Protest Music- The Next Generation

There are of course many great anti-war, anti-prejudice, anti-injustice tunes from the 60's and 70's, but there's a whole new batch that's come out in recent years that's creating the next generation of Protest Music. I think it would be fun to point each other to tunes we may not be aware of. Of course, we all know the PJ has some in their own catalog, but there are others out there, too, some from "political" artists and some from more unexpected sources. I'm gonna start with the new Ben Harper song, Gather 'Round the Stone, which I can't get enough of and have already mentioned in two other forums. :p It's on his new album, "Both Sides of the Gun".

Here are the lyrics:

hey hey hey hey gather 'round the stone
hey hey hey hey gather 'round the stone

you're too young to know
that you're too young to go
there's no freedom to be found
lying face up in the ground

ashes from an unfinished life
are all that's left
in a teardrop-shaped locket
hanging from his mother's chest

hey hey hey hey gather 'round the stone
hey hey hey hey gather 'round the stone

you whip the back of freedom
'til it bleeds an oil stream
then you sail down upon it
in your killing machine

old men who send children
off to die in vain
they will hear death's constant whisper
call, "remember my name"

hey hey hey hey gather 'round the stone
hey hey hey hey gather 'round the stone
hey hey hey hey gather 'round the stone
hey hey hey hey gather 'round the stone
Life is the riddle
Of which we're caught in the middle.
A couple of lucky ones
Tangled up in too much love

Good call, eddie's grrl, I'm in love with this album! Here's another one ....

you left them swimming for their lives
    down in new orleans
can't afford a gallon of gasoline
    with your useless degrees
    and your contrary statistics
    this government business
    is straight up sadistic

    you don't fight for us
but expect us to die for you
you have no sympathy for us
    still i cry for you
    you may kill the revolutionary
but the revolution you can never bury

don't you dare speak to us
    like we work for you
selling false hope like some new dope
    we're addicted to

    i'm not a desperate man
but these are desperate times at hand
this generation is beyond your command

it won't be long till the people flood the streets
    and take you down
    one and all

    a black rain
    is gonna fall
"Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity." ~ MLK, 1963

This is the song I want played during the revolution. It's about time we rise up and throw ALL of these criminals out of office...and this would be a good song to get everyone worked up.

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
We don’t need no water let the motherfucker burn
    Burn motherfucker burn

Hello my name is jimmy pop and I’m a dumb white guy
I’m not old or new but middle school fifth grade like junior high
I don’t know mofo if y’all peeps be buggin’ give props to my ho cause she all fly
But I can take the heat cause I’m the other white meat known as ’kid funky fried’
Yeah I’m hung like planet pluto hard to see with the naked eye
But if I crashed into uranus I would stick it where the sun don’t shine
Cause I’m kind of like han solo always stroking my own wookie
I’m the root of all that’s evil yeah but you can call me cookie

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
We don’t need no water let the motherfucker burn
    Burn motherfucker burn

Yo yo this hard-core ghetto gangster image takes a lot of practice
I’m not black like barry white no I am white like frank black is
So if man is five and the devil is six than that must make me seven
    This honkey’s gone to heaven
But if I go to hell then I hope I burn well
I’ll spend my days with j.f.k., marvin gaye, martha raye, and lawrence welk
And kurt cobain, kojak, mark twain and jimi hendrix’s poltergeist
And webster yeah emmanuel lewis cause he’s the anti-christ

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire
We don’t need no water let the motherfucker burn
    Burn motherfucker burn

still haven't picked up the album yet...this part reminds me of the chorus to that song rage against the machine did w/ maynard james keenan

    "Can't Kill The Revolution"

    [Maynard:]
    Living on the street shores
He didn't learn and wanted children
Said, "What is there left to stay alive for?"
    He doesn't wanna see it..

    [Maynard:]
He didn't wanna deal with it
Here they come, feelings that come as natural
Whatever left, he considered a loss, y'all
    He doesn't wanna see it...

