Near Death...

......yeah, I almost died today. I'm not sure how I'm even alive actually.
I'm diabetic and my blood sugar dropped dangerously low during the night.
I went into convulsions in the early morning and my youngest son was the only one home with me. He said he tried to give me a popsicle but I threw it across the room. He's 8, I guess at that point he decided he had enough and went out to play. I remember waking up and not knowing where my son was and I remember thinking "it's too late and I didn't get to tell him I love him". I don't remember too much after that but I do recall calling my Dad to come and help me. My dad and my stepmom were at my house within minutes and to my horror now, I remember I was NAKED!! My stepmom shoved a pepsi down my throat as I fought her and then managed to get me to eat a popsicle. Once I had that sugar in me my stepmom checked my glucose and it was only 42. That right there is what scares me. I can't imagine what my glucose must have been without that pepsi and popsicle.
I seriously was on deaths door. Wow, sorry to be a bummer but writing this is making me feel ok about what happened. It's been about 10 years since I've had such a dangerously low blood sugar. I can feel how sore my muscles are from the convulsions and I'm a little afraid to go to sleep tonight. I think I may over do it on a bedtime snack.

one thing I suggest is to cherish every moment you're alive cause you never know when something will happen.stylo17 wrote:wow that's terrible. glad you're still okay though. is there anything you can do to make sure it doesnt happen again??
I have lots of friends who lost parents at early ages in their lives, and it played significant roles on their lives, especially because it was so sudden that sometimes things that should have been said were left unsaid, etc...0 -

Weirdly enough, this happened two nights in a row.
It happened Friday Night/Saturday Morning. I knew something was wrong on Saturday Morning and I was able to start taking in sugar on my own. After about an hour I drove my son and I to my parents house but I don't even remember that drive. When I got there my dad said I was as white as a ghost. They gave me about a gallon of Orange Juice and I was fine for the rest of the day.
But yeah, to answer your question........I'm on an insulin pump so I get a 24 hour drip of insulin. I made some adjustments to my pump settings today for the evening hours (while I sleep) and I just had a peice of pie not to mention the huge dinner I had. I know I skipped dinner on Friday and Saturday night which I'm sure was part of the problem

Very scary. I'm in agreement with taking steps to make sure it doesn't happen again! Hopefully there is something you can do. So glad you're ok.

Oh, how scary! Glad everything is ok now and I hope everything is ok fro now on.
Is there any particular reason why you try to stop people giving you sugar when you are like this? Do you even remember trying to fight them off?

So good to hear that you are ok. That would've been so scary for you. Can i please just offer a tiny little bit of advice. I'm sure you already know, because you have been a diabetic for a while by the sounds of it, but you just can't become complacent with it. It's such a serious condition and if not managed right the consequences can be terrible. Havinf said that, i understand sometimes you don't feel like your bedtime snacks but you have to have them.PJPixie wrote:......yeah, I almost died today. I'm not sure how I'm even alive actually.

Don't forget your bedtime snacks and please check you bsl before you go to bed. That's going to give you more peace of mind. Even though you have been a diabetic for a long time, you cannot always trust that how you 'think' you feel is how you 'actually' are doing inside. You have got to check you bsl. Please also tell your family, if you get to that stage again, not to try and administer anything to you orally or you may choke. It's best that they just call the paramedics because we will get to you quickly.
Have a talk with your son, he's old enough for you to explain to him that if mom get's like that then he needs to call someone for help. I wish i could help more, please take care of yourself.0 -

I'm just glad your ok Pixie. Look after yourself. I'm sure you don't need to be reminded how to manage your condition, but maybe talk to the kids about how to call the emergency services if something happens again.
I hope you feel better.A human being that was given to fly.

Im diabetic also and had this happen to me in a hot country, I woke up, i couldnt speak, i was involantary crying. My whole left side of my body was paralysed, i tried to get up and collaped on the floor, I was in the middle of a city where the hospital was an hour away, my only option was to choke down some coke, i tested my sugars and they were 0.9. It is a very scary experience, its happened to me twice now. Now im always carful about my sugar level before i go to bed. Glad youre okPearl Jam - London Astoria 20/4/06....One hell of a night

Thanks so much for all of your replies. Yeah, we had a talk with my youngest son and now he understands that if this happens again he is to call 911 and stay with me. My older son had gone away for the weekend. He know's how to handle all of this. I should have called the paramedics myself, I was able to call my dad..........The best use of Life is Love.

It's so good that you were able to call someone and get the help that you needed. There's such a fine line sometimes between low blood sugar where you can act on it yourself, and 'low to the point of you can't function'. It's good that you have people around you that can recognize the symptons and know how to take care of you. Look after yourself and take care. Big hugs to you PJPixie, everything will be ok.PJPixie wrote:Thanks so much for all of your replies. That is so frightening. I'm so glad you were able to call for help in time. Really really scary

I hope that was the last bad weekend you have to endure.
Scary stuff. I know I would be rattled all to pieces and just loving on my kids and wife today.
I wish I could be like Bob Newheart in that SNL skit and just tell you to "Stop it!" and all would be gold."...would you like some forks?" EV 12-02-060 -

I'm at work this morning and I swear, my desk has never looked so good!
I'm doing good so far this morning. My blood sugar was way ABOVE a healthy level this AM but I'm kinda glad about that. I was so nervous about going to sleep last night that I hardly slept at all.
I'll be taking a nap at some point today

You're so right. There is a super fine line in there. Most low blood sugars I'm on top of but the ones that happen when you're asleep.........those are doozies! Thank you for the hugs! The best use of Life is Love.
