Comparing an orchestra playing music from guys that are long dead, is one thing. It is completely different for a band to form a cover band of a band that is still very much alive and playing and writing new music.
  • I was thinking about this thread yesterday when I was at the Showbox- now- I never go to the Showbox- Market, it seems except to see FTM- or last night Zeke & Green River.

However- since H had expressed that he liked the Supersuckers-( the time at Vancouver when they opened for PJ anyway), we tried to stay for their set.
But not really what I like- even if the songs were original.
I wished we were there to see FTM- even if they play some of the same songs more than once

I would agree that if you had a chance to hear the original band- a tribute band- would be a poor second.
However- some acts do well- http://bostonist.com/2008/04/28/song_sung_blue.php
    ( Eddie didn't know the words- what a surprise ;) )

OK, using the example of an orchestra playing Shostakovich was a stretch.
However, while I can't think of another tribute band I have seen besides Dirty Frank- they were great when I saw them after Eddies solo show in Santa Barbara earlier this year-and I didn't expect them to be Pearl Jam, I just wanted to hear their music.
    :)

Have you ever heard Richard Barone or Kurt Cobain sing Bowies Man who sold the world? & even though Bob Dylan is obviously a fantastic writer- listening to his lyrics by someone with a different style of delivery, like Jimmy LaFave, gives a whole new meaning to them.
You must be the change you want to see in the world

Personally, I would feel gross and dirty if I had a PJ cover/tribute band play at my birthday party.
  • I hope not.
I think you would have a great time with us.

...coming up your way soon BTW, more info to come...see you there.

agreed. no code is the real deal. they rocked.
I love to turn you on
  • i disagree im in a pearl jam tribute (backseat lover) and a lot of what everyone is saying is that people who cant make their own music go with tributing to other bands. completely false it just so happens we enjoy what we are doing and we enjoy seeing people have a great night in town and if we can add to the effect than great! all in all we dont do this cause we cant make our own music we do this cause we enjoy pearl jams music and playing it

Did it occur to anyone that these guys in "tribute" bands just LIKE playing music? Perhaps they have other jobs, or day jobs and want to do this for fun? I went to Huntington on Saturday night and had fun listening to some Pearl Jam...the guys looked like they were having fun on stage, the crowd seemed happy...what more do you want? We can't see PJ every day, month or year, so why not enjoy what we DO have?
Need a tour Travel Agent??? Pick me :-)

If you can sing or play an instrument, why the hell don't you be original and make your own music? It is kinda lame, but who am I to tell someone what to play.

is it because cover bands pay MONEY and um writing and performing your own music might not pay the bills?

i will never tell pete t that he cant sell his songs to anyone to make money
