so everyday i need to take the george washington bridge to and from work. the on ramp in washington heights always has a few homeless people standing in traffic begging for money.

coming home today, there is a black lady driving in front of me, she passed a white homeless man first and gave him nothing, then came up to a black homeless man.... she rolls down her window and gives him money.

what gives??????????????????

Maybe she thought the white guy was George Washington and seeing as how he already had his own bridge...

Perhaps if the whiteman gave the blackman a fair shake in the past, the divide would not exist today.

if you think this is racism, then I say it is questionable whether or not your assumption on her racisim is actually racism on your part. Think about it. I think in both cases racism has nothing to do with it.

So,for example if the two of them were white, you would get angry cause one was from argentina and the other from Ireland, or vice versa?

you know, i thought about that, but i don't think it was racism on my part, because she had blatant disregard for one and not the other. why did she make her decision? if she is someone that likes to give to homeless, then why not both??

maybe the black guy looked less threatening to her? or reminded her of someone she knew?

    didn't you just say that?
  • there are many qualifiers to racism, but I am not sure this is strictly speaking the right term for what you witnessed. perhaps a question should also be raised as to why you noticed a black woman gave to a black man and not the white one?

would you be decrying racism if a white woman gave to the white man over the black?

perhaps she was instinctively trying to offset what she may feel is a lifetime of institutionalized racism...that is, maybe she assumed that the white man would be given money by many other people who have been trained to feel that a black man is the most threatening version of "man"

or maybe she felt bad about the white guy, but was too late with her change purse for him, and the black dude was just in time.

it is a little impractical to say she should give to both...technically she doesn't HAVE to give to either...and charity is not something that "should" be "shoulded" over.

Maybe after she passed the first person she felt guilty and stopped at the next homeless person, who happened to be black.

it was an observation made in stand still traffic. hard to not notice when the homeless are within arms reach of your driver side window, and the lady i am talking about is the car directly in front of you.

and i would def. raise a brow if i saw a white woman to give her money to the white homeless man over the black.

and yeah, it's possible she was too late with getting money out of her purse. but again, they are there, there is heavy traffic, you see them, they are literally on top of your car. if you are willing to give, you certainitly have enough time to grab a buck out of your wallet. the traffic is not going anywhere.

I see how easy it would be for her to have given to both - but that doesn't exclude the idea that charity is freely given. It is unfortunate that she decided to give to one and not both, but you still didn't mention WHY the color of their skins struck you...I had not questioned the proximity that would have allowed for your noticing the skin color...I am not trying to be confrontational - I am just curious as to that being the first/main qualifier towards placing "racism" on her charitable action.

at any rate - I am a non-white female, and I often give charitably on the street level, I wonder if I ever (even subconsciously) allow race/familiarity to play a role in whom I give spare change to...my instinct tells me that I prolly give more money to men, and to men that remind me of someone...

it is an interesting concept...I will have to try to become more aware of my reasonings...

This is probably not racism, but just a matter of preference. People 'prefer' some charities over others, I give a monthly donation, comes out of the bank each month, and I had to decide which one I prefer to give my money to.

It wouldnt bother me in the slightest if a black woman gave money to a black man over a white man, or visa versa.

I think the fact that she gave anything at all is a nice gesture.

and i don't mean to come on here screaming racism. the title of this thread should have had a question mark at the end of it, because i don't even know if i witnessed anything racist. and if it was, i am certainitly not going to come on here complaining about it. i just simply witnessed something that i feel was a little curious, and i just wanted other's opinions on it.

and the color of the skin struck me because of what i saw of course. i saw the car slowly inch past one, then slowly inching towards the second, the window comes down.

but hey, in the long run she was being charitable and hopefully whatever she gave him goes to good use.