    [Maynard:]
Running away, getting some kinda cure
"What is there left to keep him alive?" she said
Give him your love, give him your love to save him
Give him your love, give him your love to save him

    [Maynard:]
Give him your love, give him your love to save him
Don't run away, give him your love to save him
Give him your love, give him your love to save him
    Give him your love...

    [Zack 2x:]
    You can kill the revolutionary
But you can't kill the revolution

    [Zack & Maynard 2x:]
    You can kill the revolutionary
But you can't kill the revolution

    [Zack:]
Lies, negative indoctrination of our good selves
Promote feelings of such hopelessness, powerlessness
Suicide or a slower death from addiction
seemed to be the only way to stop the pain

    [Maynard:]
    Running...

    [Zack:]
Lies, negative indoctrination of our good selves

was a poem but has been performed by rage against the machine

Hadda Been Playin on the Jukebox ~ Allen Ginsburg

It had to be flashin' like the daily double
It had to be playin' on TV
It had to be loud mouthed on the comedy hour
It had to be announced over loud speakers

The CIA and the Mafia are in cahoots

It had to be said in old ladies' language
It had to be said in American headlines
Kennedy stretched and smiled and got double crossed by lowlife goons and agents
    Rich bankers with criminal connections
Dope pushers in CIA working with dope pushers from Cuba working with a
big time syndicate from Tampa, Florida
And it had to be said with a big mouth

It had to be moaned over factory foghorns
It had to be chattered on car radio news broadcasts
It had to be screamed in the kitchen
It had to be yelled in the basement where uncles were fighting

It had to be howled on the streets by newsboys to bus conductors
It had to be foghorned into New York harbor
It had to echo onto hard hats
It had to turn up the volume in university ballrooms

It had to be written in library books, footnoted
It had to be in the headlines of the Times and Le Monde
It had to be barked on TV
It had to be heard in alleys through ballroom doors

It had to be played on wire services
It had to be bells ringing
Comedians stopped dead in the middle of a joke in Las Vegas

It had to be FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover and Frank Costello syndicate
mouthpiece meeting in Central Park, New York weekends,
    reported Time magazine

It had to be the Mafia and the CIA together starting war on Cuba,
Bay of Pigs and poison assassination headlines

It had to be dope cops in the Mafia
Who sold all their heroin in America

It had to be the FBI and organized crime working together
    in cahoots against the commies

It had to be ringing on multinational cash registers
A world-wide laundry for organized criminal money

It had to be the CIA and the Mafia and the FBI together
    They were bigger than Nixon
And they were bigger than war

It had to be a large room full of murder
It had to be a mounted ass- a solid mass of rage
    A red hot pen
A scream in the back of the throat

It had to be a kid that can breathe
It had to be in Rockefellers' mouth
It had to be central intelligence, the family, allofthis, the agency Mafia
It had to be organized crime

One big set of gangs working together in cahoots

    Hitmen
    Murderers everywhere

    The secret
    The drunk
    The brutal
    The dirty rich

On top of a slag heap of prisons
    Industrial cancer
    Plutonium smog
    Garbage cities

Grandmas' bed soft from fathers' resentment

It had to be the rulers
    They wanted law and order
And they got rich on wanting protection for the status quo

    They wanted junkies
    They wanted Attica
    They wanted Kent State
    They wanted war in Indochina

It had to be the CIA and the Mafia and the FBI

    Multinational capitalists
    Strong armed squads
Private detective agencies for the rich
And their armies and navies and their air force bombing planes

    It had to be capitalism
    The vortex of this rage
    This competition
    Man to man

The horses head in a capitalists' bed
    The Cuban turf
    It rumbles in hitmen
    And gang wars across oceans

Bombing Cambodia settled the score when Soviet pilots
    manned Egyptian fighter planes

    Chiles' red democracy
Bumped off with White House pots and pans

    A warning to Mediterranean governments

The secret police have been embraced for decades

The NKPD and CIA keep each other's secrets
The OGBU and DIA never hit their own
The KGB and the FBI are one mind

