    Solid 2 way player who could do everything. He will be missed. Hopefully we keep Dowd at a low number and surround him with some younger players on that 4th line.
    Doesn't Jim Dowd return to the grave in the off-season? Rising again each October?

    I think Upshall fits that roll now pretty nicely or maybe give Thoresen a full time shot

    I think Upshall is more of a 2nd or 3rd liner who can play in most situations but I don't see him as a PK player. I like Thoresen, even though he had no goals, he had alot of chances and created for other players. It's always nice having versatile players like Kappy on your team though.

    I was thinking the more I watched Thoresen the more he reminded of Podein

    Not just because of the Number 25 either

    PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Flyers winger Sami Kapanen is retiring after 12 NHL seasons.

    The 34-year-old had eight points in 74 regular-season games for the Flyers.

    Kapanen was selected by the Hartford Whalers in the fourth round of the 1995 NHL entry draft.

    Over 12 seasons with the Flyers, Whalers and Carolina Hurricanes, Kapanen had 458 points (189-269) and 175 penalty minutes.

    He posted 35 points (13-22) and 22 penalty minutes in 87 career playoff games.

    Kapanen played for Finland at the Olympics in 1994, 1998 and 2002.

    The Flyers added depth to their blue line, acquiring defenseman Danny Syvret from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Ryan Potulny.
    Syvret, 22, had two goals and 18 assists with 43 penalty minutes in 63 regular-season games for Springfield and Hershey Bears, of the American Hockey League, this season.

    "Danny is a puck-moving defenseman that sees the ice well and will improve our depth," general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement. "He had some success playing with Jeff Carter and Mike Richards at the 2005 World Junior Championship as a member of the Team Canada.

    "Ryan was a good player for our organization, but this was a deal based on a need, as we added depth to our defense."

    Syvret has appeared in 26 regular-season NHL games in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, with an assist and 12 penalty minutes.

    Potulny, 23, played in seven games for the Flyers this past season, but spent most of his time with the Phantoms. He had 21 goals and 26 assists with 51 penalty minutes in 58 regular-season games in the AHL.

    Over the last three seasons, Potulny has registered 14 points and 26 penalty minutes in 44 regular-season games for the Flyers.

    That should be the primary home. Always liked the Flyers when their jersey was orange... I like the white name plate too! Nice. Where'd you find that or did you make it? What other teams are adding thirds? My team never does that...too bad.

    I like that jersey.... and most teams are going to have a 3rd jersey next year so hopefully this is the Flyers.... but I do agree that it should be their home jersey and make the black ones the alternate jersey.

    Free-agent update. The Flyers are negotiating with potential restricted free agents Jeff Carter, R.J. Umberger and Randy Jones. Holmgren said he was hopeful of signing them but was not especially close.

    He was close to signing Riley Cote, another potential free agent on July 1.

    In addition to signing the Big Three, one of Holmgren's off-season goals is to add a defenseman. Brian Campbell, John-Michael Liles, Mark Streit and Mike Commodore are among potential free agents who could fit the bill.

    Bolstering the roster and staying within the salary cap, which is expected to reach $55 million, will be tricky, but Holmgren seemed confident.

    Also, Hatcher is better than 50-50 on returning next season, but nothing concrete yet.

    Streit is probably going to be seeing a pay increase this year.
