    my girlfriend works in textbook publishing and it is apparently policy that there can be no pictures of zebras in textbooks. the black and white stripes apparently spur all kinds of racism in children. :rolleyes:

    we're really failing to address the problem here. kids will be kids, they'll say mean things and reflect prejudices they see in their home. by trying to hide it and not discuss it except in some sanctimonious lecture doesn't achieve anything. kids don't learn abstractly. they learn by experience. if some kid makes a stupid remark, the teacher should call them on it and have them explain. they need to see the injustice of it and feel the embarrassment to learn how inappropriate it is. and it will work.

    personal story: in high school we had this physics competition thing and teams were red, blue, and white. i cracked a joke about one kid not being white team material. it was intended to be a bard about their physics knowledge. he was about the only black kid in the school though. i've never felt so embarrassed. THAT is what kids need to learn about this sort of thing. not absurdly removing anything that might evoke a stupid remark from a kid who didn't think things through. we don't have enough humiliation and embarrassment in schools anymore.

    You know the only thing worse than people who are so politically correct that they get offended on behalf of everyone and everything? People who make out like political correctness is the most terrible thing imaginable. Christ, doesn't it really suck that we can't even call black people "coons" any more? :rolleyes:

    Presumably most sane people would agree that silly things like the renaming of black boards are balanced out by the fact that the world is progressively moving away from, y'know, slavery and lynching and the holocaust n' shit.
