World cities embrace Earth Hour

Last year Sydney, this year the world.

Twenty-four cities will take part next month in the Earth Hour climate change initiative pioneered by Sydney.

More than two million Sydney residents turned off lights and appliances for one hour during the event in March last year, in a communal effort to reduce the city's greenhouse gas emissions.

This year, tens of millions will be taking the same step.

Eight cities - Atlanta, San Francisco, Phoenix, Bangkok, Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal and Dublin - joined the Earth Hour movement this week.

On Saturday March 29, at 8pm local time, the lights will go out for one hour in all these cities, as well as Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense, Manila, Suva, Chicago, Tel Aviv, Toronto and Christchurch.

The event is the highlight of Earth Hour's campaign to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take simple steps to cut their greenhouse gas emissions.

"Climate change is a truly global issue and people around the world are demanding action," Earth Hour executive director Andy Ridley said.

"We're delighted there has been so much interest from major cities around the world.

"Last year we were incredibly excited that more than two million people in Sydney took part in Earth Hour. If we see the same participation levels around the globe that we did in Sydney, then we can anticipate more than 30 million people involved."

Mr Ridley said he was hoping even more cities would take up the challenge.

Dublin Lord Mayor Paddy Bourke said in a statement issued by Earth Hour: "This campaign is important and everyone from citizens up to government has a duty to do what they can against global warming.

"It is up to us all to do what we can to reduce our CO2 emissions. Through one simple action, turning off our lights for an hour, we can deliver a powerful message about the need for action."

Earth Hour is an initiative of the global conservation organisation WWF.

"Turning the lights off for Earth Hour is a great first step, but if you really want to see a difference, then make Earth Hour part of your everyday life," the Earth Hour website (http://www.earthhour.org) says.

"Simple things like turning off appliances while not in use and switching your light globes to energy efficient bulbs, will all help us reach our goal of reducing our annual emissions by five per cent.

"Even something as simple as turning out lights when you're not in a room and switching to cleaner sources of electricity, like green power, make a big difference."

..........

March 29... :) hope many of you take part
