Ok, so I'm heading out to Boston on Saturday for a week to see my cousin that's been wanting me to come there forever. Never been there, or even the East Coast for that matter. But anyway, its finally gonna happen. She actually lives on the Cape so will be there too. Figured Id try and get some suggestions as to things, places, bars, etc that I should definitely try and see/go to, while I'm there. Hittin' up a Red Sox game one day, but what else? Figure you guys would have plenty of ideas, so any and all would be mucho appreciated....

  • Lots of fun bars near Faneuil Hall. Some are touristy, but others are local. I like the Purple Shamrock. They usually have a descent cover band on weekends. Next door to that it the Tap, also a good dive bar.

Don't miss going to Cambridge. It's really pretty and lots of cool shops.

If you're going to see the (dirty, filthy, asshole) Sox, skip the Cask & Flaggon and go to the mexican place further down Lansdowne St. More space, less crowded and better drinks.

Cool, thanks for the info. Takin' it all down. Yeah, not going for the Sox, but cuz I'm a sports fan, and really wanna see that park. Be rockin' my Halos hat though :D

Again, thanks for the response.....SO lookin' forward to this trip!
  • Radiohead plays next Wednesday in Mansfield (1/2 hour from Boston).

Melvins & Big Business play on Saturday @ Paradise club I believe.

Most bars downtown & near F. Hall are sucky imo...the only ones I can think of are Mr. Dooley's and An Tain (which has dollar miller lights every night...you won't find that anywhere else). The better pubs are elsewhere.

You can hang out on Long Wharf, and take the water taxi back and forth to Charlestown for $1.70...for the view you get of the city, you can't really beat the price...go on a week night around 7.

The Brattle Theater in Harvard Sq. is a good place to see movies you can't see in most other places...it's cheap too.

Check the MFA for stuff goin' on there....Mass Art has a bunch of free galleries too if that's your thing.

And if you wanna see the funniest, trashiest, whorish people on the face of the planet, go to South Street Diner at around 3am...nice little gem right near Chinatown.

Go to South Station, get on the 12:10 Amtrak to Penn Station NY and come see a real city (and a real ballpark, before they close it) :)

He's not a real baseball fan. He's an Angels fan. The most uneducated fan base in baseball. I hate the Red Sox, but at least their fans know their shit.

Don't go to the bars in fanuiel hall (ESPECIALLY the purple shamrock)

there are tons of good bars scattered around-fanuiel hall just has a large concentration of them for the tourists. There are a lot of good bars up in Allston (BU territory, Green Line) and in Central Sq./Inman Sq. Cambridge (Red line)

    Whats wrong with Purple Shamrock?

I guess my advice sucked. If anyone's coming to Newport RI I'll help you out.

yeah I know nothing. But at least our team can kick more touchdowns on our court than your team.
  • Lots of good bars. There's nothing wrong with Cask N Flagon at gametime. It's fun. The Mexican place down the street sucks. Although the Piano Bar (Jake Ivory's usually no cover with ticket to that night's game) after the game is a hoot.

All the neighborhoods are the best. Avoid Faneuil Hall and hit the dive bars. Corrib in Brookline (there are other locations) Harry's in Brighton, Cornwall's in Kenmore. All of these have been my favorite bars at one time or the other.

There are so many good places to hang out, just don't go to a chain or where the frat boys go. You can tell when you see them trust me.

you're joking right? I thought you were trying to screw this guy.

really, really horrible music, meat-head guys and skanking under 21 girls from the burbs...I always thought the Shamrock was just an ongoing joke for the city.

It's alright to eat there during the day early evening.

Thanks for the insight on some of your faves though!

  • Yeah, I guess I am a Boston tourist myself. I like the city, but don't get there enough. Sorry about all my shitty advice.

However, the offer stands about Newport info. That's my hood.
  • Depending on what you're into- if you like a place that's a little more upscale, there's a great new place on Broad Street called MKT that serves a gimlet that is to die for. It's not overly fancy or anything, it just isn't really a dive.

Or off of Tremont there is a fantastic little place that's kind of hidden away called the Silvertone. It's very retro-themed, the food is decent and the prices are probably among the most reasonable in Boston.

Cask & Flagon is OK. The only problem is it gets really crowded, but the service is fantastic & on game day it can be a lot of fun. Boston Beer Works is right near there too, if you're a fan of microbrews that place is great.
Stay clear of the Fanueil Hall bars, and places like the Beantown Pub. LAME.

If you make it to Cambridge and want to stick around for a drink, right off Central Square is a great place called The Field & there's another place in Central called the Green Street Grill which is also very cool.

Nah not shitty. I agree w/ you on Cambridge for sure...I know plenty of people who love the Purple Shamrock and The Tap. Just depends on personal taste/prefs. I shouldn't say Union Street is all crap I guess...I think there are just better choices out there. Next time you visit, pm me and I'll map out a good pub crawl for ya :P
