Will blu-ray win already?!

I've had an HD TV for 2 years now, and I really want to start watching my movies in HD. I'm not a fanboy of either format (I once sided with HD and still would.) but it looks like blu-ray is getting more support now.. and just when you think HD DVD is going to die, their response is spending 3 million on superbowl advertisement!

I need convincing. I have the money set aside. I'm not going to buy both or spend the money on a duel player. Do I buy the blu-ray player tonight, or is it still to early?

I'd go with blue-ray. There are only a couple of studios left supporting hd-dvd eveyone else has jumped ship to blue ray. Blue-ray sales are about 2:1 to hd-dvd at the min as well i believe.

But they haven't won. Thats the problem. Beleive me, I've been researching online everywhere. They might be outselling HD DVD 2 to 1 and have more studio support, but only a very small percentage of people are buying high definition players.. When the masses start catching on, all could change over night.

This is probably because the HD and Blu-Ray players are not cheap.. You can go get a $30 DVD player with HD upconversion and there isn't a HUGE visible difference on most TVs.

I would have been the first to agree with you a month ago. However, the tide has shifted. I work for a big box retailer and we cannot keep Sony or Samsung Blu-Ray players in stock. Or Playstation 3's for that matter. The Toshiba A-3 and A-30's that have their prices massively cut sit on the shelf. With the purchase of an HDTV you can get a HD-DVD player as low as $50.00 and they are still opting for the Blu-Ray. The public is starting to speak, and it is asking for Blu.

Also, did you see the disc sales the last few weeks? Two weeks ago some figures had Blu-Ray as high as 90%! Far over the previous 2-1 advantage.

    Single format please!

I don't know about a good one for $30, but I agree with you. Blu Ray is nice, but for now, it is too expensive and even if it has beaten HD-DVD, that doesn't mean it will over take regular DVD.

Granted the word "good" probably doesn't apply to this, but if you're willing to buy another $35 every 6 or so months than this one is fine :D

yup 80% of the studios supporting blu-ray would suddenly switch if masses bought into HD, hd has always had the hardware advantage :)

Last I heard was that since last Oct or Nov the numbers were about 9:1.

It may not be "over", but it's over!

I would just wait a while longer... it's not really that big of a deal anyways. You could always get a cheap upconvert dvd player for now.

Just buy a PS3, or wait for the new one coming soon. That way you can play games while you wait for the war to be over :). When it is, you will be ready.

Yeah, the PS3's firmware upgrades are very nice!
Video games, very nice looking movies, all kinds of good stuff.

It really has become my central entertainment "box".
  • I just got a bluray player for buying a Sharp 42 inch tv, a $500 value. I didn't care much about the battle between the two formats before, but when I saw this deal, and I was already shopping for a TV, it was a no brainer.

Well working in retail payed off today.. My boss sold me an open item 40" 1080p Sony for $700. The original price was $1899. It was on clearance for $1399 and because they are trying to get rid of open items I got 50% off the clearance price! (hell my normal employee cost on it was $1330).. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. I'm not sure why they returned it... Can't go wrong saving $1200 on a TV.

Now it's time to pick up a PS3!

    :D
