more complicated than Avocado. It takes a while to understand that record and once you "get" it, you'll get addicted to it :D

love can't keep, save you, ghost. on good days i can add i am mine, LBC to that list. other than that... the rest of the album is trash. filler topped with filler.

Riot Act is pure genius and I refuse to dumb it down for some bonehead mass audience.

ok that's a Seinfeld quote but I really love Riot Act. It's artsy. I struggle to identify any song on that album as "filler." Can't Keep might be their best song ever. Save You has raw angst. LBC " And the young, they can lose hope cause they cant see beyond today, the wisdom that the old cant give away..." enough said. Cropduster, one of my personal favorites, what a beautiful tale of life and death, AMAZING LYRICS! Ghost, just a cool song. Im still am baffled by the line " I never knew soap made you taller." ???? I am mine=words to live by. Thumbing is a heart wrenching story of love lost, it makes me cry every time. You R, it's a risk, and only good bands take risk. Get Right, I wish I was getting right, right now ;) G.D. great riff, great lyrics, I just hope Ed sticks to the theme... Help Help, I think this was my favorite live song off the album, weird and cool. Bushleauger, the chorus of this song is hot. 1/2 full my least favorite, but still a great anthem of adventure. Arc, only eddie could pull this off. All or None, what a gut wrenching, amazing song. Stone's guitar riff combined with Mike's solo and Ed's words, damn.

this is a very non-epic album for pearl jam and people seem to hate it for that. it's simple, yet very deep. i think it's amazing, it ranks third for me behind yield and binaural.
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...

I've been listening to this album a lot lately...amazing peice of work! It took me sometime to come to this conclusion...but now I see the light.

great review except for the part about 1/2 full being a least favorite anything! that song is amazing! and if we're going to talk gut-wrenching, how about that plea at the end, "won't someone save the world?" that line just pulls at my heartstrings every time i hear it.

but yes the album is awesome, no fillers anywhere ;) and it's even more amazing on vinyl, arc and all or none especially.

Now when I say 1/2 full is my least fav on the album that doesn't mean I dislike it. In fact Im a big fan. It takes me back to certain trip I took right after finishing undergrad. A couple other thoughts on Riot Act: A. I think the Riot Act tour was pj's best ever. B. Do any of you Riot Act fans and lyric junkies have any insight into the line "I never knew soap made you taller." ? I always thought it meant that being clean put you at another level... But then I saw the movie MILK, and although there is an obvious timing discrepancy (MILK out this winter RA 2002) there was a scene that grabbed me attention right away. In the scene Sean Penn is going to address the public for the first time via a megaphone outside his shop. He has a hard time getting people's attention but then his friend grabs him a huge box to stand on. He jumps on top of it and everyone starts to gather and pay attention to him. The box read, in big, bold letters, "SOAP." Just a thought...

Nice to see Riot Act getting some love! The 2 PJ albums I listen to the most from beginning to end are Riot Act and Binaural. I can't get enough of them!! And, as far as the vinyl goes, there's just something magical about those opening guitar riffs on Save You!!
