how many people out there realize that the income tax is illegal? Do you consider people who do not pay this tax based on it's illegality to be "Un-American"?

There's nothing illegal about the income tax. There are many things immoral about the income tax.0

then why has the supreme court in numberous cases ruled that it is an illegal form of taxation?0

becos those cases were all decided before 1900 and were later over-ruled. the income tax is constitutional and the supreme court has held that to be the case on a number of occasions.0 -

I don't believe they have. I believe the Supreme Court has upheld the federal income tax via the Sixteenth Amendment (and previous to it) numerous times. The power to tax is directly provided within the original constitution.0 -
Nice try, you cheap bastard.
Looks like someone has a couple years worth of back taxes to start paying.everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do0 -

The "cheap bastards" are the ones collecting tax, not the ones who wish to evaluate its worth or legality.0 -

Fair enough. My bad.0 -
Well it "was" illegal but that's been taken care of via the 16th amendment.
The lovely idea of withholding that came about during WW2 just made it easier to cover up.
Most people have no clue what they actually earn, simply what they "take home."
There are better more out in the open ways to fund the federal government, that's for damn sure, but for politicians, the way we do it is pretty damned nice.My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.0 -

since when??? I'm pretty sure SCOTUS have NEVER ruled federal income tax illegal. If you can cite specifict case law, I'd be interested. Otherwise, all these tax deniers are just crackpots looking for a quick trip to the federal pen."If all those sweet, young things were laid end to end, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised."

income tax started in the 1930's and was suppose to be temporary. if i get a slow minute i'll look for a link. income tax is illegal but but as with everything in law; there's a loophole. i try not to pay taxes so i don't give it much thought.0 -

The income tax was not supposed to be temporary. Withholding was meant to be temporary. Milton Friedman is a traitor.0 -

this may be a dumb comment -- I really don't know -- but if tax doesn't come from your paycheck then it will come from some other area, so in the end you're going to pay our government for things like roads, health care, public works, and a military.
So what is the issue here? Our tax system is fairly progressive and equitable at the least, even though it has become more regressive during the Bush years. And income and sales (to an extent, too much sales tax obviously can slow down an economy) taxes I think are the best way to tax people, since everyone produces and consumes you are taxing everyone. When you tax people for things like property it becomes unequitable, since not everyone owns property (although you can make the argument that people who own property also can afford to pay taxes and accumulate more wealth than people who don't own property).
But really, don't beat me up, I don't have any experience in tax policy... I'm just stating what I believe to be common sense.Everything not forbidden is compulsory and eveything not compulsory is forbidden. You are free... free to do what the government says you can do.0 -

income tax does not pay for any public services. All it does is pay on the interest that is being accumulated on the national debt.0