Brute force and full of money
Brute force, world-wide, and full of money
Brute force, world-wide, and full of money
Brute force, world-wide, and full of money
Brute force, world-wide, and full of money

It had to be rich and it had to be powerful
They had to murder in Indonesia 500000
They had to murder in Indochina 2000000
They had to murder in Czechoslovakia
They had to murder in Chile
They had to murder in Russia

And they had to murder in America
    standin above the crowd
he had a voice that was strong and loud and
i swallowed his facade cos i'm so
    eager to identify with
    someone above the crowd
someone who seemed to feel the same
someone prepared to lead the way

ah, yes- Black Rain is another great one. what's so cool about these tunes is that even tho the words are full of pain & anger, the music is accessible and you really want to get up and move and clap and sing and protest right there next to him. :) this one in particular is quite groovy. ;)

i also feel echoes of a hard rain's a-gonna fall in this one, for somewhat obvious reasons. :)

    this is a GREAT song!

    World Wide Suicide

I felt the earth on Monday. It moved beneath my feet.
In the form of a morning paper. Laid out for me to see.

Saw his face in a corner picture. I recognized the name.
Could not stop staring at the. Face I'd never see again.

It's a shame to awake in a world of pain
What does it mean when a war has taken over

It's the same everyday in a hell manmade
What can be saved, and who will be left to hold her?

    The whole world...World over.
    It's a worldwide suicide.

Medals on a wooden mantle. Next to a handsome face.
That the president took for granted.
    Writing checks that others pay.

And in all the madness. Thought becomes numb and naive.
So much to talk about. Nothing for to say.

It's the same everyday and the wave won't break
Tell you to pray, while the devils on their shoulder

Laying claim to the take that our soldiers save
Does not equate, and the truth's already out there

    The whole world,... World over.
    It's a worldwide suicide.

    The whole world,... World over.
    It's a worldwide suicide.

Looking in the eyes of the fallen
You got to know there's another, another, another, another
    Another way

It's a shame to awake in a world of pain
What does it mean when a war has taken over

It's the same everyday and the wave won't break
Tell you to pray, while the devils on their shoulder

    The whole world,... World over.
    It's a worldwide suicide.

    The whole world,... World over.
    It's a worldwide suicide.

    Right In Two - Tool

    Angels on the sideline,
    Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father give these humans free will?
    Now they’re all confused.

Don’t these talking monkeys know that
Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly old monkeys,
Where there’s one, you're bound to divide it,
    Right in two.

    Angels on the sideline,
    Baffled and confused.

Father blessed them all with reason.
And this is what they choose.
    Monkey, killing monkey, killing monkey.
    Over pieces of the ground.

    Silly monkeys give them thumbs,
    They forge a blade,
And where there's one they're bound to divide it,
    Right in two.
    Right in two.

    Monkey, killing monkey, killing monkey.
    Over pieces of the ground.
    Silly monkeys give them thumbs,
    They make a club.
    And beat their brother down.
How they survive so misguided is a mystery.
Repugnant is a creature who would,
Squander the ability to lift an eye to heavan, conscience of his fleeting time ehere

Cut it all right in two.
Cut it all right in two.
Cut it all right in two.
Cut it all right in two.

Fight, over the clouds, over the earth, over sky.
Fight, over life, over blood, over air and light.
Over love, over sun, over another.
Fight, all the time. Over what? Over Lies and...

    Angels on the sideline again.
Been so long with patience and reason.
    Angels on the sideline again.
Wondering when this tug of war will end.

Cut it all right in two.
Cut it all right in two.
Cut it all right in two.
    Right in two.
    Right in two.

