Poll Tax?

I think this was covered on Olbermann or Maddow...
So the 24th amendment got rid of the poll tax, keeping those that couldn't pay the poll tax, from losing their constitutional right to vote.
Not that it's intentional, but are the long lines to vote, up to 12 hrs in places have been reported, on weekdays (though people to work weekends), like a poll tax? Can a paycheck to paycheck person afford to stand in line for 4 hrs? 8 hrs? more?
I know we are expected to have more vote than ever before, but this was a problem in 2004 in many places, and hasn't been addressed.
We need a national holiday to vote...

Seems to be the best way to go about it.
Not that a holiday is necessarily a bad thing--hell, I'll take any free days I can get--but it's really not a necessity. If it comes to a vote, sure, I'll vote for the day off. Otherwise, it really doesn't bother me.
So, in a sense, long lines = loss of pay isn't much like a poll tax, the line can easily be avoided.
I am a fan of federal holidays only because it keeps the assholes in congress from taking any more of my liberties or money. Gridlock and federal holidays -- what we need more of.
all well and good, but my girlfirend lives in a town where there is no polling station so it is all mail in ballots, she didn't get her ballot until today, so, she's going to have to drop it off in person anyway.
it's pretty amazing that this country continues to be a huge embarassment in regards to the process of how we elect our highest officials. (Cue the picture from 2000 of that guy in Florida, eyes bulged out, staring at a ballot to see if there's a dimpled chad)

Wow, they were mailed weeks ago here. My daughter got hers at least 3 weeks ago. Sounds like an issue that should be raised with your election commission.
I agree that the whole dimpled, hanging chad fiasco was embarrassing. As embarrassing as the mouth-breathers who couldn't figure out how to cast a proper ballot. They should have all been pitched, since there's no real way to divine intent on a ballot.
you're in Washington, yes? the whole state votes by mail? ... they've got the process down ...
We're in California (she lives in the east bay) ... things are a little ... uh ... unorganized at times.
