McCain not sure how many houses he and wife own
WASHINGTON - Days after he cracked that being rich in the U.S. meant earning at least $5 million a year, Republican presidential candidate John McCain acknowledged that he wasn't sure how many houses he and his wealthy wife actually own.
"I think — I'll have my staff get to you," McCain responded to a question posed by Politico, according to a story Thursday on the publication's Web site. "It's condominiums where — I'll have them get to you."
Later, the McCain campaign told Politico that McCain and his wife, Cindy, have at least four in three states, Arizona, California and Virginia. Newsweek recently estimated the two owned at least seven properties.
On the campaign trail, McCain doesn't refer to his wife's wealth, estimated by some at $100 million and based on her late father's Arizona beer distributorship.
Democratic rival Barack Obama's campaign has been trying to make their wealth more widely known to blunt criticism that Obama is an elitist out of touch with ordinary Americans. Obama owns one house, the family home in Chicago, his campaign said.
According to her 2006 tax returns, Cindy McCain had a total income of $6 million. She has not released her 2007 returns, which she files separately from her husband. McCain's tax returns showed a total income of $405,409 in 2007.
In a forum last week with the Rev. Rick Warren, McCain was asked to define the word "rich" and to give a figure. After promoting his tax policies, McCain said: "I think if you are just talking about income, how about $5 million?" The audience laughed, and he added: "But seriously, I don't think you can — I don't think seriously that — the point is that I'm trying to make here, seriously — and I'm sure that comment will be distorted — but the point is that we want to keep people's taxes low and increase revenues."
Obama, asked the same question at the forum, said those making $250,000 and higher are in the top 3 to 4 percent and "doing well." Obama and his wife, Michelle, reported making $4.2 million in 2007.

and McCain tries to paint Obama as an elitist? You know, the guy that just paid off his student loans last year...0
-
we all know that what McCain means by "elitist" is... he does not know his place, and he should only work in the white house as kitchen help.0

You know, I don't give a rats ass how many houses McCain owns. He's rich. Big deal. I can't imagine how he'd have a clue how the average Joe manages their daily struggles, but whatever. Does any politician?
What scares me is that he can't friggin REMEMBER how many. Can't remember. WTF?
I kind of want a President that can actually remember stuff. Even the simple stuff. Like how many houses they own.0 -

a person does not have to be rich to an elitist. secondly, does ayone worry that it did take that long for Obama to pay his student loan considering how much money he was making.People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid."

and the winner for the dumbest post ever wrote goes to? have you ever meet McCain, have any reason to believe that he is a racist as you are calling him. God, you should work for FOX news as you do as much research on a topic as they do.People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid."

what the hell does this have to do with John McCain not being able to remember how many houses he owns?
Just asking.0 -
look up, someone raised the point that Obama just paid off his student loans and therefore can't be an elistist. i don't see that as a point to make Obama not look like an elistist and actually said that it is actually quite worrysome that it did take that long to pay off his student loan.anotherclone wrote:what the hell does this have to do with John McCain not being able to remember how many houses he owns?

it has nothing to do with Mccain and how many houses he owns. i don't care how many houses McCain has and maybe McCain does know but is trying to act like he is everyman.People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid."

No. I am sure he could have paid them off a while ago. He just stuck with the original schedule. Probably so we could remember that he had student loans. A political move? Yes. Though it may be refreshing to have a president that actually had student loans. I bet he'd be the first (Maybe Clinton, who came from comparatively humble background).I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.0 -

"Everyman" knows how many houses he owns.
I don't care how many he owns. While I think it is too bad that being rich is a prerequisite of being president, it is what it is. But if it's like three houses, then I do question his attention to detail. I don't know how many shirts I own, so if he buys houses like I buy shirts, then I guess it's excusable.
I am honestly more concerned with this line from the story: "Days after he cracked that being rich in the U.S. meant earning at least $5 million a year..." That's out of touch.I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.0 -

exactly. why would it be refreshing to have a president that has student loans. is it the whole "i want my president to be like me thing?) i know many poeple who went to school and their parents paid, what is the big deal? a presdient doesn't have to be like you or have the same background as you to understand what it is that is needed.People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid."