Who are you to wave your finger?
You musta been out your head!
Eye hole deep in muddy waters
    You practically raised the dead

Rob the grave to snow the cradle
    And burn the evidence down
Soapbox house of cards and glass
So don't go tossin' your stones all 'round

    You must have been… high
    You must have been… high
    You must have been…

Foot in mouth and head up ass
    So what’chu talkin’ bout?
Difficult to dance ‘round this one ‘til you pull it out… boy
You must have been… so high
You must have been… so high

    Steal, borrow reefer
    Save your shady inference
    Kangaroo done hung the juror
    with the innocent

Now you weep all shades of chosen indigo.
Gotta lemon juice up in your eye.
When you've pissed all over my black kettle
You must have been… high, high
You must have been… high, high

Who are you to wave your finger?
    So full of it.
    Eyeballs deep in muddy waters
    Fuckin’ hypocrite.
Liar, lawyer, mirror show me what’s the difference.

KANGAROO DONE HUNG THE GUILTY WITH THE INNOCENT.

Now, you weep all shades of chosen indigo.
Got lemon juice up in your … high, eye
When you've pissed all over my black kettle
    You must have been…

Who are you to wave your finger?
Who are you to wave your fatty fingers at me?
You must have been out ‘cho mind…

    Weepin' shades of indigo
    Shed without a reason
    Weepin' shades of indigo

Liar, lawyer, mirror for you. What’s the difference?
Kangaroo be stoned he's guilty as the government.
Now, you weep all shades of chosen indigo
Got lemon juice up in your high, eye

    baby boy
    dying under hot desert sun,
    watch your colours run.

did you believe the lie they told you,
that christ would lead the way
and in a matter of days
    hand us victory?

did you buy the bull they sold you,
that the bullets and the bombs
    and all the strong arms
    would bring home security?

    all eyes upon
    dry drunk emperor
gold cross cross jock skull and bones
    mocking smile,
    he's been
    standing naked for a while!
get him gone, get him gone, get him gone!!
and bring all the thieves to trial.

    end their promise
    end their dream
    watch it turn to steam
rising to the nose of some cross legged god
    gog of magog
    end times sort of thing.
    oh unmentionable disgrace
    shield the childrens faces
    as all the monied apes
    display unimaginably poor taste
    in a scramble for mastery.

atta' boy get em with your gun
    till mr. mega ton
    tells us when we've won
    or
    what we're gonna leave undone.

    all eyes upon
    dry drunk emperor
gold cross jock skull and bones
    mocking smile,
    he's been
    naked for a while.
get him gone, get him gone, get him gone!!!
and bring all his thieves to trial.

what if all the fathers and the sons
    went marching with their guns
    drawn on washington.
    that would seal the deal,
    show if it was real,
    this supposed freedom.

what if all the bleeding hearts
    took it on themselves
to make a brand new start.
    organs pumpin on their sleeves,
paint murals on the white house
    feed the leaders L.S.D
    grab your fife and drum,
    grab yor gold baton
and let's meet on the lawn,
    shut down this hypocrisy.

Well, I'm on a Tool "high..."

    Jambi

"Here from the king's mountain view
Here from the wild dream come true
Feast like a sultan I do
On treasures and flesh, never few.

But I, I would wish it all away.
If I thought I'd Lose you just one day.

The devil and his had me down,
in love with the dark side I'd found.
Dabble in all the way down
up to my neck soon to drown.

But you changed that all for me.
Lifted me up, turned me round.
    So I...
    I...
    I...
    I...
    I would
    I would
    I would
    Wish this all away

Prayed like a father dusk to dawn.
Beg like a hooker all night long.
Tempted the devil with my song.
And got what I wanted all along.

    But I,
    And I would,
    If I could,
    And I would,
    Wish it away,
    Wish it away,
    Wish it all away,
    Wanna wish it all away,
No prize that could hold sway,
    Or justify my giving away,
    my center.

So if I could I'd wish it all away.
If I thought tomorrow would take you away.
You're my peace of mind, my home, my center.
I'm just trying to hold on,
    One more day.

    Dim my eyes...
    Dim my eyes...

Dim my eyes if they should compromise
our fulcrum what you need divides me then
I might as well be gone.

    Shine on forever.
    Shine on benevolent son.

    Shine down upon the broken.
Shine until the two become one.

