well this is exactly why I am VERY reluctant to try any cat. my friend gave a dog back because she was allergic (whether this is the true reason is questionable) and I thought it was A TERRIBLE thing to do. I did have a friend in north carolina who was a cat foster parent though- have you heard of this? she took the cat for a while until they could find a permanent home. it was an interesting program.
as for the devon rex and sphinx, I've read that people can actually be MORE allergic to them! I've heard that there are enormous numbers of them in shelters because people think they won't be allergic and they are! (plus they're kinda creepy lookin imo )
I have heard of the foster program. I just started volunteering at this amazing shelter. It has all open air rooms instead of cages. They are a no kill shelter and they are working on making Chicago a no kill city. (if anyone wants more info or is looking to adopt in Chicago, please contact me!!!) and anyways they have a foster program there. The fosters normally stay 2-3 weeks with their foster home, atleast with my shelter. You might want to look into that! My shelter is very flexible and can take them back if there is a problem. (and your local shelter may too)
They also have all of their adoptions as foster to adopt. They have a 2 week period where if things aren't right they take the animal back no questions asked and the animal will NOT be put down. I hope you find something that works for you!
