    My husband's cousin did. She didn't take anything or get shots, either. She moved in with a guy that had a cat, and eventually she just got over it.

    Also, my cousin beat it with allergy shots.

    interesting.

    I want to get a cat, but I don't want to get one and then have to give it away. it's just a toss up whether shots and whatnot will work. my allergies are really bad.

    I have mild seasonal allergies and it seems like cats should bother me but they don't. Then again, I have three of the wild beasts and after the 1,000th time of waking up to find one sleeping on your face, I guess you build an immunity.

    So are my husband's. I'd love to get a cat, but I would hate to get attached to one and then find out that the shots or whatever didn't work. My mom has a cat, and he has actually gotten hives at her house.

    my friend's mum got the shots when their outdoor cat became an indoor cat and then developed really bad asthma as a result of the shots!

    I just really want a pet and can't have a dog!

    You can get used to cats for sure, but I think each one has different dander... I have gotten used to a few cats being around them enough, but the other ones still really fuck with my nose, eyes, and even skin(get hives)

    I kind of want a dog, now that we have a yard and everything...but I worry that taking the dog out and picking up it's poop would get really old, and that's partly why I'd still prefer a cat. If you could litter train a dog, I'd get one today.

    apparently, there are little dogs you can litter train! that seems a little wrong to me, but hell, some people like it!

    I can't take of a dog and I have no yard, I don't think one would be happy with me. that's why I want a cat, a cat would be perfect. but the allergies...ah, they just seem to get worse with every cat I encounter.

    Long term exposure does seem to help...in the beginning, always, always wash your hands after touching the cat and prior to touching any part of your face or eating. Take it slow.

    I agree. I'm allergic to my mom's cats but I'm fine with my own. They bother my eyes a little bit, but I can deal.

    Been getting allergy shots for years and they DEFINITELY help all of my allergies, including cat allergies.

    please don't get a pet if there is a chance you can't take care of it due to allergies or any reason. Shelters are over crowded because of animals having to be surrendered because their owners are allergic. (I know this is only one reason and there are many more)

    I know you want a pet, but its selfish to get one just to fill a need you have if you might not be able to care for it. Think of the heartbreak a pet goes through if it gets comfortable in your house and then has to be brought to a shelter. Most animals that are surrendered from their owners to a shelter that does not have a no kill policy are put down.

    Maybe you could help out at your local shelter by walking dogs and playing with them to get your dog fix. Or spend time working with the cats there. You will see how your allergies act and be doing a great service to the homeless pet community in the mean time.

    I've been allergic to cats my whole life. For some ungodly reason, my husband and I got 2 cats. The allergies kicked in, ended up I was also allergic to everything that blooms here in AZ too. So, I got shots for about 2 years. Hated it. Also been on Allegra, pretty much everyday. However, I do not get shots anymore, haven't for years, but I still take allegra everyday, no side effects as far as I can tell and live happily with my furry little friends!!

    Funny to hear you mention AZ allergies. That's one place they recommend people with allergies move to. I go to Scottsdale every year in March/April, and by FAR, I mean no contest (worse than me in full-bloom Ragweed season which is atrocious), the worst allergies I have ever had are in AZ. 6-7 years ago there were times during my vaca that I would have to fall asleep with a wet washcloth over my eyes. I mean it was vicious.

    The good news is that even though I get allergy shots for northeast allergies, they REALLY help my AZ allergies.

    AZ after a wet winter is pretty much hell. I just go for the golf and food. Grayhawk and Blue Wasabi, or Troon North and Mastro's Ocean Club = life is good.

    Yes, so I moved here from NYC in 2000, never had allergies other than cat. Then boom, dreadful! But like I said, as long as I keep up with the Allegra, I'm good.

    Wet winter, yes, allergies are bad now. We live in N. Scottsdale, about a mile from the Ocean Club. Love this area, but still, miss the NE. Mostly the people.

    I was horribly allergic to cats as a kid.........i mean my eyes would swell shut, my throat would swell, it was horrible. As I got older, it mellowed out.
    When I was 35 (3 years ago) I got a cat, a short haired cat, for my kids and I did fine.
    I have been on Zyrtec forever tho..........i'm sure that helped.

    In her teens, my wife was diagnosed as being allergic to cats. We have four cats now. She's developed a resistance.
