Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record), R-Fla., resigned from Congress on Friday, effective immediately, in the wake of questions about e-mails he wrote a former male page.
"I am deeply sorry and I apologize for letting down my family and the people of Florida I have had the privilege to represent," he said in a statement issued by his office.
The two-sentence statement did not refer to the e-mails and gave no reason for Foley's decision to abruptly abandon a flourishing career in Congress.
Foley, 52, had been a shoo-in for a new term until the e-mail correspondence surfaced in recent days.
His resignation comes less than six weeks before the elections. It was not clear how Republicans would fill his spot on the November ballot.
Campaign aides had previously acknowledged that the Republican congressman e-mailed the former Capitol page five times, but had said there was nothing inappropriate about the exchange. The page was 16 at the time of the e-mail correspondence.
It was not clear what prompted Foley to abruptly decide to give up a successful career in the House.
Foley, who represents an area around Palm Beach County, e-mailed the page in August 2005. The page had worked for Rep. Rodney Alexander (news, bio, voting record), R-La., and Foley asked him how he was doing after Hurricane Katrina and what he wanted for his birthday. The congressman also asked the boy to send a photo of himself, according to excerpts of the e-mails that were originally released by ABC News.
Foley's aides initially blamed Democratic rival Tim Mahoney and Democrats with attempting to smear the congressman before the election.
The e-mails were posted Friday on Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington's Web site after ABC News reported their existence. The group asked the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct to investigate the exchange Foley had with the boy, who served as a page for Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-La.
"The House of Representatives has an obligation to protect the teenagers who come to Congress to learn about the legislative process," the group wrote, adding that the committee, "must investigate any allegation that a page has been subjected to sexual advances by members of the House."

I dont understand why congressmen are not forced to resign when they sell their votes to the highest bidding corporation. but their personal life is somehow career suicide. it does not effect the residents of Florida or the United States if this guy is into his Paige. it does effect us when the nations best interest takes a back seat to a corporation's best interest. We are blatantly lied to day in and day out about matters as important as National security, war, civil liberties, and torture, and we take it, Rumsfeld is not resigning for actions that have a huge impact on the nation. he has shamed our reputation in the world, he has by EVERYONES account miss managed this war into a situation that costs our nation dearly in any number of ways, and he can keep his job, but someones personal life that has no such impact is cause for resignation and national shame? am i glad one more seat will be LOST from republican control on November 7th? YES, but he should be voted out for his record and support of this war, not because of something that is none of my business.0

I think we only hold our elected officials to 1/2 of the accountability that they should be. I do not think it is too much to ask for elected officals to be law abiding citizens, and IF someone were to have made advances, or whatever, towards a 16 year old, that is Illegal. I do NOT want my representatives of gov't behaving that way. When you run for public office, you are subjected to public demand for decency, and this was a minor.
That said, corporate curruption is just as bad, and as important, we should be holding our reps accountable.
The congressman (if he did anything illegal), and Rumsfeld can ride to hell in the same handbasket for all I care.

Well, lets see, we have a state Rep. who is, by his very position already in the spotlight. But on top of this he has a reputation for enaging in such inappropriate behavior. And still, he decides to send messages that could very easily be traced/monitored/scrutinized by authorities. Actually, fuck the authorities, the kid in question was forwarding the messages to his friends and other people for guidance b/c he thought they were "sick".
This man should be sent to jail for sheer stupidity........0 -

In Congress, Rep. Foley (R-FL) was part of the Republican leadership and the chairman of the House caucus on missing and exploited children.
He crusaded for tough laws against those who used the Internet for sexual exploitation of children.
He may now be subject to some of the very laws he helped enact!!!!0 -

In fact, he seems to almost play along, which stands in stark contrast to his other statements to others about being freaked out by the Rep's advances and messages. That whole dialogue there was too much !!! Dude is up shit creek, fo sho.0

Not to read too much into this, but that is kind of how molestation works. Its a grooming process... and often kids don't know what to do in that situation, and play along, so it progresses. Hard to say what the kid was really feeling, but I am glad he spoke up regardless. Lord knows what else someone is capable of if they have a converstaion like this.0 -
Ouch. Turns out that certain people in the Republican leadership knew about it for about a year, yet didn't do anything.
Boehner originally said that he told Hastert about it. Hastert denied it, and Boehner called the newspaper reporter back to change his story.
Later Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Reynolds said that he also told Hastert about it... Now Hastert is saying he "doesn't recall" being told about this matter.
The Republican majority decided to vote against an investigation to see what the hell was going on with Foley not being turned in to the proper authorities 11 months ago.
I suppose the investigation could clear anyone who is being falsely accused of covering it up though... unless they really did enable him.0 -

Don't forget John Shimkus (R-IL). As the chairman of the House Page Board, he was privvy to this, too. Rodney Alexander (R-LA) told the Clerk of the House about the emails. The Clerk informed Shimkus. Shimkus talked to Foley and gave him a stern warning regarding his conduct with this page, ordering him to cease the emails. What Shimkus apparently DIDN'T do was inform any Democrat members of the Page Board, which is a bipartisan group. He also apparently didn't do any further investigation of the emails, and only now does he say that there was apparently more to it than Foley let on."Of course it hurts.
