  They aren't compatible.
  
  If you buy the Wii version you will only be able to play with other Wii owners and vice versa.
  
  As far as gameplay differences, if you are talking PS2 I don't think there is many differences.
  
  But PS3 and 360 have additional DLC, I believe 360 has another character "God of Rock", while Wii has a character called "Metalhead".
  
  I'm assuming you are talking about GH3

  You can download something called "Frets on Fire" or so I hear. It doesn't have a guitar though, I don't think. I think it's just a freeware rip-off of guitar hero.

  guitar hero 3 is coming out for macs next month. you could buy a used ps2, which gives you the ability to play gh, gh 2, gh rocks the 80s and gh 3.

  guitar hero 3 is whats coming out for macs. i doubt they will release the original games on that platform. used ps2s go for $90, $130 for new ones.

  I was showing the game to my 78 year old aunt (she is getting it for her great grandchild), she laughed at me and said all you are showing me is that you cant play that yellow button and they booing you off stage.

  if it's just for guitar hero, the ps2 has the most guitar hero games available. only guitar hero 2 and 3 are available for the xbox 360 and ps3. there are 4 gh games out for the ps2.

  The game is so basic, you can run it on a Pentium I.
  
  I'd say not XBox unless you like replacing it every few months. PS3 if you like paying $1000 to play a game.
  
  EDIT: You can't really run it on a Pentium I, but there is nothing special about the game that requires certain hardware.

  which guitar hero game are you starting with? are you getting one of the wireless guitars? i need to do that...i have the first corded guitar that came out. it works with all of the games, but i hear the fret buttons are spaced better and have a better feel than the wired ones. supposedly, you don't have to mash the frets like you do with the wired guitars.

  ok...so you bought guitar hero 3 with the guitar? it comes with the black wireless one, right? you can use a wireless guitar with all 4 of the games, but when i started playing, they hadn't come out with wireless ones yet; i still use the wired one. let me know how you like the guitar that came with 3.