I wonder if McCain remembers collaborating with Noth Vietnamese captors...
“I am a war criminal,” he confessed on “60 Minutes” in 1997. “I bombed innocent women and children.”
“I am a black criminal and I have performed the deeds of an air pirate. I almost died and the Vietnamese people saved my life, thanks to the doctors.”
McCains solitary confinement confession.
"I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." McCains own admission under intense interrogation.
I wonder if he remembers divulging specific military information: like the name of the aircraft carrier on which he was based, the number of US pilots that had been lost, the number of aircraft in his flight formation, as well as information about the location of rescue ships.
I wonder if her remembers giving Vietnamese “highly classified information, the most important of which was the package routes, which were routes used to bomb North Vietnam. He gave in detail the altitude they were flying, the direction, if they made a turn… he gave them what primary targets the United States was interested in.
I wonder if he ever knew and forgot that before his capture the Vietnamese shoot-down of aircraft success rate was about 30% as compared to 60% success after his capture and spending a week at Hanoi Hilton and then being moved to a hospital where only the Vietnamese were being treated (no other POWs) by Russian doctors.
Damn right he remembers!!0 -

everyman prob. is not married to a women to be worth 100 million. i understand but the commnet about 5 Million was a joke. read the article or watch the show where he said it. he actually even said that he knows that joke will be used for something else. ah eddie who are so right when you " if you hate something, don't you do it too"People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid."

"Does a guy who made more than $4 million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses? Does a guy who worries about the price of arugula and thinks regular people "cling" to guns and religion in the face of economic hardship really want to have a debate about who’s in touch with regular Americans?
The reality is that Barack Obama's plans to raise taxes and opposition to producing more energy here at home as gas prices skyrocket show he’s completely out of touch with the concerns of average Americans."0 -

[Regarding flying the Confederate flag at the South Carolina Statehouse,] McCain said last week that many in South Carolina view the flag as a “symbol of heritage.” That phrase is used by some who want the flag to continue flying over the Statehouse.
Source: Holly Ramer, Associated Press Jan 16, 2000
In 1983, McCain voted against passing a bill to designate the third Monday of every January as a federal holiday in honor of King. Four years later, then-Arizona Governor Evan Mecham rescinded Martin Luther King Day as a state holiday, saying it had been established through an illegal executive order by his Democratic predecessor.
McCain said he thought Mecham was correct in his decision.
and didnt McCain just fote against affermative action?
and isnt he calling Obama an elitist, and arrogant? what does he mean by this, McCain is the one supporting big buisiness over the people, McCain is the one who thinks anyone making under 5 million a year is not rich, McCain is the one with a wife spending 500 grand in one moth on her credit cards, McCain is the one tolling around in 600 dollar shoes. so who is the arrogant elitist? because of these facts, mcCain does not mean Obama is arrogant and elitist because he is out of touch with the common man, what he obviously means is that Obama does not know his place.0 -
McCain has nothing but hatred for “the gooks” who allegedly tortured him. As he told reporters on his campaign bus (The Straight Talk Express) in 2000, “I will hate them as long as I live.”0

I actually never had student loans myself. My parents paid for most (though I contributed through HS and College jobs).
Whether or not he actually has student loans is semantics. But these candidates throw around terms like "elitism" and so many have been rich since birth. Nobody calls our current president an elitist. But he's never for one second felt any money worries. How important is that? That's up to you to decide. Someone on here once questioned how Obama can be voted in when he's never even run a business. Same thing applies here. Do those who have gone through what most Americans go through have an easier time relating or are they more in touch? I think so. Is it valuable to the presidency? I think so, but our electoral history proves me in the minority.I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.0 -

thats right he did say “I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live.” - and then he refused to apologize for it and said he would continue to use the word.0
