This poll is an attempt to find out people's feeling about the Patriot Act and its relevance if Senator Obama is elected our next president. I'd like to know everyone's opinion.

don't hold your breath waiting for Obama to repeal the Patriot Act.
  • It will take more votes to repeal than it took to enact.

Sorry about the multiple threads, this thing keeps giving me lip when I try and make it a poll.

Should the Patriot Act be repealed?

The poll options were supposed to be:

    1) NO - It is a necessary law to protect us from another terrorist attack.

    2) YES - I would trust this additional power to John McCain, but not to Barack Obama

    3) YES - It is an unconstitutional violation of our civil liberties and our right to privacy.

    4) I don't Care.

I don't really care one way or the other. I don't see much difference in my life whether the Patriot Act is there or not.

    1) for me

And no, Obama won't be able to repeal it....or pull troops from Iraq.....or lower taxs....

Just my two cents....not worth much.

If it's a poll, why is there not an option that is the converse of #2?

I think it should be adjusted, obviously. There are some things in there that were good, but it seems like they passed the act pretty quickly without really thinking about what they were doing.
No longer overwhelmed it seems so simple now.

There is no converse to #2, because the original question asks how would you feel about the Patriot Act if Barack was president.

    Gotcha, thanks.

I'm really curious to see whether all the rednecks who think this law is a great idea change their stance on it once Obama gets elected (which, I'm guessing he will). You know, seeing as how they feel that, "Obama's a tuuuurrrrruurrrrist! He PALS AROUND with other turrrrrurrrrists!!! He'll take away my gunnnn, and he'll jail me without a trial! Cuz he hates Amurrrrica!"

I'm not calling everyone who is in favor of the Patriot Act a redneck, either. I've just found that the more I talk to people, the more I find this to be true for this particular group of people.

#3, Totally unconstitutional quickly enacted to continue the atmosphere of FEAR and intimidation. If there's any dissent you could end up at Guantanamo

Even the name, "Patriot Act," was just more of Bush's bullshit.

He probably won't repeal it entirely...he voted for a more restricted version of it in 2006 that got rid of some of the more odious aspects, but kept alot of it as well. McCain voted for it to remain exactly as it was created post-9/11. I'm not sure which one of those eventually passed.

We should repeal it, but I don't think Obama will do it.

I agree. I doubt he will do anything about it. However, I'm starting to think that there may be a huge spike in the numbers of people against this law if Obama gets elected. I'm talking about the gun-toting, flag-waving, rock-the-cross-on-my-sleeve (even though I refuse to practice any of the fundamental beliefs of Christianity, such as loving thy neighbor or turning the other cheek) rednecks. Yes, these people may actually hate this law if it is in the hands of anybody other than the most supreme turrrrrrurrist fighting cowboy, George W., or some other "Maverick."

Anybody else feel that this group of people may actually be the key to overturning that law?

Imagine the statement he could make by being inaugurated and going right after the PatRIOT ACT. He would give a lot of people reason to at least consider that he may be credible for some of his "change" rhetoric. (then he should next end the war on drugs).

Politically, this would be an outstanding move (not to mention the right move).

But I agree with the predominance of this thread that if elected (and as my sig has said since McCain's nomination, I really doubt he will), he won't do it. He'll just leave well enough alone.
I cannot come up with a new sig till I get this egg off my face.

I mean, if these people really believe that Obama "pals around with terrorists," then are we giving our next president "OSAMA, UHH, I MEAN OBAMA," THE ARAB MUSLIM EXTREMIST, the power to declare martial law, suspend habeus corpus, wiretap phone conversations, etc...?
