Cat Stevens Refuses to Speak to Unveiled Women

LONDON -- The musician formerly known as Cat Stevens has denied reports that he refuses to talk to women who are not wearing veils.
Stevens has gone by the name Yusuf Islam since he converted to Islam in the 1970s. His manager, Marc Marot, has denied reports that Islam refused to speak with women without veils at the Echo Awards in Germany last week.
Marot said that the allegations are "baseless and stupid" and Islam has no issues with speaking with women who are not veiled.
Marot said that some of the most important people to Islam's career are women.

I guess it was fairly obvious that the reports were fake, funny how people like rationalthought so easily are willing to believe things like this then go around posting it.0 -
This story seems a bit stretched and embelished.
I have several of Cat Steven's 70s albums and CDs. I don't care what he's into now, but I love his 70s music and listen to it often.
Although, it is interesting to note that on that live version of Peace Train, with the african singers; Cat Stevens drops the word 'girl' from the end of the phrases which on the original recording had the the word "girl":D:D
Could that be an indication of some kind of islam-rooted discrimination towards the female gender? Or maybe the 'girl" he was originally refering to in that song, does not wear a viel, so he had to drop it from the song?:D
Stay tuned for further developments in this all so intriquing and mysterious situation.0 -

but Muslim women in western countries can wear their burka's proud?
by the same token, shouldn't we expect them in the western world NOT to wear their scarves?
personally i think it strips them of their identity as people and as women.
Don't those countries have actual laws and rules re: head scarves and what not? Can you imagine the fuss here in Oz if Johnny Howard tried to pass a law saying they weren't allowed to wear it? Remember all the fuss that was made when a few of the schools (in Sydney maybe??) tried to ban it? I myself agree with you, and am big on people integrating themselves into their new communties (and before people get their hackles raised, I don't mean that their culture should be abandoned entirely). I think for me, the biggest issue re: dress code in Australia is not that they wear their traditional clothes, but they then make the judgement that because western women choose to dress however they please (and appropriately for hot weather we have here!) that we are inviting men to rape us. And again, it isn't every muslim, but in one instance it was a rather pwerful one. Well, he used to be anyway! Not anymore thankfully.1998 Brisbane night 2

Yeah, you know, after I watched the '06 version a 2nd time, I gotta say it ain't bad. I was just so used to the more upbeat version.0 -

Why is it fairly obvious? Wacky religionists all over the world practice their religions in silly ways. Matisyahu here in the States belongs to some strange Hasidic Jewish sect and he will not touch a woman. So no female fans can hug him or shake his hand or anything. Plenty of pentacostal or fundie christian sects won't let their kids go to dances. Strange Islamic practices require females to be covered head to toe. They are all perfectly free to be wacky, and I am happy to point and laugh."I'll use the magic word - let's just shut the fuck up, please." EV, 04/13/080 -

I thought i'd bring this post back since this was announced this morning. I think some people on this board owe an apology as well.

Cat Stevens accepts libel damages
Musician Cat Stevens - now known as Yusuf Islam - has won libel damages over articles suggesting he refused to talk to women not wearing a veil.
The stories also claimed that the singer - a Muslim convert - would only speak to women other than his wife through a third party.
His lawyer told The High Court in London that "Mr Islam has never had difficulties working with women".
The World Entertainment News Network agency has already apologised.
'False impression'
Its article, entitled "Yusuf Islam ignores bare-headed women", was distributed to its subscribers including Contactmusic.com, read by more than two million people per month, which also published an apology on its website.
Mr Islam's laywer, Adam Tudor, told the court the allegations had caused the singer "considerable embarrassment and distress".
He said that the defendants now accepted that the claims were "entirely false" and had "created an utterly false impression of attitude to women"
"In his normal life, women feature among some of the most influential people in Mr Islam's team."
Mr Tudor added that the story "cast serious aspersions, quite wrongly, on his religious faith, which is of the utmost importance to him".
WENN and Contactmusic.com also agreed to pay the singer's legal costs, while the damages have been donated to his charity Small Kindness.
The musician, who converted to Islam in 1977, was not in court.
In 2005, Mr Islam won substantial libel damages from The Sun and Sunday Times after they falsely claimed he supported terrorism.0 -
I don't speak to women unless they're unveiled.....or should I say, topless.0
