I heard today that you are not able to call a simple black-board a black-board anymore, because of its racial connotations. It must be called a chalk board. I'm sorry but this is ridiculous. And yet a White board remains a white board. Not that I care, and nor do I feel offended by a white board being called a white board but I must ask, are white people being discriminated against here?? Thoughts?

I'm studying primary education, and in my tutorial today some one asked the tutor. We had a good laugh about it, but it really is ridiculous.
Fairy penguins are no longer fairy penguins because homosexuals are offended by it. And the list can go on.Sydney 11/02/2003

at Christmas we arent allowed to put up FAIRY LIGHTS!!!! anymore... well we are... but we have to call them poof lanterns.oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.0

Haha. We used to have biscuits in Australia called gollywogs. They were chocolate biscuits shaped as a little man with an Afro. They looked like Michael Jackson from the Jackson 5 days. They are now called Scallywags. Now that I understand.Sydney 11/02/2003

Id imagine the vast majority of black people couldnt care less if it was called a blackboard. The media have no doubt blown some minor incidents where over sensitive black people have complained about something like that out of proportion.People say im paranoid. Well, they dont say it, but i know that's what they are thinking.0

Who makes these connexions? Who thinks about race when they hear the word "black board"?
I'll tell you: idiots THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG! THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

From what I remember our blackboards in elementary school were all green. That always confused me.0

For now on, every time someone complains about political correctness I'm going to refer them to this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K21e7po1Sro"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0

Political correctness is really over the top in the school system.
When I was in High School they revamped the entire classification of the classes offered. It used to be Basic - Regular -Advanced.
So they had say: Basic Chemistry, Regular Chemistry (that was just called Chemistry) and Advanced Chemistry. So each child was places in a class depending on their level, and past experience. So it freaked parents our in my overly PC school district and they had big meetings, and eventually the school district agreed that it was harmful to the students to hear that they were in "basic" level anything, and that it labeled them as less smart etc.
So their new classification was "Chemistry - Accelerated Chemistry - Honors Chemistry" So basically, everything was the same class, but the students who "Accelerated" before the title of their class. And the kids who were in the basic remedial class were supposed to feel smarter because apparently they were in the "regular" class now. Only we all knew what they did, and no one ever thought they were actually in some big old accelerated class when they weren't. Such a fuss over normal life.
I was also told that during my internship in actual schools I will be referred to as Ms. instead of Mrs. because there are women in the schools that are sensitive about not being married yet, so everyone is Ms. to not point out who is married and who is not. WTF? 0 0

That is so ridiculous. I agree - completely over the top. The board actually is black (unless it's green)pjfan31 wrote:I heard today that you are not able to call a simple black-board a black-board anymore, because of its racial connotations. But not being able to say the word black implies that there's something wrong with it - which is probably the complete opposite of the intended effect. There's a light when my baby's in my arms But not being able to say the word black implies that there's something wrong with it - which is probably the complete opposite of the intended effect. I call white boards, "cracker boards" and so far no white people have complained. Of course, I'm not a teacher...Idaho's Premier Outdoor Writer

            To add to this...
The gifted program in my daughter's school does not refer to itself as the gifted program anymore, as they need to point out that all children are gifted in their own way. Instead, they call it resource.
To me, that implies kids who need added help for reasons other than being advanced learners.
Yes, all kids are indeed gifted and special... but I just felt like that was a little over the top. Not that the other examples in this thread aren't!For those who scoff at "Jamily" in my name... 9 years ago, when my first daughter was born there were jokes about whether my priority would be my family or PJ. I smiled and quipped "I am a JamilyMan." What was a family joke became a hated term among jammers. Didn't see that one coming!0

I have to complain with my son's school about their stubborn referring to their boards as "smart". Surely that's discriminatory!... and the will to show I will always be better than before.0
