Repeal the Patriot Act if Barack Obama becomes our next president?

Anybody else feel that this group of people may actually be the key to overturning that law?

I guess it depends on how deep the fear of Obama being a terrorist and lukewarm on America are. If it's just a bunch of lame rhetoric being used to try to frighten people into voting for McCain, then even if Obama wins, they'll go back to thinking that the Patriot Act is key to protecting us from terror. But if the things I am hearing really are legit fear that Obama's gonna get into office and work to destroy America, then yeah, they may say "I don't want that Muslim terrorist invading my privacy." (though they trusted Bush to do it).

My gut says "no." I don't see the PA believers doing a 180 because of Obama.

It's all moot, as McCain's gonna win.

He won't and he'll tell the mass of supporters that he can't because it would risk his chances in the 2012 election - at least in so many words.

Man would THAT be a lame excuse. That's another reason to go after it right away. Even if it pisses people off, you have four years to win them back.

Actually, I'd be really curious about his excuse.

#3 for me no matter who becomes pres.

And Obama will not repeal the act. He voted for its extension. He's part of the problem.

I said he's gonna win. I did not say legally ;)

I have almost wavered of late, but I think we're going to learn about race and the Dems on Nov 4. We'll see.

  • I agree. I doubt he will do anything about it. However, I'm starting to think that there may be a huge spike in the numbers of people against this law if Obama gets elected. I'm talking about the gun-toting, flag-waving, rock-the-cross-on-my-sleeve (even though I refuse to practice any of the fundamental beliefs of Christianity, such as loving thy neighbor or turning the other cheek) rednecks. Yes, these people may actually hate this law if it is in the hands of anybody other than the most supreme turrrrrrurrist fighting cowboy, George W., or some other "Maverick."

That's an interesting look at it. Although I'm afraid the type of people you speak of would not be that informed to be worried about it. Unless Rush or Hannity tells them to be.

It definitely needs to be amended though.

Exactly-- without a doubt, a few of these blowhards will start singing a different tune under an Obama presidency, and all of their listeners will follow. Nobody pays attention to when laws are passed, and who voted for them anyway-- it's just whoever screams the loudest, and smears their opponents the hardest.

A question to those who think we need the Patriot Act... Why can't we just get warrants to search people that we are truly suspicious of? Even if it was inconceivable to us that we could suffer such an awful attack on September 11th, we learned one thing afterwards-- that it WAS possible. We knew who did it. They admitted to doing it almost immediately after, right? Why didn't we just be slightly more liberal about dealing out warrants to watch people who may have had some connections to Al Queda? If you were best friends with Osama Bin Laden's second cousin, it might be a bit of a stretch to investigate you--but maybe not totally unreasonable? Of course there is always some degree of gray area.

So, even in 2001, we were talking about a few thousand people that really wanted to destroy us, at most (however, continual poor decisions in our foreign policy may have caused that number to grow)... Why create blanket legislation that allows our government to spy on MILLIONS? If you have to worry about MILLIONS of citizens taking you down, it's time to re-evaluate how you look at the world, and how you operate.

What real advantage has the Patriot Act given us over fighting terrorists? I would say none. With a legal search warrant, law enforcement can do just about everything that the Patriot Act allows them to do without needing a warrant. Being able to search more people at a time still costs time, money, and is aggravating for all parties involved. It is essentially fruitless well over 99% of the time, and again, costs all of us money.

The founders wanted to protect us from unreasonable search and seizure, and they made it their FOURTH BIGGEST PRIORITY. #4 in the Bill of Rights! This isn't the 27th amendment here, this is a fundamental right that belongs to us as citizens of this country.

So what does it do that is actually advantageous? Allow some judges to sleep late a few days of the week?

Maybe I'm missing the boat here, so please tell me.
