Concert ticket prices

In 1995 i went to the Pearl Jam concert at Eastern Creek, Sydney (AU). I cant find the ticket stub but i can remember at the time the band themselves being in arguments with the venue and promoters about the ticket pricing being to expensive. In the end the price ended up being something in the vicinity of $30-$40 if i remember rightly.
The day was stinking hot and everyone was sweating like crazy but everyone was in an amazing mood because they (we) knew the band had fought for us and were on our side, and with tickets at that price they themselves made something crazy like $1 from each sale.
With inflation and cost of living im well aware of the price of things but i only months ago i paid $150 for a Guns "N Roses ticket. And now i look and Sting is charging $250 and Elton John as much as $340 and i can only imagine what Led Zeppelin will be charging
Now with the size of venues (sting at the Football stadium) surely they dont have to charge these prices to cover costs, so why are so many artists content in ripping off there fans and charging the prices they do?
Point being, how much is to much for concert tickets and what would you be willing to pay (excluding e-bay)?
