It's definitely taste with peas. Mushrooms I don't like the taste or the texture.

So I think it's different for all of us, probably based on exposure, learned behaviour and body chemicals. What do you think?

Sounds right, but I was wondering how that fits into evolution....

There was some research that came out a couple of years ago suggesting that our taste buds are highly inclined to detect and produce the relevant body responses to make us like lipids (fats).

I would imagine that the collective favorites of our taste buds have been tuned over time to make us like calories. However the variation in what people like is probably due to genetic differences and the influence of conditioning over time.

Personally, I think it's all about the chocolate...

This reminds me of a gabbly conversation some of us had one friday night. :D

Surprisingly enough, this tends to be the case for most of us. ;)

Well like I said before humans would taste the things around them. Probably guided by smell which seems to be a big factor in taste. If it tasted ok and the taster survived then it was ok to eat. And as we have evolved we have expanded that repertoire. And as we crossed the seas and learned more about each other we expanded that again.
I think what we have today is a bit different in that there are so many things in our food now that are there simply to enhance flavor or to preserve or simply because we have a glut of something on the market and there's money to made hiding it in the food we eat.
That probably sounds dumb, but I was reading somewhere recently about corn starch or was it corn sugar and what a massive contributor it is to the stock market and how manufacturers are adding it to so much of our foods simply so they can make money. I don't think it has any nutrional merit. So it's all about the money. Let's face it there is so much unknown stuff in processed foods we'd never eat it if we really knew the process and could smell it as it was being made before we got to see the end product.

Perhaps then as our bodies ingest things and they become part of the chemical reaction of digestion our bodies then learn to look for this taste again?

edit: Geez ryan I don't know! You're really smart about these things surely you have a theory? :)

Yea, I hit Shopper's on the way to work and got a new one and brushed in the bathroom at work. The idea of shit particles being rubbed into my gums didn't sound that good.

Yea, and I keep the lid down on my toilet, just for that reason, so my toothbrush will not land in it if I drop it or something, instead it lands on the floor beside/behind the toilet which isn't any better.