    Shine on forever.
    Shine on benevolent son.

    Shine on upon the severed.
Shine until the two become one.

    Divided I'm withering away.

    Divide and I'm withering away.

Shine on upon the many, light our way
    Benevolent son.

    Breathe in union.
    Breathe in union.
    Breathe in union.
    Breathe in union.
    Breathe in union.
    So as one survive.
    Another day and season.

Silence leech, and save your poison.
Silence leech, and stay out of my way!"

    Schism

"I know the pieces fit cuz I watched them fall away
    mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing,
pure intention juxtaposed will set two lovers souls in motion
disintegrating as it goes testing our communication
the light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
we cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication.

I know the pieces fit cuz I watched them tumble down
no fault, none to blame it doesn't mean I don't desire to
point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over.
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication.

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between,
And the circling is worth it.
    Finding beauty in the dissonance.

There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away.
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the the math enough to know the dangers of a second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow, and strengthen our communication cold silence
has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion
    between supposed lovers
    between supposed brothers.

And I know the pieces fit."

I don't know if you can... but can you get an owner for ONS, that's O-N-S, Junior Market... the address is 1934 East Anaheim.
All the windows are busted out, and it's like a free-for-all in here and uh the owner should at least come down here and see if he can secure his business,
    if he wants to...

April 26th, 1992, there was a riot on the streets, tell me where were you?
You were sittin' home watchin' your TV, while I was paticipatin' in some anarchy.

First spot we hit it was my liqour store. I finally got all that alcohol I can't afford.
With red lights flashin', time to retire, And then we turned that liquor store into a structure fire.

Next stop we hit it was the music shop, It only took one brick to make that window drop.
Finally we got our own p.a. Where do you think I got this guitar that you're hearing today?
    Hey!

(call fire, respond Mobil Station, Alamitos and Anahiem, its uhh flamin' up good. 10-4 Alamitos and Anaheim)

    Never doin' no time.

When we returned to the pad to unload everything, It dawned on me that I need new home furnishings.
So once again we filled the van until it was full, since that day my livin' room's been more comfortable.

Cause everybody in the 'hood has had it up to here, It's getting harder and harder and harder each and every year.

Some kids went in a store with thier mother, I saw her when she came out she was gettin' some Pampers.

They said it was for the black man, they said it was for the Mexican, and not for the white man.

But if you look at the streets it wasn't about Rodney King, It's 'bout this fucked up situation and these fucked up police.
It's about coming up and staying on top and screamin' "187 on a mother fuckin' cop"!
It's not written on the paper it's on the wall. National guard??!
    Smoke from all around,

    bo! bo! bo!

(Units, units be advised there is an attempted 211 to arrest now at 938 Temple, 938 Temple... 30 subjects with bats.. tryin' to get inside the CB's House)

(as long as I'm alive, I'mma live illegal)

Let it burn, wanna let it burn, wanna let it burn, wanna wanna let it burn

    (I'm feelin' Sad and Blue)

Riots on the streets of Miami, oh, Riots on the streets of Chicago, oh, on the streets of Long Beach, mmm, and San Francisco (Boise, Idaho), Riots on the streets of Kansas City (Salt Lake, Huntington Beach, CA), Tuscalusa, Alabama (Arcada Compton Michigan), Cleveland, Ohio, Fountain Valley (Texas, Barstow - Let's do this every year), Paramount, Victorville (Twice a Year), Eugene OR, Eureka CA (Let it burn, let it burn), Hesperia (Oh, ya let it burn, wont'cha wont'cha let it burn), Santa Barbara, Nevada, (let it burn) Phoenix, Arizona, San Diego, Lakeland, Florida, (let it burn) fuckin... 29 Palms (wontcha let it burn)

Any units assist 334 Willow, structure fire, and numerous subjects looting.

10-15 to get rid of this looter..

