  • Give the guy a break, he had his hands full, 1/2 a beer in one, a briefcase in the other.
Besides, it must suck people wanting something from you ALL the time. You cant always oblige.

I don't know how he does it. People are bloodsuckers. The guy that said "we love you here"-- what was he doing, trying to throw in the guilt?
Why do people want Eddie's name on a piece of paper? What does that mean?
And how do you keep those people at bay? My two children drain me -- can you imagine that mob scene all your life?
I guess that's why I'm not famous. I think I would whip people around like Sean Penn.

  • I met Ed on the same tour in DC. He didn't give autographs, but took the time to shake everyone's hand. He was real cool actually--when he was shaking your hand he looked you in the eye (albeit through sunglasses). You felt like you had a little moment with him. He even took a request to play Parting Ways. Good dude--definitely not a dick.
  • I am a long time PJ fan and I've always read good things about Ed and fans.
For the guy who called him a "dick", read the first two pages of the last Deep Magazine.

I don't think Ed was being a dick either... He's got a life to live.

I remember meeting Ed after the Pete Townsend show at The Supper Club. People were surrounding him for autographs, about 10 people outside the hotel or something. I think he was drawing pictures instead of a signature. I had just wanted to give him a framed picture I took a few years earlier:

Asked Ed if he'd like to have it. He, while bombarded with autograph seekers, said something like "sure... thanks..." but was too busy to converse with me, so I handed it to (I think it was) Smitty who was with him and I went on with my evening. No big deal. I just didn't want to be part of the obstacle of people wanting things from him.

I know what PJ did in deep magazine, I was at that show. I also know that there is literally no band on earth that cares for their fans as much as PJ. I just think Ed was a bit of a dick. It was just a small group of fans that wanted stuff signed. Ed even signed some autographs for some bullshit autograph company for one of his west coast solo shows. They were basically rude business men bullshitting with Ed and you could tell he didn't want their shit, thats understandable. theyre just a bullshit company that sells autographs for money.

  • i wouldn't call ed a dick about not wanting to sign something. he has to sign autographs all the damn time, he has to be polite all the time during each signing so the fan doesn't get upset and have a bad experience, fans demand a lot of him, and if he has an off day no one can let him be grouchy. i get it. his girlfriend was pregnant last year, what if there were complications or something? what if god forbid something was happening to him or his family and he didn't feel like putting on a face for his hundreds of fans and decided to just avoid them? what if he just wasn't feeling well? what if he just didn't want to put up with us? we can be a bunch of freaks when it comes to pj and he knows it. if one day or whatever he didn't want to deal with us, so what? it must be exhausting to live his life sometimes.

btw, my avatar is of him when he gave all of us picks before his 8/5/08 show in ny.

  • I didn't ask for one, but in Boston, he gave every single person an autograph that wanted one. There were a lot of guys there with multiple items and kept bugging him to sign more. He probably gets tired of it.

I'm not an autograph fan at all. It just seems like a waste of time when you only have such a small block of time with someone. It really wouldn't mean much to me to own a piece of paper Eddie wrote on. Taking 30 seconds to say something nice or have a short exchange would be so much more significant to both sides.

I agree. When I met him in DC all I said was "it is really nice to meet you" and shook his hand. And for whatever reason (maybe cos I am like a foot taller than him or maybe because I was sincere and not asking him for anything extra), he just kind of bounced back for a second, looked me straight in the eyes, smiled, and said Nice to meet you, too. After that I just kept thinking about that line, Take my hand not my picture and how he really meant that then and still seems to now.
  • there is a HUGE difference between autograph collectors and fans... this site is full of people who get the autographs and turn around and sell it on ebay. Now I know alot of fans where there in that video, but still Ed had a pretty intense and intimate tour he was on, I dont think he should be judged for not signing a few autographs. He is only human and at the end of any work day you just want to go home and not be bothered.

There had been so many positive stories about Eddie Vedder greeting fans and signing for the hounds during his many stops in Toronto touring with Pearl Jam over the years. But something about 2008 was different. Vedder made a two-night solo stop at Toronto’s Massey Hall during August and gave the autograph collectors fits. He just wasn’t into giving any autographs on this trip. Eddie’s personal security did a good job keeping everybody far away. They even took Vedder out a rarely used back door at Massey Hall as opposed to the regular, much more fan-friendly, stage door most performers use.

    Mama mia!

    Demetrios,

based on what i was told by Jesse, eV's "security sniper", the signed poster that i received from eV when i met up with him just prior to the 1st Massey Hall show that i passed onto you for the Wishlist pre-party auction was the ONLY thing eV signed in or around the venue excluding anything that was signed for friends/guests backstage. given the fact security couldn't contain the crowds gathered around eV's tour bus behind the venue before and after each of the concerts, eV and his men (security and tour manager) simply didn't want a mob scene,...

This is my personal opinion... consider the fucking source. These guys posting their 'ratings' are the fucks that 'collect autographs' and usually turn around and sell them on EBay or shops where tourists frequent. I mean, seriously... do you want a fucking Jonas Brother autograph?!?!? Who does? Other than 9 year old girls.
And I can see Eddie bailing out on all of that fan stuff. The times I've met him, he's been real cordial about having people line up and get one thing signed... when there wasn't a bunch of people, including the bunch from TMZ blinding him with fucking strobe lights. Like outside the Wiltern... what part of 'No Flash pictures, please" don't these fucking morons understand? No wonder he said, "Fuck this shit" and went straight on to the bus.
And yeah... I got an autograph outside the All Tomorrow's Parties... and a tamborine signed outside Hulabaloo, but the other times, i just wanted to say, "Hey... nice to see you...". All of those times, it was just a handful of fans with some EBay autograph stalkerazzi in the mix and Ed was real nice about it... and was only a 'dick' to the dick that tried to get more than one guitar pick.
Finally, to those who think autographs are lame.. that's your gig. I happen to like mine... i think they look real bitchen up on the wall. These are people I admire for their artistic talents... and they are just nice people, in spite of their celebrity. And meeting them allows me to just let them know how I feel about their art and how it has made my miserable, mundane life much easier to tolerate.
