Actually the original poster was just showing those pictures to us so that we will remember what Tehran looked like before the Bush machine comes in and fucks it all up and the citizens on the streets in the pics are replaced by overworked, underpaid and dead tired US soldiers wondering which little kid is going to set off a Teletubby full of explosives.0

Those are pictures of Iran, not Iraq. And Iraq was hardly a prosperous, bustling nation prior to the US invasion. It was broke from the costs of a drawn out war with Iran. In fact, I do believe that the invasion of Kuwait resulted from Saddam's need for funding.0 -

I am well aware that those are pictures of Iran. I should go replace "it" with Tehran and change it from past tense, so that no one else gets confused.0 -

kuwait was Directiona/slantl drilling iraqs oil. imagine if canada started taking american resorces? would'nt america get pissed?
also iraq was also in such a terrible position due to the sanctions.
Not that I was for the invasion by hussein, i'm just pointing out a possible cause.0 -
City still looks like shit to me. A bunch of run down "skyscrapers" surrounded by tin shacks sitting on streets lined with some really tiny cars. I'd like to see what the rest of that mall looks like too.

UN sanctions weren't levied against Iraq until after the invasion. Kuwait was stealing oil from Rumaila field, but Iraq was also broke from the Iraq-Iran war anyway.0 -

I know, what i'm saying is that the million people who died in that 10 years of sanctions took it's toll and did the final job of breaking iraqs back.
The iran/iraq war obvioulsy was a major factor.

I guess we are not really have anything to disagree with here, just kinda adding some info.0 -

Well...by "subway" I meant the sandwich shop. Do they have sandwich artists in Tehran too? In KC we drive cars. You know...SUV's, Nissans, Big Trucks, Cadillacs, etc. We've yet to revert back to our camels.MOSSAD NATO Alphabet Stations (E10)

I live in Romania right now where the average person makes somewhere around $150 a month and we have the same high class malls here. Go to a Polo or a Lacoste store as shown his/her picture and the prices will be double what I would have to pay in the states. People go to the malls to window shop, you hardly ever see people walking around with bags of clothes. Having these western stores in no way reflects the 'quality of life' or their purchasing power.
Anyhow- it's the government, not their people that are the problem. Simply trying to point out that there is no way those pictures are representative of the life a majority of the Iranians live.
Yeah but I doubt Iran or Romania are as expensive as let's say NYC or London when it comes to groceries or just food, who the fuck needs Polo or Lacoste?THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

Funny as I read this thread I have never realized that the amount of purchasing power one haves would determine happiness....
I bet there are pygmies that an inherently more happy that most of civilized culture.....pictures here and there of high class malls do nothing for me to gauge one's happiness in a foreign land that i have never experienced before.0 -

I think it does. Yeah it diminishes after a certain point, but having a nice house and a full stomach with extra money left over for self-improvement or a short vacation effects happiness.Rockin'InCanada wrote:I bet there are pygmies that an inherently more happy that most of civilized culture.....pictures here and there of high class malls do nothing for me to gauge one's happiness in a foreign land that i have never experienced before.
True, but the pygmies live in a self-contained/sufficient environment away from commercialism/modernity. When people see others with with basic luxuries they dont have is when it effects happiness in my mind. The less you know, the more you believe.0 -

Yeah but when you don't understand what a luxury is how could it affect your happiness?
Plus your definition of happiness is based on your experience on what happiness is...."American Dream"...which certainly cannot be applied to the world as it then implies your way of living is inherently better than anyone else's and I certainly do not believe that.....its in the eye of the beholder I guess.....0