I'm a little late commenting to your post from 4 months ago. But, I couldn't have come across any better topic before tonight! I received a call from the US Gov about 45 minutes ago and I thought "WTF?" My middle son is 16 years old going into the 11th grade. Well, it was Srgt. So & So who was assigned to my son's school. WTF!!! I told him he is only 16 years old! I am anti-war. Please don't be coming after my son!" the damn sgt snickered at me under his breath. I told him that my son would register when he is 18 because the law required it. But until then not to be calling my house or searching for my son at school.

on another note - I LOVE BEN HARPER!!!!!!! I was waiting for the doors to my nearest Hastings to be unlocked when Both Sides of the Gun was released. I've been blessed to see him live 3 times and look forward to the next time!

thanks for starting this thread. what a grand idea. now, I'll take the time to read the replys and send in a song from my library.

    PEACE!

    Me and the german, eh?

I like this song, it sounds like an anti-fascism song, from germany. All the talking about neo-fascism and nazis, etc...

The translation is pretty bad, I just used google translator, some of the untranslated words are pretty obvious though, like "neofaschistische". If I have more time later, I'll try to clean it up. This is quite different than Rammstein, who sound like they really are Nazis. That's what I know though, I'm not from germany.
I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Your nature is to do harm, mine is to love truth, and to make it public in spite of you. - Voltaire

    In the wilderness uncountable voices
earplugs for the birds and the animals
and blinders for your beast of burden, the will for learning
these books were made for burning
    in the wilderness
beneath the ancient sand lies crushed and tanned those sapphire girls
    may we never forget you
    Alert status red
but the sun comes up instead
In the wilderness the only place to find freedom is in the dictionary
    under "F"
men in holes, men in caves, men in chains I ask but the store clerk needn't check
man I forget which came first
the bad idea or me befallen by it?
not giving a shit may we never forget you
    Alert status red
but the sun comes up instead
    In the wilderness
    senile live the zealous
lost to the treasures that compel us
    muted down like patriots amiss
you know I'm jealous of how you can just turn them off
those bad ideas that feel so soft
    may they never forget you
    Alert status red
but the sun comes up instead
    Which came first,
the bad idea or me befallen by it?

Both Sides of the Gun is an amazing record. I listen to it often and it reminds me there are still people who care enough about the state of the world to try and change it with music. Neil's new album is very good too.

Listening to the new Stone Sour CD this song stood out and before I even found out it was an Anti-Bush song, I felt it was something like it. These lyrics may not be exact the idiot on songmeanings.net screwed it up, and i dont have the booklet verify.

Stone Sour - Come What(ever) May

    Can you take away
    Every single day
That we have given to another false prophet?

    Can you give us all
    A reason not to fall
Before you take away another broken promise?

    Show your pretty face,
    I have better taste,
You're still a rapist of an entire nation.

    You wanna be the man?
    You gotta be a man.
But you are nothing but a saddened simulation.

How can we ever live this down?
How can we ever live this down?

    Keep your fingers crossed,
The truth is at a loss.
Big decision for an ordinary coward.

    The only problem is
    Your fucking rhetoric.
We're more in danger than before you took power.

    Now it's just a game,
    God, you'll never change.
You'd sell us out if you can only find a buyer.

    You don't give a shit,
    as long as idiots
    are in your corner,
you could set us all on fire

How can we ever live this down?
How can we ever live this down?
you never wanted to be- they only wanted a parody
you want the world to be free?
What the hell is free about it?

    Now we've reached the end,
    Just get it over with.
But this is building to an anemic conclusion.

    Come what(ever) may,
There's going to be a day,
When we have figured out a plausible solution.

    Everything you've done
    Is killing everyone.
A little smile on a homicidal bastard.

    You wanna be the man?
    You better have a plan.
Another failure is a guaranteed disaster.

How can we ever live this down?
How can we ever live this down
you never wanted to be- they only wanted a parody
you want the world to be free?

    She only wanted the world,
    You never wanted to be.
    They only wanted a parody
You want the World to be free?
What the fuck is free about it?
What the fuck is free about it?
What the fuck is free about it?
