Yeah, well here in Australia meat is pretty much ingrained in the collective psyche. But I find that I've had to adapt a lot of recipes to vegetarian, so I've got pretty good at learning quick, yummy things to create.

We bbq a lot here too. :) But we just bbq the vegetarian stuff first so that it's not in contact with the animal products. I bbq eggplant (makes a really nice eggplant parmagiana on the bbq) and mushrooms and of course there's always vegie burgers. :)

Yeah, becoming a vegan is very hard work if you want to do it properly and not be missing vital nutrients. It takes work to make sure that all your dietary needs are being met. I have a couple of friends that are vegan and they do ok. But then I guess it takes work to make sure your dietary needs are being met regardless of whether you're a vegatarian, vegan or meat eater. Good luck with it abook. I do admire you your stance. :)

Thanks Jeanie :) No need to admire me though, it sounds like you eat as much vegetarian meals as I do. I wish I had support from people who I go out with. It makes it harder seeing them eat stuff I shouldn't and then also, I get the feeling they feel like they should eat what I'm eating out of respect or something? I wouldn't want anyone to feel that way...everyone is free to make their own choices and I'm not preachy about it ever. I'd be happier if they just ate whatever floats their boat.

I like tomato soup, ketchup and tomato (pasta) sauce, but I don't like tomatos by themselves, or on hamburgers or chicken burgers or sandwiches..

well, thats probably due to the extra crap, like added salt, they put in the tomato products. the stuff that makes you wanna eat those things. personally i think tomato sauce(ketchup) is superfluous.

I ate at a restaurant last week and I got a bunch of peas with my meal, so I started eating them and after a few fork-fulls I had to stop. I've only ever liked sweat peas straight from the pod in the garden as a kid.

That is a pretty yummy way to have peas ryan. Snow peas are really yummy fresh from the garden too.

But that doesn't sound like you don't like peas. Just that there are certain ways you like to eat them. That's more to do with texture than taste surely?

I love spinach when it's cooked in things. Love it in soup, love it in spanakopita, love it in stir fry. But don't serve it up to me boiled. There's something about the texture then that makes me want to throw up!
Same with parsnips. Bake them and I'm in. Serve them to me steamed or boiled and my stomach turns. I couldn't eat mushy peas on a pie like they do here if my life depended on it.
So perhaps it's not just about taste but also about texture? :)

Yeah, but that's more to do with familiarity isn't it? I mean my Mum has been a vegetarian for over 20 years and people still freak out sometimes when we arrive for a meal or go out for a meal. She doesn't. But they do. But that's people that don't eat with her often. Same thing, to a greater degree happens when people have food allergies. I think people just freak out or something because they're not sure what they should do or say.
I think it just has to do with what people are familiar with.
I reckon your friends will become more comfortable with it the more they are exposed to you just going about your business. :)

So no Popeye for you then cb! ;)

yeah, texture is massively important to my enjoyment of food.

I don't enjoy salad if it's limp or drenched in dressing and not crunchy and fresh.

So could you eat mushroom flavored things? like as long as there was no actual mushroom to bite into?
I'm sure you eat tomato in soup and pasta, just can't handle the texture of a fresh tomato?

Yeah, flavor I can mostly cope with, it's texture that I can't handle generally.

This I know because I can eat pate but there is no way in HELL that you'd ever get me to eat liver!!!

I suspect some oyster lovers will now be considering alternatives... :D

It's definitely taste with peas. Mushrooms I don't like the taste or the texture.
