Who's read it? I'm halfway through and can't wait til I'm finished to start a thread about it. What a fucking amazing and inspirational story... one of those rare books that makes you glad to be alive and appreciate all that's around you. I'm in love with a book

It makes you enjoy every second of freedom and know that no matter what 'they' do to you... you can always beat them

That's the one... well the movie was of the book that I'm reading. You should know, you're French

he was French... apparently it's like a French classic or something. I'd definitely recommend it though, fantastic uplifting read!

Never read it. In fact, the first French book I ever read, comic books excepted, was an English translation of Madame Bovary.

I saw the movie a very long time ago. All I remember is the nightmare McQueen had, where Dustin Hoffman mumbled to him, "You're dead..." Must have been before the escape.

It's a true story of a man who was sent by France to French Guyana for life internment cos he was wrongly convicted of manslaughter. He escaped 9 times

but never gave up.

I never saw the film but I love Steve McQueen... and reading the book, he's perfect for the part.

Not me... but I'll take the credit lol. I did have a thread called 'adventure books' where somebody mentioned this one.

we can discuss it when we're done then... how long do you reckon?

I read it a long time ago, and then again just recently. Its a great book, a total page turner.

I loved it so much I made the mistake of googling it to find out more and, well I don't want to diminish the book, but lets just say some claim there is a litte James Fry in there.

But as a book, I couldn't get enough of it. Actually liked it better than the movie.

I suspected as much, a few reasons which I'm putting to the back of my mind til I'm done reading cos I just love where this book takes me

I read it probably around 5 years ago in french.

yeah i read it way back, recieved the dvd last xmas as a gift (it's not black and white, from70's) and it brought back memories.
Some of his decision making was a little iffy, found it frustrating every time he was recaptured! It is supposedly a true story and it's not as if I'd of made a better job of escaping Devils Island and evading all mortal peril but still......

My favourite part was where he settles down with the natives, gets himself a girl, got it all going good and then???? he fucks it all up!!!! I'd of stayed put me, settled down there.................little was devoted to this in the fil-em (some tit and aboriginal desire and stuff)_...........maybe, probably, you haven't reached this stage yet, don't worry- it's not of striking significance to the plot or at least ain't nothing serious but maybe leads into something serious
