He Who Smelt It Dealt It: (Colloquial) The irrefutable rule of fart detection. When one smells gas and accuses a bystander, the bystander argues that the person who noticed is responsible. Might be a good time to get this one in the open.
I read a book by Bill Bryson recently, he's an American (if you didn't know) but lives in Britain, and he was making the point about the differences in sense of humour between us as nations. He reckond the main thing is that America doesn't have a version or understanding of 'taking the piss' (which for the instance of this thread is my favourite saying)
So...'taking the piss'. Any Americans have an understanding of what that means ?...just wondering.I came, I saw, I concurred.....0 -

I don't think they do from past conversations? Or maybe it was just this one guy.
*Yeah... that's an embarrassing thing to admit.
My favourites are 'Well, slap my ass and call me Judy' (don't know why) and 'Since god was a lad'.0 -

I don't really know what it means. I thought it meant to give someone a hard time...just ribbinig someone. But I'm not sure. Explain.0 -

It can be playful or mean, but yes, giving someone a hard time is easy to describe I guess.
The example Bryson uses is in a train station he asks for a ticket with a reciept and the guy says.."there you go sir, the ticket is free,... but it's £15.50 for the reciept". Bryson claims that in the US the ticket guy would have been exclaimed by a cry of "what the hell sort of cockamamy system gives a free ticket and charges for the reciept?"
I don't know if that's entirely the case, but for sure in our country people are pleasantly amused at times when someone 'takes the piss' out of them.
It is noticable on this pit at times, the difference in sense of humour across the AtlanticI came, I saw, I concurred.....0 -
Most of mine are insults, are they allowed? "Go fist yourself" is a charming recent addition0

I think we in America would call that sort of thing "Giving someone shit."
That being said, most Americans don't use the word cockamamy.San Diego 10/25/00, Mountain View 6/1/03, Santa Barbara 10/28/03, Northwest School 3/18/05, San Diego 7/7/06, Los Angeles 7/9/06, 7/10/06, Honolulu (U2) 12/9/06, Santa Barbara (EV) 4/10/08, Los Angeles (EV) 4/12/08, Hartford 6/27/08, Mansfield 6/28/08, VH1 Rock Honors The Who 7/12/08, Seattle 9/21/09, Universal City 9/30/09, 10/1/09, 10/6/09, 10/7/09, San Diego 10/9/09, Los Angeles (EV) 7/8/11, Santa Barbara (EV) 7/9/11, Chicago 7/19/13, San Diego 11/21/13, Los Angeles 11/23/13, 11/24/13, Oakland 11/26/13, Chicago 8/22/16, Missoula 8/13/18, Boston 9/2/18, Los Angeles 2/25/22 (EV), San Diego 5/3/22, Los Angeles 5/6/22, 5/7/22, Imola 6/25/22, Los Angeles 5/21/24, [London 6/29/24], [Boston 9/15/24]0 -

Yea. I've fallen into the habit of calling people cancerous cunts.0 -
If someone asks you a question where the obvious answer is yes, like 'do you want another pint', a common response will be "Do bears shit in the woods?" or "Is the Pope Catholic", or if you're really drunk and can't remember it "Do nuns shit in the woods?"...0

That being said, most Americans don't use the word cockamamy.yeah, I kinda got that he was being playful with his expression :)I think he was expressing his love of our subtle, playful, sometimes biting wit....it can be hard for other nationalities to grasp....cockamamy is a great word though
I had a mate from Germany here for a while, he would sit in the pub with me after football and be aghast at all these fellas telling each other to " go fu** yourself...", "yeah, that's what your wife says to me..." etc, etc... he was truly waiting for a fight to break out, when it was just what we call lads being lads...taking the piss, if you likeI came, I saw, I concurred.....0 -
